I wish ya'll would just quit the name calling. Both sides are as bad as the other.
I'm the only person active on TT that could make any difference here.
I live and VOTE in Mississippi.
I don't like Trent Lott, but a lot of people here do, black and white.
He brings home the bacon to Mississippi. For most people, that's all that counts.

Let's see... we'd need restrooms for whites, blacks, hispanics, asians...

This could get really complicated.

Yep. Trent surely brings home the bacon. I remember hearing about some of that "bacon" a couple of years ago. For the first time ever, it was specified where a group of C-130s would be based... In The Appropriations Bill that funded them. Guess where... Mississippi!

Funny Thing... the Pentagon hadn't requested the planes At All.

But if want to talk about the King of Pork, that's Bobby Byrd, hands down.

Interesting, even Rush Limbaugh called Lott's remarks "stupid" and "indefensible."

But truly loyal Repulicans will defend him anyway.

What Lott said was utterly indefensible and stupid. I don’t even want to attempt to explain or defend it. Yes there is a double standard on this stuff, but you have to take that into account before you open your stupid mouth.

Ya know, if our politicians weren't a bunch of kiss a$$ed wussies, we'd never even have this conversation.

Tea, ya don't know Ewker well enough to rip him like that (I know you were joking). Simmer down boy!

The majority of our politicians are completely worthless legislators, and have no idea what the majority of the people they represent want. I can't wait til voting goes "on-line"

BB, I think some politicians start out with some idea of what their constituents want and need. However, when they get to Washington, they have to play party politics in order to get any of their legislation passed. Before long, it all becomes party politics and they lose touch with their own ideals.
What would help this situation? A viable third party. There is room for more points of view than get debated between the Dems and the Pubs. Hell, they don't even really tell you where they stand, because there opponent would tear them apart if they actually took a stand on anything. If you have ever watched a debate with a third or fourth party present, you will notice that all of the participants have to address the issues or risk looking bad.

I listened to Lott’s explanation on Hannity today. Basically he said that he wasn’t thinking of Thurmond the Dixiecrat, but other reasons he admired the man. He pointed out that he was 7 when Thurmond ran. Thurmond reformed long ago and its possible Lott wasn’t thinking what so many people (myself included) read into his remarks. He’s apologized and done his best to explain what he meant. I’m inclined to let it go.

I say stuff here that might lead some to believe certain things. However, in my cae, it's mainly pure sarcasm, and in Trent's case, I'm sure it has more to do with kissing the a$$ of a 100 year old man, than his true beliefs. I know trent is a moron, but even if he really felt that way, he isn't dumb enough to come out and say it.

I've read his words, it's really all a bunch of spin.

Well turns out Lott said the same thing a number of times before... they've got documentation on him saying it in the early 80's.

Secondly, Lott played around with very racist organizations and catered to them. He filed a friend of the court brief for BoB Jones University while they were being attacked for their policy prohibiting inter-racial dating. He had a column that appeared alongside incredibly racist stuff.

At the very least, Lott doesn't hold people's racism against them and is very comfortable associating, courting and working with extreme racists and can do so without expressing (or apparently thinking) thoughts of dissaproval.

Lott’s kind words about the Council of Conservative Citizens still troubles me too. He didn’t really handle Hannity’s questions about that too well. I’ve heard it explained that every southern Republican can tell you exactly what percentage of the white vote they need to win because the black vote automatically goes to the Democrats. Perhaps Lott and other politicians feel that they need the support of this group to win. Wouldn’t it be better to publicly disavow groups like that and do what they can to court the black vote? Instead we see attempts to suppress the black vote – like http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A27966-2002Dec8.html" target="_blank">distributing flyers in public housing complexes telling voters that if the weather is bad, they can vote a few days after election day.

There’s also the story about Trent’s days at the University of Mississippi. The FBI and the army raided the fraternity house where he was president during the two days of riots over the admission of the first black student and found a large cache of weapons. It’s reasonable to wonder what they were up to. The university held a celebration earlier this year to celebrate the school’s 40 years of integration – Senator Lott was prominently absent.

I agree that Trent Lott is an idiot. He's a cold bowl of grits. The Republicans are crazy to allow this retard to continue to lead the Senate. It seems that the definition of racism has changed in this country. I believe the definition of racism is a feeling of superiority of one race over another race. But in the minds of many it now means to criticize any policy that you don't like that other races do (affirmative action would fit here). You can't ever criticize anything stupid a black politician or black business person does or says (Cynthia McKinney when she went and appoligized to the Saudi Prince for what Giuliani said about the 10,000 dollars that was donated to New York). She was criticized and she started screaming racism. Jesse Jackson's apology for the Heimitown remarks was accepted. Lott did apoligize. Let's see, Senator Byrd is a former Klansman, I don't hear the blacks screaming in protest over him being in the Senate. I personally wished that Lott would go away. He is not an effective leader. I was really disappointed to find out that he would be Majority leader.

From Time:

tsk tsk tsk
These poor Dems/liberals still have nothing concrete to offer, so they continue to beat yet another frivilous horse.

