“OTTAWA, Canada (Reuters) -- Canadian troops fighting Taliban militants in Afghanistan have stumbled across an unexpected and potent enemy -- almost impenetrable forests of marijuana plants 10 feet tall.

General Rick Hillier, chief of the Canadian defense staff, said Thursday that Taliban fighters were using the forests as cover. In response, the crew of at least one armored car had camouflaged their vehicle with marijuana.

"The challenge is that marijuana plants absorb energy, heat very readily. It's very difficult to penetrate with thermal devices. ... And as a result you really have to be careful that the Taliban don't dodge in and out of those marijuana forests," he said in a speech in Ottawa, Canada.

"We tried burning them with white phosphorous -- it didn't work. We tried burning them with diesel -- it didn't work. The plants are so full of water right now ... that we simply couldn't burn them," he said.

Even successful incineration had its drawbacks.

"A couple of brown plants on the edges of some of those [forests] did catch on fire. But a section of soldiers that was downwind from that had some ill effects and decided that was probably not the right course of action," Hiller said dryly.

One soldier told him later: "Sir, three years ago before I joined the army, I never thought I'd say 'That damn marijuana'."

Northwestern Pakistan's fragile political peace has been shattered by two devastating attacks: a government missile strike that killed 82 people at an Islamic school in the Bajaur tribal district on Oct. 30, and a retaliatory suicide bombing Wednesday that killed 42 army recruits at a training camp in the Malakand tribal district.

"It's a nightmare to have an army being attacked on its own soil and by its own people." After the two incidents, he added, "the doors to peaceful negotiated settlements are closed. Well guess what V baby, it was controlled at one time by Alexander the Great. Want to know how? When he first went in there he tried (by the way like we "tried to control the Yugoslavian areas) with friendship. Didn't work he found the only effective way was to TOTALLY DESTROY EVERYTHING.

The reason Yugoslavia fell apart after Tito's death was that it had been ruled at the end of a T-34 tank barrel. Same in Afghanistan. If you rule with an iron fist it will work. If the Taliban takes an area. So sad, you're dead.

But our foriegn affairs are so busy trying to run the war like it is a business league. We want unidentified guerillas treated like uniformed soldiers, we want to show them how NICE AND TOUCHY FEELY WE CAN BE. They will laugh at us, and load up another airplane for the US.

So how do we deal with them? Do we just let another highrise go down...this time say, "Ay yup its from Afghanistan I guess they win."”

As for an army invading for just reasons...Ped you do need to check out some of the sites where soldiers are remarking about their missions. I have a large number of close friends going over and coming back. Without exception they #&%!$ that the media will not show what is really happening. I have one friend who talks about a battle in which the towelheads hit AbuGahrib....it was repulsed, no casulties...the Islamos got the crap kicked out of them. To him it was nothing. He and his fellow Marines had ONE..count em ONE reporter...but when the got back to the barracks they saw CNN..reporting this HORRIBLE disaster for the military.

The greatest problem we had in Vietnam started in Korea. It started with the Politicians running the war. That happened in Korea, Vietnam, and heck even the s-bg production called Desert One During the JIMUH reign. We are seeing a replay in Iraq and Afghanistan becuase Rumsfeld was trained by the creators of Vietnam.

You want to end Iraq and Afghansitan? Cut the Generals loose, like they did in the Gulf War. Let them bring the potential for every form of destruction allowable. LOL I remember in Savannah following the first Gulf War we had a reporterette who was sobbing over the destruction on the Road of Death where the airforce lliterally wiped out the Iraqi troops.

XL - I actually agree with you on one of your main points. If you need to fight a war, fight an all out war. Wars are bloody, messy and sometimes necessary. They are best fought with the maximum force you can bring to bear - with few restrictions on weapons and tactics. You get yourself into a nasty situation when you try to have a war and have the benefits of presenting a nice, friendly and diplomatic face... especially when that entails an occupation.

Personally, I would have preferred continued sanctions, UN inspections, and the no-fly zone. Second choice would have been get in, take Baghdad, arrest the folks you can catch and tell the rest of the Iraqi army you'll be back in a flash if there's a problem. Maybe even let some army council establish power having made a few promises, with the threat that you'll be back if they go too far astray.

The question now is what would be accomplished by escalating to a full scale war? Who is the enemy and who are you protecting in a country where a huge majority of the population thinks attacking you is a good thing?

Kosovo was not disastrous, because we weren't trying to pacify territory, we fought to clear out another occupying army... all we had to do was give the Kosvars enough air support to let them go to work.”

Our inspectors go to a palace or what not (where most of the stuff was stored) they deny access as they were supposed to allow..the inspectors thank them. Get in the choppers and leave. A couple of hours later the WHOLE facility disappears.

A few years ago I worked with a police department who had a very popular chief. My partner and I were detailed to take a summons to a house of a P.O.S.. I am talking if he was not Grand Wizard he was the right hand inbred. Two other officers had had problems in the past. The guy was jerko numero uno. So we asked the chief what we could do ..i.e. what happens if the guy threatens us. The Chief laughed and said, "If you are threatend, eliminate the threat, you know the law."

We pulled up at the house at around 7 PM Bubba is on his front porch. We walked up to the gate (my partner was black) and asked him to come to the gate. He told us to come on in. As we stepped in the gate he reached up and opened the screen door and let a huge Rotwiler out. The dog took about five bounds in our direction and my partner shot it dead. I mean it was like something out of the wild west. My partner reholstered his gun, looked at the guy and said, "Well we were here to serve a summons but you can go ahead and stand up and put your hands on the wall, you are under arrest."
The guy was so in shock he meekly complied.
The guy had been so used to officers running like hell to get away from the Rotwiler and seeing them embarrased he never thought this would happen.”
