Don't judge a whole genre, by a few bad examples. It is obvious to me(a hunter), that these few were atypical. Most ethical hunters would refer to these types by their proper name of "Slob Hunters".

I've heard some pretty bad stories as well, but don't judge all by the actions of a few. I've seen videos of hunts I coulda done without, in particular one of the moose hunt and another of a bunny killing.
(I boiled that bunny later, but that's another story)

You can't tar all hunters with the same brush. There are some fine folks that hunt. Personally I don't think we non-hunters can claim any moral superiority because we have other people in assembly lines do the killing for us (and there are seem to be all manner of people in that business, too).

I don't want people to judge me by the most obnoxious backpackers (or the most obnoxious TT'ers).

As a life long hunter I take particular exception to Violin, the troll, in that characterization. If you're capable of fighting back, which I doubt, I would be more than happy to prove you wrong.

I know a couple of guys who have been gored or trampled by deer who would disagree.

But thanks for stirring the pot anyway.

Typical hunter's mentality:

How about the revenue needed to repair automobiles and humans damaged in ever spiraling deer/car collisions caused by the need to increase herd size to bring in those hunting revenues?

Caused by the need to INCREASE herd size? You obvioulsy don't know #&%!$ about herd size and why it has increased so.

I recently went hunting for elk. Killed my elk on the first shot, in the neck. No wasted meat, no flinging body parts, just a damn good shot, again.

I hunt for a number of reasons, probably the biggest is to get outdoors. I also hunt for the meat which is why I go for cows only. I cut and package it all myself. Probably have close to 125 lbs in the freezer right now. That will keep me from having to go to the grocery store for quite awhile. And, since it is much leaner than beef or pork, it's much better for you.

Violin, I realize that you're just up to a little pot stirring (go w/ the whisk as suggested), but do you eat meat? Do you wear any type of animal product, like leather? You do realize, don't you, that someone has to kill the animal to harvest these products for you?! Have you ever been to an animal processing plant? It's not really all that lovely or humane, in comparison to a quick, accurate bullet.

The need to increase herd size? Don't they set limits on how many animals you can kill, and sometimes just limit the # of permits given?

Cripes, at some parks here in metro detroit, they've asked hunters to come IN and thin out the herd. Maybe that just goes back to development, and pushing the herd into a more concentrated area.

Admit it. Hunters hunt for the thrill of the kill. It is way too expensive, time consuming and unreliable to produce meat that way.

re: hunting
I can appreciate and respect the opinions of "VEGANS" who think hunting is wrong... even though I disagree with them being an ex-hunter myself. But for those meat eaters who bad mouth DECENT hunters and think hunting is murder are nothing more than pathetic hypocrites whom I never will appreciate nor respect any of their opinions... ever.

Hunting is a process, by in nature, that will keep balance regardless if hunting is done by human or by animal. Like it or not, thats just the way it is. Stop hunting completely and see what happens. Ever hear of population explosion? Just look at what the human race is doing.

Thanks Chief! I was also going to make the point about not having to go to the grocery. Chief is right Violin, one elk can keep a whole family going for an entire winter. A deer or two can do the same. Have you ever butchered a animal Violin? It's pretty hard work, and if you do it right, you'll have hardly any waste. Have you ever seen the waste on the floor of an animal processing plant? There's alot, I mean alot-alot.

As far as increasing the herd size, who doesn’t know #&%!$?

Just look at the disproportionate number of licenses issued to kill male deer and you’ll see one reason why there is a major increase in herd size. Killing male deer increases the herd by causing the females' internal reproductive mechanisms to go haywire, resulting in the births of twins and triplets. Any wildlife biologist not associated with the hunting community will verify that this is fact.

Thanks Violin for speaking for those who have no voice! You may not want me on you side, but I am. I don't eat any meat or wear anything made from animals. Look around, everything we need can be made from non-animal parts. Right now I'm wearing cotton and wool (the sheep are still alive, I know this cuz I shaved them myself) and this morning I had oatmeal with honey (the bees are still alive, I collected the honey myself also) and drank milk from my cows.

Weren't the mountain sides all pasture lands before becoming State or National parks. The AT goes through apple orchards that may be a beautiful walk, but it sure isn't an old growth forest. How is growing crops or grazing cattle in fields that used to be forests or swamps OK, but taking a deer without harming the environment around it is bad?

In my neck of the woods, the only woods that are safe from developement are the ones set aside for mixed use activities - which in almost all cases, is primarily hunting.

Were it not for the hunters and fishermen(women) there would be far less public land for you to hike on.

Hunting increases herd size? Pretzel logic.

Hunters provide funds to help keep forests open for hiking.

Yeah, OK

They also provide the stray bullets to keep the hikers on their toes........or more properly on their bellies.

This is a serious questions, because I don't know the figure, but how many people are killed by hunters every year? How many people fall to their death around water falls? How many people die from overexposure to the elements?

I ask this because I want to know what is the greatest risk to me in the backcountry, hunters or just the backcountry itself? Should hunters be restricted from parklands? Should waterfalls be fenced off? Should Parklands be offlimits in the winter months?

Exactly what is the greatest risk to a person in the backcountry?