Man! Where were all these outcries on the heels of the "Millions for Reparations March and Protest" held in DC last August? Proportionately same-level (national) Black leaders made comments like "I want to go up to the nearest White person and slap him", etc. That particular comment was excused away as a "hyperbole". Lotts comment a "hyperpole"? Perhaps - but you'll never hear it from mainstream media... just as you probably were not aware of the Dozens for Reparations March... due to the leftishness of the media. I, BTW, found no offense in the March or the comments of the speakers. They threatened me in no way. Perhaps I'm too confident for my (and my country's) own good...

Look. Strom Thurman was just another run-of-the-mill Dixiecrat (ala George Wallace) in the 40's. He was (and still is, perhaps) a product of his time and greographical place. But even George Wallace realized the err of his ways, and (figuratively) died in the arms of his best friend - a Black man.

Yesterday, I was approached in a parking lot by a crooked old man with a crooked old stick. He was lost. He had missed a turn in town - 10 miles away. He seemed a little frightened, but knew if he could get back to town, he could find his way from there. I did not know this man, but where I'm from, I'm expected to show him the utmost respect - treat him as if he were my own grandfather. I was very polite and respectful: "yes sir" this, and "yes sir" that. Some of the comments I've read here about Thurmond are very disrespectful and uncalled for. I've watched many many people (many family) suffer the consequences of a long life. Their end is often an ugly spectacle. The suffering... the getting lost in closets. It's awful. Leave an old man alone, will ya?

Trent Lott made a certain comment about and to a certain old man. Social (Southern?) mores dictate that in such an atmosphere as a mans 100th birthday party, speakers say complementary things - whether one agrees with their own comments or not. Lotts comments were not about Lott - they were about (and to) Thurmond.

I feel that Lotts comments were exclusively for the Man of the Hour - Strom Thurmond. If he had known how the Dems and libs were going to pry into this "private" affair, and make it public, I'm sure he would have opted for different language to express a "compliment".

In a nutshell:
A respectful gentleman paid a compliment to an elderly gentleman. He was only trying to make an achy old man feel a *little* better.

Lott will not resign.
His fate will be decided by the good people of Mississippi. Technically, it's none of our business...

So now William Kristol, Rush Limbaugh, David Frum and President Bush (and a host of others) are “poor Dems/liberals”?

I agree that some of the comments written here about a 100-year-old man were uncalled for and disrespectful.

Nobody (that I know of) has said Lott should resign from the Senate, but plenty of people from the right and left had called for him to step down as majority leader. Really, it would be better for Dems if he stayed on and his party rallied around him.

Paul Simon (who some refer to as 'a Democrat's Democrat') has made statements supporting his longtime friend and colleague Trent Lott, saying that he MUST have been joking.

All the same, it looks like it will benefit the opposition if Lott remains. There appears to be a schism in the Republican party; black Conservatives are hopping mad. Armstrong Williams is quoted (USA Today?) as saying that he was completely shocked and that Lott should resign.

I'll say it again: they were playing with fire paying tribute to someone like Thurmond.

I think that "nationalist" board makes it clear - what it means to say Strom Thurmond should have won.

I think people like Simon and Daschle(and myself actually)who initially figred Lott was just being nice to a 100 year old man, changed their minds when it turned out that Lott had said the same thing before.

I would be hard pressed to believe that there is anyone alive (excepting small children), that hasn't had a thought, that could be construed as racist, fly through their head.

This includes Geobeet, Pedxing, Violing and, of course, me.

I am also, more happily, convinced that most everyone does their best to NOT let theseunfortunate thoughts fly out of their mouths except maybe when cut off in traffic in the privacy of your own car).

I am CERTAINLY troubled that an individual of national prominence gives voice to his racist thoughts.

Dewdtart . . .let's stop being coy and stupid.

Just what the hell else could he possibly have been refering too when he made his comments???

To construe that his observation was regarding anything BUT segregation is just dumb.

See . . . I AGREE (suprisingly) with GOJO. I think that Trent Lott was just doing his best to honor, respect and pay tribute to Thurmond. For better or worse Thurmond dedicated his long life to public service, as best (presumably as he knew how). It was the right, honorable, and decent thing to gather in his name and pay tribute.

MY CONCERN . . .is that when speaking off the cuff, more than once, for a "cute", "friendly", "good 'ole boy" sort of gesture in Strom's direction . . .Trent has leaned on the reference to segregation.

I am reasonably sure that it was a mistake.

But why does THAT reference pop up out of his subconsciousness. What is bubbling up under Trent's hairpiece and trying to escape? A pointy white mask???

Seriously. I certainly have gotten the wrong first name for someone embedded in my head, and it comes out involutarily. Is that what happened to Trent. Is it a Tourette's syndrome thing?? He sees Strom and racist references pop out of him involuntarily????

If so . . .he should avoid strom in the future.

My concern is what is lurking beneath the hairpiece that occaisonally is vented in public.

He must be soooooooo carefully in public, and has had only a couple of documented slips . . . so what is seething below the cool surface???

What does he REALLLY think of blacks and other minorities??

When he is reviewing appropriation and spending, health, medicare, aid to dependent children issues . . .what does he REALLY think about blacks and minorities??

I am concerned.
