Howdy folks. I was hoping some kind TT'ers could give me any info/opinions they might have on the city of Augusta, Georgia. Anything about the town, the area will be appreciated. Also, info on outdoor activities in the area would be great - things like packing/hiking/climbing/whatever in the local area or how long a drive it is to such activities. Thanks folks. I know trying to get opinions out of TT'ers is like pulling teeth, but I thought I'd try (yes, that's sarcasm).

Peace. MM.

Augusta opinion
Many, many moons ago I lived in Atlanta, used to go to Augusta on biz quite often.

I used to know this girl there, Barbara...we used to meet in the bar at the Ramada Inn, right off Rte 20 if memory serves,

I have INCREDIBLY fond memories of Augusta. What do you want to know?

I liked living there. I liked North Augusta also. Beech Island is also nice. You can find plenty of things to do nearby. Cost of living isn't to bad, or at least wasn't then.

This place has its moments, <G>.

Hmmm... There are a few hiking trails around, but there's not much elevation change. Most of the "Real Backpacking" is 3+ hours away in the North Ga mountains, though you can head south to the ocean for some beach hiking also. I keep saying I'm going to check out the Okeefenokee Swamp one of these days...

I'm not up on the climbing. I think the folks at American Wilderness Outfitters have a wall and sell some hardwear --- they would be the folks to know about that.

As far as the culture goes, you'll fit in better if you're Baptist, Republican and like to fish, <GRIN>. If you tell people that you like to go into the woods without taking a gun they will "look at you funny".

I don't know what else you may be interested in... we've got a little bit of everything around here, <G>. Live theatre and the live music scene has been picking up in the last few years. Downtown seems to be revitalized some.

The monster trucks and pro wrestling come through town once in a while... and then there's that golf tournament (excuse me, "tuna-mint") in April.

I wonder what Skully might say? <CRINGE> LOL

I Pity The Fool ........
who has to move to Augusta,Ga. My advice, don't do it. Or if you have to, buy a house with a huge A/C and be prepared to hibernate from the beginning of May until the end of October.
>
The Savannah River divides Augusta, GA from North Augusta, SC.
It's about the only of value in the whole area. You'll need to buy a boat or canoe. You can use it on the river or at Clarks Hill (Strom Thurmond Reservoir) which is about 18 miles upriver.

I like it in Augusta. Must be the company I keep. (Hi G00SE and Sauron!) There're some pretty decent dayhiking trails around the area, mostly at the lake. The mountains of eastern Tennessee, western North Carolina, and northern Georgia are all within a 4 hour or less driving distance. In an hour or two more you can get to western Virginia.

What Solitary Hiker said about the heat in the summer is very true. You can get acclimated, though. Just drink a lot of water.

I haven't really checked out the hiking to the south yet, although that is on the agenda for this winter. Speaking of which, Tilt are you going to the Ocala ECT in February?

There are some horse events in town on occasion that can be interesting if you like that sort of thing. There's a local hockey team and a local baseball team if you like sports. They're alright. And of course, Atlanta (with 2 REIs) is only a 2 hour drive away.

It's really a pretty decent locale. I like it anyway.

Like I said, it has its moments!

SH is on target about the air conditioning. If the AC goes down, You Die. No two ways about it! LOL

Somehow I neglected to mention that Billy Morris (local arch conservative newspaper magnate extrordinaire) is a tremendous Horse Dude, so they have friends in high places, <G>

The running comment about Augusta has always been that it's not that far to get somewhere you might actually Want to be, <GRIN>

Hmmmm... how far *is* that drive to Oh-cala?

I must admit there is great turkey, whitetail deer, and quail hunting around the Augusta area. The river is nice and going to the Masters is fun. BUT the heat and humidity are unreal. And don't think I'm some pale, doughy-lookin, snowbird wussy from up North. I grew up down here. It's just that Disgusta is in a isothermal band that runs from Macon,Ga, through Columbia, SC, and up towards Raleigh, NC. That country is isolated from the moderating effects of the summer Atlantic ocean winds and too far from the mountains of Appalachia. The place reminds me of Gen. Phil Sheridan's quote about Texas. It goes like this.

