Tc3 Update

“Tc3 Update: The event was such a success that ownership is being migrated to a commercial entity. This group recognizes the powerful impact of the event both financially, and as a service to the backpacking community.

Those who served on Tc2 staff this year are invited to be a part of the planning for Tc3. I will pass along details of who to contact at some later time if you have interest in either being a staff member or entering the event. This will no longer be TownDawg's annual get-together, and I will not be collecting registration money. The location of Tc3 has been decided, and is a secret.

In speaking with my contacts, we agree that this event should, and must be a BACKPACKING event. Our plans are to have a group campsite in order to allow folks to park their cars, and fellowship on the opening day -- but the actual competition will be a 'survivor' style event where the players will hike into the mountains.

Currently in the works, the winner of the contest will be awarded a commercially available meal using their winning recipe. (This is not completely negotiated as of right now.) We also anticipate giving away approximately $1500 to $3000 worth of gear and assorted prizes.

The location will support approximately 100 entries. Judging will be in totality, not just one meal. We are considering being able to 'vote off' those whose meals are substandard.

Any further details will be forthcoming, but that is all I will say for now.”

“I think the real contest would have been who got voted off first last time, me or tarabull. We both put lots of thought into our entries.”

“I thought it would be better if the contestants had to carry all their supplies/gear at least 7 miles into the contest site. More realistic, and more likely to produce better backpacking meals. Great idea Tdawg! I'm thinking of an entry already!”

“The first thing that came to my mind is wondering how we're gonna get all that beer to the campsite. It was so easy to just drag the cardboard box my 12 pack came in from one area around the fire to another. I guess I'll just have to take whiskey to TC3.

“T-Dawggy, I think it was just fine the way it was this year. I, and some of the other judges took into consideration the feasibility of packing in the meals to be cooked. This is prolly why the guy that won last year didn't win this year.

Well...I will need to confer with Towndawg if I am to try to get some cable networks interested...February is the time I was told to send in the paperwork. So...TD if you want cable in on this...you'd better talk at me. I have all the paperwork ready to go.

And another thing...

if I'm going to donate another hiking stick next year...it should awarded as part of FIRST PRIZE...this is not to fill my ego, but to make it perfectly clear...you can buy a stove anywhere, you can buy a sleeping bag anywhere, you can BUY gear ANYWHERE as they are all mass produced!!! but to get a handcrafted hiking stick, is NOT something that can be picked up just ANYWHERE!. The legacy behind what I do, is something that only a few of you know anything about...but there are those that know and thanks to them that said anything to me.

The ownership/rights will be sold/licensed to an outside entity. This won't be my project no more. I am being retained for some personal insight, but this thing is too big for TownDawg to manage, even WITH an incredible support staff; e.g., what we had this year.

There are some basic things this move will accomplish.

1) Legitimacy

2) Marketing

3) Integrity

4) Longevity.

We want an event for BACKPACKERS, not weekend warriors and wanna-be's. The location for Tc3 takes into account all of your suggestions/gripes, and resolves the campcamping issue completely.

Give me time folks, don't debate this thing to death even before the ink is dry on the contract.”

All parties recognize the validity of several points of view. We hope to find common ground in there somewhere. I have a meeting with several folks in the next few weeks to finalize the transfer of ownership, and nail down the last of the details.”

This whole TV deal makes me wonder. Is the whole point of future TC's a profit? Will those who volunteered for the first two be financially rewarded for their work in promotion and corporate donations? I have no prob with anyone making a buck. I just wonder to what ends. PLEASE TD dont take this the wrong way. I am just curious as to what the point of TC is. I am not trying to be crass, I will offer a parallel to illustrate...

When Mark Burnett conceived the idea of the eco-challenge (shortly after falling out of the Raid-galoiusies) his plan was solely financial. His planner set up a five year plan with goals. Each was met and/or exceeded. I love the eco-challenge. I just like to know its history and purpose.

I hope the planning goes well, h@ck I cant even make a trip to the store without a list let alone plan an endeavor such as this.”
