Oh C'Mon......Y'All Got A Dirty Mind
My brother after all these years still swallows his toothpaste after scrubbing his teeth, whereas I always spit it out when I'm done scrubbing. Even when camping I still spit it our regardless of backcountry ethics (I prolly shouldn't be saying that), however, I do try to cover it up.

Is used toothpaste gunk bad for the environment aside from maybe leading animals to the spot of spit? What do you guys do...spit, swallow or pack it out?

Ever notice there's a poison warning on the tube of toothpaste?

Dude shouldn't swallow. Might make a titch sick, since it's soap-based.

Spit for sure. I can barely use it as it is. It gags me. I never have found a brand that doesn't gag me. Newergirl on the other hand, would eat tubes of it if I'd let her. I guess I'd spit it in the backcountry too. I'm sure it wouldn't be the end of the environment.

But 4 out of 5 dentist recommened that you at least put it in your mouth. It's a personal decision if you spit or swallow.

What was that? I thought I heard a group of plaintive, disappointed sighs?

Hmm. Weird.

If ya lived in Arkansas you wouldn't have to worry about brushing your teeth.

I knew you were baiting...
but I had to bite (Oooh! Did I say that?!) because I couldn't imagine what you might possibly be referring to.

I always spit out my toothpaste, even in the backwoods.

my dog usually gets to my toothpaste after i spit it out before anything else has a chance to. i've always wondered about that one though.
i suspect i do the same thing everyone else does, spit it out and cover it up before anyone sees what i did.

I dig a hole, eight inches deep, and spit my tooth paste into it, making sure to fill it in, tamp it down gentley and spread leaves and such over all, to insure a natural appearance.

Or not. I spit in the bushes, or campfire ring, if there is one.

Didja know that the toothbrush was invented in Arkansas?

Anywhere else, and it would have been called a "TEETHBRUSH" ;O)

I leave the toothpaste home and make do with brush and water. I figure my teeth can remain healthy without toothpaste while I'm in backcountry....

I like to use baking soda. Carry a little of it in a ziplock baggie. Don't have to worry about it because it can be spit out or swallowed.

You drive a car or SUV to the woods
and then you worry about whether or not you're harming the environment by spitting toothpaste (sweetened soap) on the ground? Get real.

also Violin's link very interesting.

My question is to those of you that have public water: Is your water florinated?

Many water co.'s do treat the water with floride, This is a very contraversial area in public health.
I'm not in disagreement with you guys, but my gut feeling on this one is that it is just gross

When at home I spit (reasons already discussed previously here) but in the backcountry I swallow. I'm too leary of the possibility that it might attract critters. I don't think it's harmful to the environment.

Spit into the fire ring, or scrape up some leaves and stuff then cover it up if no fire ring.

New Girl I can't help but put a comment about this. If you are gagging you are doing something wrong:)

kodiak I cant blame newgie for that as I have the same reaction. I have nearly thrown up over some brands. I did find a tube of cinnimon awhile back that worked but they promptly quit making it.

I read that thread title and thought "Oh my god ..." I don't know why but I clicked on it ... the big bold text on my computer screen SPIT OR SWOLLOW

one of the older nurses walked up behind me and read the title before I saw her- then she hurried away - now I had to chase after her and tell her it was about toothpaste.

LOL Dawn, that Buddur, always getting you into trouble!

I use baking soda while backpacking, and I have learned to walk over to a bushy area before brushing. To spit or drool are the only options with that stuff.

All natural toothpaste is like all natural soap, it doesn't work. Maybe if patchouli oil covered bad breath as well as B.O. some of us would not have to worry about whether to spit or swallow.

Me too.......it was the top thread, so

Anyways, I use Arm & Hammer powdered toothpaste in the backcountry, and I spit. Its a little salty, but its not as bad as toothpaste. At home I have plenty of water and a sink to rinse out. Swallowing toothpaste is like swallowing soap....gross!

Neither . . . .
My dentist says to use the least amount of toothpaste as possible. Why? Because todays brands are so abrasive it can be bad for the enamel in your teeth to use too much. At home I use a tiny amount to freshen my breath and then rinse and finish brushing with just the brush. On camping trips, I brush with just the brush and carry some of those little things that are like paper that melt on your tongue to freshen my breath. (And my Dentist says I have terrific oral hygiene. Only about 4 fillings in all of my teeth.)