Lizs, I could walk out of my door and be at the gates of the Augusta National in 20 minutes, on foot. By car: less than 5. I can't wait to see what happens this Spring!

Ol' Hootie and what's-her-name-Burke make quite a pair, don't they? No one knows why they call him 'hootie'. We don't think it has anything to do with hootERs, but we could be wrong.

There's no such thing as bad publicity, right?

Damn, I bet you're a UGA grad. Are ya? Those kooks were the worse thing about that dreadful city. And as far as you living twenty minutes from Augusta National, hell everyone in Disgusta lives twenty minutes from the place. It's not like you can just drive over to the clubhouse, have the vallet park the Caddy, and stroll around the links. Tell me this? When was the last time you even got a ticket to a practice round, much less a ticket to the Masters on Thursday, Friday, Sat. or Sun?

Why do some folks have to degrade others to get their kicks?

tsk tsk.

BTB, I've been to the tournament every year since I was about 7 years old, LOL. It was the year Roberto di Vincenzo signed the incorrect scorecard and was disqualified... 1966?

In fact, I was just getting my old tickets in order yesterday. I have a wad of them: 2 or 3 from just about every year since 1978. An antique dealer tells me they're selling them to tourists for a hundred bucks apiece, <Wooo Hoooo!>.

You really should've gotten on the list before that shindig became so trendoid, SH. I hear that before the television coverage they couldn't give them away... 5 bucks at the drugstore back in the mid-50s. Not Anymore, eh?

(and I have my own tickets now, <SMILES>)

It's kind of fun to see the old boys squirm in their current fiasco. Old Hootie really shot himself in the foot multiple times.

There used to be quite a few locals who were members: serious golfers who weren't necessarily so well-heeled. The dues weren't very high, supposedly. But times have changed and so has the membership. Most of the local crowd from my parents' generation have passed on. Now you have people like Charles Shultz and his ilk... Captains of Industry Fresh From Government Service and Whatnot.

I heard Bill Gates was trying to get in, but I don't know what the status of that is. Maybe they'll take Melinda and Bill can come with her?

I was born in Augusta, actually Fort Gordon - the local army base. I have no memories of the area. My parents remember it as being kind of a dirty town but that was 33 years ago.

I work with a girl who just moved from Augusta. She is a recent UGA grad and the nightlife wasn't what she wanted, nor were the guys. She says there was a nice paved parkway where she rode her bike.

Good Luck.

I heard Billy got in. I s'pose he took the spot of someone who resigned in protest. I haven't actually experienced the joy of that one week in spring. I only know that it is HIGHLY recommended to go out of town then. I'm thinking....hiking trip.

I'm not exactly sure on the drive time to Ocala NF. G00SE estimates about 4-4 1/2 hours.

I went to the tournament every year I lived there. Ben Crenshaw won it the first time and then the German Bernhart Langer won the next two years as I recall. I'm glad you get to go every year. But I'll bet those tickets are in your father's name cause the only way most locals get them is to inherit them. I'm also happy that you love your home. You should. But I've been to and lived in several cities in the South. And Augusta Georgia is not by any shape or form the best of the lot. I'm making a objective observation. I'm not putting you down.

I lived in Augusta for nearly a year. It's a year of my life that I'll never get back. The weather was either beautiful or downright scary. Had some close calls from tornadoes a couple of times. Thunderstorms like I've never seen before. Drank a lot of beer there...and there used to be a Holiday Inn on Washington Rd. I think. There was bar in the Hotel called Adam's and they put on a free spread every night as long as you came in and bought alcohol which of course was never a problem. Just a few memories...there was this club called Marlowes...wonder if that is still there. This was in 1985...so I'm dating myself.

I can't let a setup like that go by ---- It's against my religion!!

Hmmm.... If I recall correctly, Marlowe's was just off Washington Road, too.   The Holiday Inn is still there.   I wonder if they still call the bar "Adam's" (they just might).   Downtown has tried to come back to life in the last decade or so.... bars, live music, restaurants, some off-the-wall stores.   That sort of thing.

1985.... I was probably down at the ER playing foosball.
