The Free Speech issue is a canard. EVERYONE (politicians included) have the perfect right to say whatever idiotic racist crap they want. By the same token, EVERYONE ELSE has the right to pillory them for it. They aren't guaranteed ACCEPTANCE for their bigotry --- what a joke!

savage, I know Truman fired MacArthur.

MacArthur is lucky he didn't go to Levenworth.

I think MacA-hole said that in '44

The fact that Steve Hiker is defending Trent Lott tells you all you need to know to conclude that Lott's remark was racist.

Steve:

Political Science 001: In a democracy, we choose our leaders based on their politics. Criticizing a political leader because of the sides he chooses on key issues is the heart of politics. If we aren't supposed to criticize a political leader for his politics, that kind of limits the discussion.

As far as I am concerned - he doesn't need to apologize. He should just come clean about what he believes in and not try to speak out of both sides of his mouth. That way, Senators who vote to keep his a majority leader can be clear on who they are voting for. And, the public can be clear on who the Senators voted for.

Steve: At least you are honest about your yearnings for segregation.

good one violilt......
-- how can anyone equate PC to segregation. it's not merely an unpopular belief, but also demeaning, disrespectful and indignant. it goes against everything america stands for, and the constitution, which mr. lott has a duty to uphold."
jmitch

PC is bull$h!t. lott said nothing about racism or segregation. you are not telling the truth. how come your so smart that you know what someone is thinking? can you teach me that trick? that's what is such a joke about this whole thing, he din't say it. i can't believe even the pubs are backing away from it. he did not advocate "slavery" or "the holocaust", he just told some old geezer that he liked him. that the old guy did a good job. what was he gonna say...."you sucked strom, have fun in hell."? did it ever occur to ya'll that if strom or lott were so horribly evil that they wouldn't have been elected all those times? also, lott os the same poor slouch that got booed off the stage at the mondale's political rally which was supposed to be a funeral(reall PC of them dems, don'tcha think?)

tom mentioned that alot of people fought and died to end the wrongs of this country's past...

the facts;jefferson davis--democrat

pretty much all the congressmen of the south during slavery--democrat

abe lincoln--republican

al gore sr(D)--voted AGAINST the civil rights bill

more republicans voted FOR the civil rights bill than democrats

liberal democrats are the REAL masters of the plantation, holding minorities hostage by making them dependant on government to live, thereby earning minorities allegance via blackmail and fradulent scare tactics.

liberal democrats encourage racial strife and feed tensions whenever possible as part of their grand scheme to seperate us as a nation. we will never be able to move foward as long as they keep dragging us back into the muck of "them vs us".

many minorities have a VERY inaccurate view of us white people because of this fodder. it's a horrible scandalous pile of crap that you are all guilty of shoveling onto.

ps...i agree that lott is not a very strong leader. but this incident is not an impeachable thing.

If the Democratic Party hadn’t taken 100 years to exorcise the ghost of Stephen Douglass, we wouldn't have had all these problems over all these years.

See? I didn’t mention racism or segregation. Do you have the slightest clue as to what I may have been thinking or do you still need thinking lessons from jmitch? Was I just trying to make an old dead man feel bad for a little bit or was there some other meaning to my words?

another swing and a miss by violilt....
douglas? that analogy is rediculous and based on a false assumption. you are so smart violin, how come you're not a senator?

you are tearing the country apart for what? have you thought this through? it's kinda like when there's a bad thread on this board that you think is destructive. do you join in and contribute to the negativeness or do you ignore it and lead by example. the answer to racial problems is be nice to people. be an example. that's how were gonna end it. teach your kids to be nice and respect people. not by a bloodthirsty coup of senate controll. ya'll are suckahs. pawns in the real illusion. i see it plain as day and i thought of it all by myself. see, jmitch aint thinkin, he's wishin. . . .. wishin his team didn't loose the election. how come you always skirt my points violin? once again i ask you how could lott get elected all those times if he was so horrible? there are lots of black people in mississippi. ya'll act like he took the position by gunpoint. this is a load and you know it. well your not foolin me. i see the same old pattern of the politics of personal destruction and class warefare. devide the nation to conquer it. good thinkin man. that's what got us into this mess....and it was the democrats that did it the first time too(civil war). it's your only choice i suppose;illusion. people won't buy into what you REALLY believe. so you have to resort to scaring senior citizens that bush is gonna push them off of cliffs in thier wheelchairs. i would think you had more character than to gain your way by deception. dirty pool man. your true colors are flying high. ya know, like i said, the repubs went too far with monicagate and it hurt them in the end. this will be no different. the feeding frenzy of the leftist media will ware down the publics patience. so go left young man, maybe they'll believe it if you say it often enough and loud enough.

Trent Lott and the GOP grew up together in the South. They both have a painful secret.

I was hoping to make the point that Democrats made concessions to racists for years in order to win their support. Johnson’s advocacy of the 1964 Civil Rights Act handed the Southern segregationists to Republicans since then. It was wrong for the Democratic Party to cater to a moral wrong – just as it is for Republicans today. Most people get that dewd.

As for repeating a lie often and loudly, why do you repeat the misinformation fed you ditto-heads about Albert Gore Sr? Yes he voted against the 1964 Civil Rights Act. He later apologized for it, and called it a big mistake. He was concerned that it went too far too fast and would be used to cut off funding of schools who appeared to be in violation. A full examination of his record reveals that he voted against the Poll Tax of 1942, was one of only two Southern senators who refused to sign the racist Southern Manifesto in 1956, he voted for Civil Rights Act of 1957, nominated 2 young black students from Memphis for appointment to US Air Force Academy (risky in Tennessee in 1957), voted for 1965 Voters Rights Act and the1968 Fair Housing Act. Racial politics and his stand against the war in Viet Nam led to his defeat in 1970.

As for me ‘skirting your points’ – if you’ll look back to my link a few days ago, you’ll see that Lott won last time with a whopping 11% of the black vote.

The Usual Crap
In answer to the original question posed by this thread........Yes, he does seem to be a dyed in the wool racist. His record shows it. Face facts. He is an embarassment to his party, state and country. He does not represent all southerners, just a few diehard believers in the Lost Cause. The other senator from Mississippi, Thad Cochran does not share Lott's view.

Being a southerner is not synomynous with being a racist or religious whacko as I've personally heard. The southerners I know and love are among the best of people. Interesting to me that one poster here now ridicules southerners but at one time used to glorify the CSA. Hmmm? Maybe you could trade notes with Trent.

Is it such a great surprise that he is a racist? Or is this just an opportunity for people to make noise and trash others?

As usual this thread has descended into a name-calling fest by anonymous, faceless internet surfers, trashing southerners, liberals, dogs, cats, etc. Give me a break or rather I could just unplug.

This just in:
Trent Lott to Step Aside as Majority Leader

CBS News reports exclusively that Senator Trent Lott has begun telephoning colleagues in the US Senate, telling him that he is preparing to step aside as Senate Majority Leader.
Lott has been under pressure for weeks following remarks he made at a 100th birthday celebration for fellow senator -- and onetime presidential candidate -- Strom Thurmond. Lott's remarks have been widely interpreted as supporting Thurmond's segregationist platform.

Lott will hold onto his Senate seat. He could be making a public statement on the matter as early as this afternoon.

The idea that we’re going to keep incarcerating and keep incarcerating - pretty soon we’re not going to have a young African American male population in America – they’re all gonna be in prison or dead. - guess who???

Where's are those great defenders marko, Vile, ect. on this? Havn't heard a single peep from them about this racist statement.
They must approve of it.
