Head of pet waste-removal firm leaves thieves holding the bag

By Roy Appleton
The Dallas Morning News

DALLAS -- Matt Boswell had that holiday spirit after Christmas shopping last week in Frisco, Texas.

Then he saw some stinking thief messing around in the back of his pickup truck outside the Stonebriar Centre mall.

``I yelled at him,'' said Boswell, who watched the dirty dog haul two plastic bags from the truck to a waiting car and flee.

The Little Elm, Texas, resident didn't give chase or waste time calling police, however.

No. 1, the loss was a mere drop in the bucket.

No. 2, this is the season of sharing, a time for surprises.

``I sure wish I could have been there when he opened the bags,'' said Boswell, ``entremanure'' of a pet waste-removal company.

Those gift bags together contained about 25 pounds of leftovers from Texans' lawns in Irving and North Dallas.

``I just couldn't stop laughing,'' said Boswell, who had parked in the open so people, including thieves, could read the words painted on the sides of his truck.

``It's pretty obvious what we do,'' he said. ``It says we scoop poop.''

Boswell said he and his three employees weekly take in about a ton of dung.

And if the guys in the black, four-door sedan want some more, he said, ``we have plenty where that came from.''

font size=3>Indictment reports `wrong,' DeLay says
Denies discussions of defense fund

By GEBE MARTINEZ
Houston Chronicle Washington Bureau

WASHINGTON -- House Majority Leader Tom DeLay on Tuesday downplayed reports that he is preparing, politically and financially, for an indictment in Texas on charges that he broke state campaign finance laws.

"If the law is the standard in the state of Texas, then we have no problems and we don't anticipate a problem," DeLay, R-Sugar Land, said emphatically during a news conference in Washington.

"I have not been notified that I am being investigated; I have not been subpoenaed," he said.

Targets of grand jury investigations aren't always notified, however.

The Houston Chronicle reported last week that DeLay had told a group of Houston supporters March 8 that he may need to raise more money for a legal defense fund. There also have been reports in Washington that DeLay has discussed with some House Republicans a GOP conference rule that requires party leaders to step aside if they are indicted on a felony punishable by at least two years in prison. DeLay is the second-highest-ranking Republican in the House.

"All the reports are wrong. The reports in Washington are particularly wrong," DeLay said. Speculation that he would consider stepping aside is "ridiculous," he added.

DeLay acknowledged that during a recent meeting with financial supporters in Houston, he discussed what he called a political witch hunt by Travis County District Attorney Ronnie Earle, a Democrat. DeLay denied there were discussions about a legal defense fund for this case.

"None of that happened," DeLay said. "I don't have a transcript of everything that I said. Obviously, somebody sitting in that room -- even though he gives me money, does not exactly support me -- ran quickly to the Houston Chronicle. I don't know what he said, and I really don't care what he said."

For the past year, Earle has been looking into the alleged use of corporate contributions in state legislative campaigns in 2002 by the Texans for a Republican Majority Political Action Committee, a campaign organization created by DeLay. Such use is against state law.

An aide to DeLay said that during the Houston meeting, there was talk about the high costs associated with a legal defense. The discussion centered on DeLay's need for a legal defense fund in 2000, when the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee sued him for racketeering, said the aide, Stuart Roy. The lawsuit was dropped, and DeLay's legal bill totaled about $600,000, Roy said.

The grand jury investigating DeLay's committeeended its term. A new grand jury is scheduled to be impaneled next week to continue the inquiry.

Texas Lawmaker Suggests Asians Adopt Easier to Pronounce Names

I, for one, would like to suggest this old bag adopt a different face. And a nice Asian name, such as Phuck Hu.

Maybe that woman would have an easier time pronouncing those names if she took the marbles out of her mouth and learned English.

not racist but definitely ignorant. (legal) immigrants have gone thru a lot to come here, much more so than someone born here. we can make some small concessions. a person shouldnt have to give up an important part of their heritage just because some redneck is too lazy to try to pronounce correctly

It's a throwback to all those whose names were 'americanised' after they arrived at Ellis Island.

"Aw Hell, I can't pronounce that #&%!$!   Your name is now 'Smith'."
