Define a Hippie??
I had this argument with some girl that believed she was a hippie because of how she dressed.(rich yuppy to me, that could but fake cloths)

But there is no definition for hippie(there may be) But how can you put a defintion on someones life style. How they dress, music, social activities.

You want to see some true HIPPIES check this link out.

Too bad that most turned there back on the revolution. Great ideas, but it never stood a chance, too many people not wanting to rise up to the cause, they were too busy gettin' laid and trippin'. Only a few would answer the cause, man, and paid the price. We now live with the fallout of this generations partying. Take a look 'round at the video game, slacker, generation. You feel comfortable knowing that these kids are going to be the ones pushing the buttons while we're in the home? Of course there ARE good ones, like there's always been, but that number has falling to the point were they will not be able to carrying the rest.

The Future is here right now, if your willing to pay the price.

Hope everyone had fun!

Define Hayseed
Someone once called me a hayseed but I don't think it's the same thing as a hippie.

Arky, don't worry. You don't have enough hair on your head to catch any hayseeds, thanks to your non-hippie hair style.

I miss the music that was made back then. The crap (sorry twignut) thats made today don't hold a candle to the great stuff back in the 60's & 70's.

Common hippies slogans I remember:

"Give peace a chance"
"Make love, not war"
"Don't trust anyone over 30"
"What if they gave a war and nobody came?"
"Better red than dead"
"Pigs"

Really useful stuff.

Keep in mind that the universities were filled with hippies from the mid 60's to 1972 to avoid the draft. I think they all ended up living in Berkeley.

good story treebeard. I think i would have wet myself if guys like Scofield, Cobham, and Alphonso Johnson came over my house. When I was traveling around the country some time ago I ran into a lot of what I would guess you called hippies(2nd or 3rd generation). They were a lot of fun to ski/snowboard and party with. Very care free people. I remember one guy in particular we called "the vagrant" b/c he mooched off of everyone. My friends next door were nice enough to let him stay at their place while he was looking for a place of his own. He wound up stealing their rent $ and vehemently denying it when confronted with evidence. Unfortunately, he wound up getting a beating he deserved. Never saw him after that.

Keep in mind that the National Guard was filled with rednecks, hippies, city cats, and country bumpkins all trying to avoid the draft.

We would see the Natl Guard boys at University of Maryland, College Park when we had anti-war demonstrations(shut down the campus!).

Those Natl Guard(29th Inf Div) boys were just the other side of the same coin.
American kids not wanting to go to Vietnam.

THen there were those of us with HIGH draft lottery numbers(344) who were lucky enough to not have to care.

Still a dodger.......just a passive one.

Tom T, first heard Gong on WDET...Detroit's public radio station. I used to lay awake all night listening to the cool music. I also had a passion for king Crimson. I still love King Crimson. I wish I still had my albums. Gave them all to someone who'd appreciate them when my needle went on my record player, new one cost $85 and I didn't have it. Thought it was time to upgrade to cd's but never have replaced much of the stuff I let go. =(

Re: define hippie. Well, I would say people hanging out in the streets with a backpack and nowhere to go on Thanksgiving would define hippy.

Thanx, Wolfman Bro! That was pretty special meeting George Duke, considering what a Zappa freak I am to this day. Got to meet some pretty cool people being in radio from 1977- 1990 (including Johnny and Joey Ramone, 'Outlaws' guitarist Billy Jones, 'Kansas' Violinist Robbie Steinhardt, Dickey Betts among them). But, the whole hippie lifestyle was fun, even though the term was already pretty dated and seldom used by the early to mid seventies (when I grew long hair). I guess the stereotypes carry more longevity. Actually, in the sixties, I was a pretty clean cut kid, although I attended many Vietnam protests (moratoriums, I beleive was a term used for them at the time). Was at the one on Wall Street in 1969 when the hard hats charged the rally and clashed with the hippies. Was just a teenage kid with non-violent ideals at the time. Not necessarily a "hippie". Was always into the music of the times, but too young at that time (and under too many parental pressures) to live the lifestyle beyond thatin the sixties and beginning of the seventies. BTW, Sass, I just downloaded 'Epitaph' and '21st Century Shizoid Man' By King Crimson off the Kazaa website last night. Funny you mentioned them today.

I only knew one true hippy couple in my life..growing up in the 70's. Yes, they had the ratty orange VW bus. license plate reading STOP NUCLEAR ENERGY proliferation. Not married, open marriage (he wasn't around most of the time) he was black, she was white. Their kids had funny afro hair and yes, they rarely bathed. I like that they raised their kids without the shallow ideals of consumer America. Their daughter is now 24ish and is a lawyer fighting for the rights of underprivledged kids. A lot can be said for the hippie era.

treebeard - even funnier that you mentioned Wall St! I turn around, look out my window, and I'm looking down onto the stock exchange! Believe it or not, it looks beautiful today. They have a MASSIVE tree in the middle of the street all lit up with a huge star and the US flag made out of lights going up the columns of the stock exchange.

TB - there's a thing 'round here (Detroit) about how the local DJ's are getting pushed out for the larger "syndies". What do you think about that?
laqtis
12:19:29 PM
12/03/02

Radio has taken a beating in my eyes. I come from the old world of radio personality that had some choice in programming and could develop a true personality. As far as syndication goes, it is impossible to keep up with the Howard Sterns and the other major players like him, but the bottom line has become the almighty dollar. It's all being run strict corporate and the local guys don't stand a chance. Tom Petty says it like it is in his new song, 'The Last DJ.' It's so true.

There goes the last DJ
Who plays what he wants to play
Says what he wants to say
Hey Hey Hey, etc. etc.

I always looked at radio as a local entity. It is a real shame that it isn't anymore. In New York, we are really feeling it here. We used to have the best radio going. Now you can hear this same stuff anywhere. As a matter of fact, I envy the little bit of flexability some of these smaller market stations have. They can still stick to their artistic guns a little. I heard one station WKLU in either Indianapolis or Bloomington (not sure which) as I was passing thru this summer. Great stuff! Wish I had that here still.
