Spring Fling Cookoff at Lost Cove
The Sierra Club of Middle Tennessee is sponsoring a Spring Fling Backpacking Cookoff March 21-23 at Lost Cove near Spencer, TN.

We will camp Friday night in a primitive campground setting. Saturday, we will hike a developed trail 5 miles and set up camp near a stream. There is no designated campsite. We will have the cookoff Saturday evening. There will be prizes.

Lost Cove is on private property. Fall Creek Falls State Park adjoins Lost Cove. There are caves, waterfalls, and wildlife in the woods at Lost Cove. The cost per person for the whole weekend will be $11.68, payable upon arival. There is a charge for camping since Lost Cove is on private property.

For additional information and for anyone who might want to get involved with this event, contact Katherine Pendleton at Adelicia1@aol.com

I thought Katibug wouldn't go on any hike with more than 15 people.

You better sign up quick.

Recently, I made a decision to limit the number of participants on the trips that I will be leading to a maximum of 8 people. Even that size of a group has the potential to harm the environment in a wilderness area. If each of us do not take personal responsibility for taking care of our wilderness areas through our actions, there won't be places for future generations to enjoy.

I was wrong, it wasn't 15, it is 8.

This event is being held on private property and the owner regulary allows large groups to camp in the backcountry provided that LNT ethics are practiced. I'm expecting about 25-50 people to attend. Ordinarily, I don't backpack with more than 8 folks. This event is an exception because I have had a request from some of the Middle TN folks to have a different kind of event close to Nashville. Also, this event is being held to make more folks aware of the Sierra Club.

I realize that most of the TT crowd does not support my environmental approach regarding the wilderness. The only reason that I posted this event on TT is that there are a few TT'ers who enjoy participating on trips associated with me and the Sierra Club crowd.

This outing will be held in an area that is off the beaten track. Come and explore and enjoy if you like-stay home if you like. We'll have fun regardless of who shows up.

It will probably be early February before I will know. This could be a good hike to take the kids. Just have to wait and see.

Yes, you can stay at the campground before or after. Also, they have cabins for rent. Their phone number is 1-866-LST-COVE. Be sure to tell them that you are with the Sierra Club event for that weekend so they will give you a discounted rate.

For anyone who wants to bring kids, where we'll be camping Friday night there is a playground on part of the property. Check out the website at www.windingcreekmountainresort.com

It's going to be an adventure hiking in a new place. I drove up there last month and met the owner of the place and looked around. The Sierra Club is holding a wilderness first aid training course there the weekend of May 2-4. I like the fact that the owner cut us a good deal for both events.

Location of Trip Changed
Thanks Ewker for listing the link to the updated info. Sorry Chili for not getting back to you about this. Have not been on-line on this site regularly for the past few months. Too busy with other stuff and out backpacking 2-3 times/month. Sounds like most folks have made plans to go to Fiery Gizzard. The group size for the trip to Savage Gulf is at 8 right now.
