i only use the tarp now when i think it will rain. if you look at the sleeping setup you'll see that the foot of the sleeping bag tucks into a pocket in the silnylon ground cloth. when i rig for rain i set my feet very near the edge so my head is further in the tarp. that generally provides enough coverage that even driving rain doesn't get me wet. one also has to pitch the tarp for the weather and make use of avaliable cover (trees, logs, bushes, etc) to lessen the effects of wind. it does take practice but it works well. if i am really concerned about rain or cold weather i bring a bivy bag (oware epic bivy weight=9 oz).

WK, have you looked at the Brawny Shelters? She quit making them and now antigravitygear is making them with her input. Here is the link

WK, which one were you looking at?

I saw weights from 11 to 20 ounces each

The first one. I figured it out now. That is my tent without the floor.

11 ounces! Sweet!

i have found the tarps where the bottom stakes to the ground to be a bit misleading in terms of capacity (floor space) because you can't really use the space right near the edges, especially if you pitch the tarp low to the ground. they are also tough to get a taught pitch with which is key in windy weather. i am hooked on the catenary ridgeline tarps for this reason.

i will say that one advantage of this design is that it sheds wind nicely -if- you pitch it well with respect to the wind (otherwise it's a big wind scoop).

these tarp designs are basically 1/2 of a pyramid tent design that is gaining popularity these days. they are a great shelter for multiple people (sleeping around the pole in the center) or a smaller one is great for one person + their gear but really in order for it to fit the tarp has more space than one person needs for a basic shelter. so i have stayed away... but for an ultralight multi-person shelter i can see the pyramid design as being hard to beat.
