When I was a teen, we used to jump off the top of the Emerald Isle bridge in North Carolina. It was a little over 60' high. Now, most of the time our jumps weren't from the top. We usually jumped from a height of about 40'into an area that was out of the main channel. The challenge here wasn't the height, but the shallowness of the water - only 6-8 feet - so you really had to be on your game to keep from smashing into the bottom.

Occassionally -usually preceeded by mind altering activities - we would jump from the top (60+ ft.) into the deeper water, but only after the memory of the last jarring landing had been sufficiently fogged over.

Helo Casting...emphasis on the Casting
Having jumped from moving helicopters into rivers, lakes, oceans, even Ft Bennings Victory Pond, I can tell you that hitting water from that height is like landing on hard ground at times. Add the effect of water forced at speed up an unprepared nose or open mouth, and the shock can be exceptionally strong. Imagine the unskilled diver hitting the pool off a three meter board and you get the idea.....it hurts....the article said it best, "Unfortunately the best deterent to jumping from the bridge has already occured..."

Death.

In collage we used to jump off a 70' railroad bridge into a river. Everytime I jumped from the top I got a nose bleed. I could jump from the railroad deck though and have no problems.

Would I now, or did I do it in high school?

The water was plenty deep. Seemed like you'd go down forever.

At least Australia's crocodiles or sharks didn't get him.

And no, I wouldn't have jumped.

No!...........................Definitly Not!
Jumped off of strip mine cliffs almost that high and into water below. But I wouldn't want to do that into a body of water where I'd have to swim for what seemed like forever to get to dry land. You gotta wear tennis shoes when jumping heights like that and especially make every effort to NOT have your knees hit you in the face.

Wisdom
At that age we sometimes think of ourselves as invincible and that the only outcome of the conservative approach is the loss of an opportunity to experience more of life's rich pageant. It takes the wisdom of elders or experience to realize that somtimes the conservative approach is the right approach.

When I was young I didn't listen to anyone. My position was that either, they never had any fun when they were young - never took a risk - so they had no right to tell me about things they had no experience with. Or that they had too much fun as a kid - got into plenty of trouble as a youth and now are warning people about the dangers - and now they are trying to deprive me of the same fun they got to experience.

Youth is when anything is possible and death is what happens to the other guy.

I'm using two different computers. Our old desktop has the caps and the laptop - for some reason - doesn't have me in caps. It's all the same login so I'm not quite sure why this is. I'll try to figure it out this weekend. I prefer the caps (I don't know why.)

They'd have to throw me out....
No doubt they could & would throw me out, but I'd take a piece of the plane with me. I'm afraid to fly & occasionally I have to go up in a chopper for my job. I have a drink before I take off on commercial flights.
