“The most amazing night sky I have ever wittnessed (on land anyway) was in southern Utah near Grand Gulch. It's a little north west of the four corners area.

I just layed back in my camp chair and stared into the milky way for hours. NO light pollution anywhere, no moon that night either. The closes lights were 35 miles to the south in Mexican Hat (pop. <1000).”

(so you were already in one of the best places, but you Left, and went to Cloud Hell, up in the Pac-NW. Why would you Doooo sucha thing?)


HIGH up on mountains's good also (above the Damn Clouds), but there's the Temperature Thing, the Oxygen Thing, the Ambient Pressure Thing, etc.... deserts are much less problematic.

“Best place I ever saw stars was in the desert- Two months of sleeping under them in Egypt- Amazing.”

“Best place I have seen them was at a Scout camp on a cold, clear winter night off of the Richardson Highway in AK. No cities near by, no humidity, no moon. I have never seen the Milky Way like that night.”

“I used to live in a vacation subdivision in the Blue Ridge and would take my sleeping bag up by the lake on clear nights. Then the creep who owned the cabin across the lake put in a street light and screwed it all up for everybody.”

“LOL, my friend, with whom I was living at the time, was a retired Marine. He walked up to Goober's place one day and was staring at the street light.

"Like my new street light?" Goober asked.

"Damn," Tom said, "No wonder I couldn't hit that son of a #&%!$. It was on the OTHER side of the pole. I thought I was losing my touch!"

"I was trying to shoot the damn thing out, and I couldn't understand why I kept missing. I know I'm a better shot than that."

Goober didn't know whether to believe him or not, and I was doubled over laughing.”

“Seeing the night sky with no light pollution is one of the best things about getting out into the woods, away from "civilization."

Best I ever saw was from the beach at the edge of the Indian Ocean. Took my breath away.

“Eagles Nest Lake, MN, with my grandfather when I was a kid. On clear nights, we used to canoe out to the middle of the lake (wearing lots of bug spray) and he would tell me about the stars.”

“Midway between Portsmouth, Va. and the Straight of Gibralter in the middle of the Atlantic. Smoking a joint while sitting on a 2'wide by 30'long catwalk hanging off the sheer, windowless side of the aft end of an aircraft carrier with your feet dangling 15' above the water. The stars so plentiful and the sky so purplish/black that you felt immersed in the heavens. It felt as if you could reach out and pluck the glittering jewels from the velvet cloak they rested on. The only sound the lapping of the water against the hull and the beating of your heart in your chest. If you listened carefully you could just hear the stars sizzling out as they dipped to close to the black sea.”
