this weekend i went on some dayhikes to my regular stomping grounds. i parked at awesome hoagland vista and hiked the swamp trail, short but incredibly scenic with deep hemlock/ pine forests and babbling streams, plus mtn laurel and ground pine. some great potential campsites. i also hiked gooseberry trail, with cool boulders, ledges, outcrops and hemlock. still a bit of snow, so i got a workout.

I went winter backpacking up there about 10 years ago and camped up near East Branch. It's a small creek that flows out near Bear Wallow pond. There was a lot of people ice fishing on the pond when I hiked by in the afternoon. I didn't think many people would be out because it was so cold. Below zero wind chills and -5 at night, but ice fisherman are a hardy bunch.
