I use the Pur Guide and it works very well for me. There are other ones that are lighter and better.

the hiker is a filter and will remove bacteria but not virii. for virus removal you need a purifier or use chemicals...

MSR Miniworks but it may be a little heavier than some of the PURs. I like it because you can field strip and clean it very quickly.

If the water is cloudy, the PUR Hiker works for me. If the water is clear, I use Aqua Mira (2% clorine dioxide) to purify the water. The Aqua Mira is lighter.

I have a PUR hiker and have had no trouble. I notice the same experience reported by others.

As long as viruses are not a problem in the US, the filter seems to be all you need.

There are some two-stage water purifying kits that are very light weight. A friend of mine buys his kit somewhere over the internet. I can ask him by email if anyone is interested.

yes, I heard of some kids that don't have the bad taste that some have, but I forgot the name. If someone knows that would be great.

Water Filter
I believe that as long as you filter water with most products you will be OK. I've had good luck drinking spring water unfiltered. My preference is SWEETWATER since it has a levered action. I've been using this one for about 10 years.

I have the PUR hiker and the MSR Waterworks. The PUR hiker is the best filter in my opinion except for one little problem. Sand. That's why I bought the MSR. I use the PUR when I'm backpacking in the mountains but when I backpack in canyon or desert country I carry the MSR. It handles sandy, silty water much better than the PUR. Sand can quickly clog the paper filter of the Hiker, the MSR on the otherhand can be quickly brushed off and it's as good as new.

Technically we would need a decision matrix to determine what was 'best' with weighted factors such as, risk, where used, technique, impact to the environment, cost, value, ease of use, availability, weight, durability etc. then take an unbiased vote to REALLY evaluate this. But I would probably say since everyone here seems to be alive and well and each one of us uses a different technique, they're probably all OK. Use whichever one you fancy.

Iodine / Neutralizer
I use iodine tabs because they are the lightest form of purification and despite popular mith, can be virtually tasteless after adding the neutralizer tab.

I used to believe a pump filter was the best until mine broke on a 9 day hike. I was forced to use my "emergency" iodine / neutralizer. I couldn't believe what I had been missing. All that pumping and crouching over while getting eatten alive by mosquitoes was now avoided by simply scouping up the water I wanted and adding the tablets. It really is the most convienient way to purify water. CHEAPEST TOO :)
