Still some communes around Taos, I hear. Soon they will have Prowler up there too. ;-)

I visited the Lama Foundation in the mid seventies. I was impressed, and wished, at the time, to replicate what they had done there. I remember most clearly the meditation room with a huge octagonal window looking out over the valley toward Taos. Beautiful, I tell you.

Sugarloaf, NY... it used to be a hippie commune in the 60's.. the hippies are still there, and they own most of the antique/trinket shops in town. It's a pretty funky place, and you can get some killer deals on some unique items.

Dunk, I disagree with you about Sonoma County. It's a pretty big bastion of uptight conservatives who commute to SF. However, there are a good number of hippies there, also.
I live in the town formerly referred to as "the Berkeley of the Midwest".

Toas is the hippiest town I have ever seen!!!!

Quasta, NM is getting loaded, and a little town on the border of Col, NM north of Toas then Quasta.

Northern CA
Dunk's right about Sonoma county, I have some customers there who run a free clinic for the underprivliged, the women are in their 50's, don't shave their legs, etc. Also have some out on the Russian River, that area is indeed hippie haven, like Mendocino, etc.

Further east in the foothills, there's an Ananda village near Novato which is very weird, even by Northern CA standards, and that's saying something.

Because, Lyra, you are young and have been protected for far too long. It's time to spread your wings a little. There's a big world out there.
Big Wave, try somewhere closer to the exact center of the US and you'll get it.

Taos, or Toas if you spell like Prowler, is just another tourist trap with a lot of wannabees in it. They dress the part on weekends and go to their yuppie jobs during the week.

Moab
Apparently you don't mountain Bike. Moab is THE Mountain Biking Mecca....of the world. Folks come from all over the world to ride The Slickrock Trail, Porcupine Rim, and one of the hundreds of other world class trails around Moab.

The 24 hours of Moab is one of the touoghest, ost grueling endurance mountain bike races around.

And considering it's in Utah, it is suprizingly Hippie central also.

2mph- 2 hand, Masterbating, Hermafridite!
2mph, if you EVER been there then you would know that in town YES , torist yups, but take a trip to the masa, or even back behind Three Peaks and you'll see that there are MANY of poverty stuck hippies., Which I call those types "Dirty Hippies". You will find most of these Hippies tending to small farms, working in coffee shops, livin where ever. Not associating with the yupps unless they have to "work". Check out my link I dont think there where many wanna be hipps there at all!!

The Luna Mesa cafe right outside of Fruita, Utah is the hippiest place I think I've been to. (Maybe it was just a really good day with fine altitude.)
