Thursday: Got to Mammoth 4am, slept until 9am. Got a late start on the slopes. Rode the Gondola with Trailbunny and PolarBear. They decided to ski down the back side (which unfortunately was closed) and hiked out to the front side. Ran into Powderhound and Kelly, took up their offer for Thanksgiving dinner. Rode with Brian for an hour, then he left for his Thanksgiving dinner. After showers we went to Powderhound’s for a great Thanksgiving dinner!! It was also a celebration of 2 birthdays (one was Powderhound’s). Later, we drove to the Pit for the night.

Friday: SnowDude and I dayhiked Sherwin Creek Trailhead (7800’) to Valentine Lake (9700’). The trail was icy in spots for 2 miles. The trail leveled off at 8500’, passed by Sherwin Lake at 2.5 mi, then ascended through snow. Another hiker’s tracks ended at 9300’, around 4.5 miles. We followed the blazes and made our way past a pond, and up a steep, deep snow covered hill to Valentine Lake (9700’), 6 miles from the trailhead. We sat on a log and had a quick lunch. It was getting cold, and SnowDude said “I have a wild and crazy idea - let’s go to Tahoe (NV) and get married tonight!”. I looked at him and said “You’re kidding, aren’t you!?!” He was serious. What a perfect, romantic way to propose – the Snow Couple on the banks of snow-covered Valentine Lake!! This was totally a surprise, since we both don’t care for weddings. But, since we’ve been together for almost 5 years, he thought it was the thing to do. But I needed a little time to soak it in. At least Valentine’s Day of next year. Its not too far off, but its not ‘tonight’. We hiked out 6 miles in 2 hrs 25 minutes, with the last 2 miles using flashlights and walking on ice. We took showers at the Mammoth Mountain Inn, then went to Powderhound’s place to watch a slide show of the pics they took during the day. After, we went back to the Pit for the night.

Saturday: Woke up and it was snowing! The top was closed, but the snow was coming down, which made the riding good! Ran into Curt, who we hadn’t seen since March. He rode with us most of the day. Ride of the day was our laps on Avy 3. When the lifts closed, we took showers, then met everyone at Shogun’s for sushi. We had another drink at Mammoth Grill & Bar, then headed for the Pit.

Sunday: Started snowboarding at 9:10am and didn’t stop til 4:10pm. We found some good powder off the top and kept riding those runs (Shifty laps!). The legs were burning, but I was making turns without stopping! We separated from the group when they stopped for lunch. Sheebz and Dave-O stopped by the truck at the end of the day to say goodbye.

A proposal, great friends, mountains, turkey, sushi, snowboarding, and some hiking. It doesn’t get any better than this!!”
