we have 250+ acres my family just bought..i've been hiking fencelines and scouting ponds. It's all secondary hardwood forest, with areas of clearcut and planted pine.

Lets say i wanted to play around and go out there with just about nothing.kinda test my skills closeby.

What would you say can be taken, and still be called barebones camping?

knife?...blanket?...plastic sheet?
filter and canteen?...

enough to be safe...but have to provide on your own?

getting lost isn't a big issue, and there is running water.

lets see your responses...do i go with a sleeping bag and a walmart bag...or a pocketknife and a canteen?

Leave the plastic at home. Take a axe or hatchet or saw, some old wool blankets and hand full of lg. safety pins to keep the blanket edges together and something to cook in and drink out of. If the pond is stocked bring some fishing gear. I bet 'bootkiller' would be good for warmth and fresh rabbit or groundhog for a main course.

You should be able to make a descent shelter out of the pines and any cedars standing around another thing to look for long grass, aka winter wheat etc. Harvesting large bundles will help out on the roof and sleeping pad. Protecting yourself from the elements, since home is acres away should be #1 priority. A good roof is hard to beat.

i'm thinking along the daypack idea...but with my sleeping bag...cuase yea i wanna test my limits..but i don't excately wanna feel like a popsicle the whole time. It's only 60-40's here right now..so that's not too bad...and the one pond is fishless..just rotenalled it to kill the trashfish for restocking...but the other bigger back lake is huge...noone's seen it from the ground..only helicopter sweeps of the land

250 acres?!!
That sounds awesome, Opie! I would probably take just the essentials...sleeping bag, water filter, compass and matches. I like Briar's idea of creating a natural shelter...which here you can get away with, since its your own property.
Throw in some "cushion" with a little food to start with, some fishing line, journal, and a camera!

Explore and enjoy. You can map the whole place out for the huge TT gathering you'll have there someday.
