A trip Report
Well, it's a start

All I got while I was on this trip was "you're doing what everyone else wishes they could do"

it's an east coast road trip, i'm trying to do a good job on this trip report and it's taking me forever, i've got days 0-3 done, take a look and let me know what you think, let me know if there's any bugs, and you can't go past day 3 yet, so just check it out if ya want, and stick around for the next 30 days.

I suppose it'd be nice if I included a link

Yep! You did start indexing the days at 0. Must be some kind of closet C programmer, <G>

hey simer, your link to photos isn't working. Did you use your "community page"?

more then likely bit... it is far easier to code a 0 then a one in a large number of cases 8}

oddly enough it is faster to xor a number to itself then to load a zero into a variable.

Hey Simer!

I love the spirit of this whole thing. I love road trips. One time I drove to Mexico and back - from Michigan - in 1.5 weeks between end of classes and my only exam. I guess Taco Bell wasn't enough that semester.

Just a couple of things: include really cool stories and take out some of the lists of details. The Canadian north shore of Lake Superior is one of my favorite places in the entire world. I'd have loved to hear some more stories there. You might also try to focus on what you learned each day. Use the details/anecdotes to make a point.

You got searched? Hehe. I've crossed about 60 or 70 times in my life. I've never gotten searched. It might actually be fun once. I guess I look too nice. The bad wood was probably in response to the Ash borer, which is killing lots of trees in the Midwest. We have a quarantine on some wood in Michigan.

But, Simer, I have to say that I'm impressed that you actually pulled this off. A 32 day road trip is something. The big thing is to keep this part of you alive when you start to work. The world is a wonderful place with great people. Curiosity keeps you alive.

Simer, I can't figure out why your photo link doesn't work, but it doesn't. I found the albums searching in webshots by your username.

I spent 4 months in the back of my pickup back in 94.
Took my mt. bike, a cooler, some tools and loads of clothes. I spent alittle under 2 months in the LA area working for some cash thru a temp agency. had a buddy that live in Anaheim Hills and a aunt that lives in Pomona. I stayed about two weeks with my buddy until his parents got tried of the 180 lbs cockroach that was soaking in the rays on their back porch. Then it was off to sleep in the neighborhoods again. Got busted twice by the cops for being homeless ie car camping illegally.

Got tons of pics I need to scan. Really one memorable time. I especially enjoyed the company of a real 'hobo' in Pioneer Square, Seattle. We puffed and chatted into the weee hours about GOD. He was the Midnight Lutheran Preacher that left his family in San Jose. He reeked of freaking urine.

I've also have done part of the Alcan Hiway from Haines Junction to Squarebanks in Feb. no less.

Squarebanks and Las Anchorage!!! I would have like to spend more time than I did in Fairbanks but I was press for time since I was on mission. I made the drop and then drove to Anchorage that night, all night in order to catch a early AM flight back to the 48. Its quite the long drive when your speed in 40 to 50 mph.

heh, heh. Yep. Las Anchorage.

You can do better time on the Parks Highway now. Its just the flat section between Fairbanks and Nenana with the frost heaves that is still hard to drive fast.

I forget... is it SHL or SHR that multiplies by two?

Hey Path,

Sounds like you still have some connection up there. Have you every thought about trying to get a few other TT'ers and head for the 'Gates' or some other BC area for a float and hike. Like a 2 weeker in mid to late summer.

My friend keeps bugging me to go up in the summer and float the Gulkana with him. I left my Penobscot canoe with him. Problem is, I prefer winter. No bugs!

Gates would be nice. My preference would be August. Its out for me in 2003, maybe another year. I'd also like to do a backcountry ski/snowshoe trip in March, maybe in the White Mountains or similar area.

hmmm, yaz... SHL multiplies; SHR divides (it's been quite a while since that Assembler course). Wasn't it Mies van der Rohe who said, "God is in the details"?

Sorry about the tangent, Simer. You know how it goes around here! Sounds like a fun trip... so far...

tilt,
To be precise on the multiply you actually want to roll carry left and then branch on a carry to handle the overflow. shifting is only proper when you are absolutly sure the result will fit in the original register or you want to discard the most signifacant part of the number.

I am not a programmer, I get paid to work! :}

First of all, we almost had time for a hike in New york - unless you're down by the catskills, 'cause we had a day and a half to get from Niagara to the Middle of Maine. And I gave you as much of a heads up as i could - I posted several times b4 I left MN, and didn't reach a comp again 'til Maine.

As for that map, as you probably figured out the big blue line is our route - vauguely, and the little green x's are where we stayed if you can see them.

Simer, where are/were (?) you living in MN? I saw youwent through Dulute, which is REAL close to where I used to live (Cloquet Clo-kay).

Chief - I was just up in Cloquet for the weekend with my family, we stayed in the camper cabin at jay cooke state park, then we drove up to duluth and stayed in a hotel, though i don't think those count as bag nights i had a good time with the family. I'm from west central MN, about a 4 hr drive to Duluth, I spend a lot of time up that direction - the closest hiking destination on the superior hiking trail, i used to spend a lot of time in the bwca, but i haven't been there for a while, the camp i go to is north of grand marais, and i spend a lot of time up that direction too.

For this trip report, i really haven' spent a lot of time on it lately, though i've got friday the 13th done. This is the day you've all been waiting for i know, if you don't read any other days - go for this one - i'm not superstitious, but maybe i should be

Simer, I tried to read your trip report but it won't go to the 28th, assuming there is a 28th.

I spent many a day in Jay Cooke State Park. We would ride our bikes there before we could drive. Once me and a friend went from Cloquet to Jay Cooke, to Duluth, then the back roads back to Cloquet. That was one hell of a day. Did you cross thw swinging bridge? It's not like the old bridge, but it's still kind of cool.

I have also spent some time in the BWCA, but I couldn't tell you exactly where. We never went through an outfitter, we always planned our own intineraries. Probably did 4 trips altogether.

i'm not done typing past the 28th, i've said many times that i'm quite slow, i'm working on it.

I've spent quite a few days in jay cooke state park too, I did whitewater training on the st. louis, and spent a few nights there with friends, though it's quite a bike ride there for me.

back in the bwca, i've done countless trips with family, friends and camp, but it just doesn't appeal to me any more after the canadian tundra and all - though i'm still planning on hitting some areas by foot, and probably still some canoeing, i'm still a conoer no matter how much i think i'm a backpacker lol
