"March is cool. I am not sure where I will be a commin from but, I am there. Martins creek is a good trail to do to see most. This meets up with the rough trail. Please keep me in the loop."

Are you serious?! I haven't met any TTers yet and this is in my neck of the woods. I've been meaning to get to the Gorge for a long time anyway.

I'd love to go but there's only one problem.

A group of local guys that I hike with all the time is hosting our annual first weekend in March trip. Get this, they want to go canoeing on the Current River in Missouri!!

I know, it's way to cold then to even worry about getting wet.

Maybe I could talk them into doing the Red River Gorge trip. Would that be imposing? There's usually only three or four of us.

Are they cool? Bring it on. The more the merrier. But you should probably watch for a reply from BBinkley since he's organizing.

Hey Dhutch, how long do you think the drive would be? Just curious as to if I should plan another vacation day.

5 1/2 hour drive
Smiley,
From my place Lexington is a 5 hour drive. I go every April for a big horse show. RRG appears to be about 40 minutes further?? It's no further than going many places up north. Depending on the itinerary of the trip we could leave Fri morning or Thurs after work. I've been looking into this area for quite a while. The trip promises to be well worth the drive.

The drive isn't bad...done before you know it and very nice scenery.

I'd like to get in on this one but would have to be sick to get outta work Friday night. Anyone mind a sick person coming along? ;) I've marked it on the calendar...will have to see what's going on closer to the departure date.

I'm in Lxington and the drive to the Red from my house is about 1hr. So, if you don't come into town, from I75 it is probably about 45 mins. I've hiked there nut no overnights yet.

What campsites are you looking at? The rules in the Red are "camp 100' from streams and 200' from trails" or vice versa. The creates a problem. The ridges and valleys are so steep and narrow that it seems like 100' from one and 200' from the other would always put one on a crazy slope.

Right now I am not set on any of them. I am open to suggestions. 100 feet is not far at all. That's 33 yards. That's not bad but of course I don't know the area either.
bbinkley

Yeah, I know. I was joking a little but a large group might actually have a problem. Most of my hikes in the Red are in the loops around trails 221, 223, 228. It's pretty nice in that section and Grays Arch is one of the "must see's in the Red.

Funny - Dhutch, I seem to recall you, at the xmas party, that you were talking about doing RRG in March.... for your BDay, was it?

I don't have any March trips planned. I just may be able to pull this off. :-)

i know a few places that a good sized group could stay. we're not talkin about more than 10 or 12 tents are we?
good thing about the gorge is if there are a lot of people, there are a lot of different hiking possibilities. you can hike lots of trails to get to the same place.
ductape

in particular, at the intersection of trail 221 and 223 there is a place to put an assload of tents.
in summer there was water running out of a rock face about a half mile from that spot, i don't know if it's there all the time or not though.
it would be a walk to a stream from there, i know. coming back up wouldn't be a whole lot of fun at the end of a long day.

Natural bridge SP is very close and a short day hike is well worth it,while in the area. 2cents.

When I hiked there, I stayed at a campsite in some campground and dayhiked the thing. It was good hiking, lots of nice river crossings, and Gray's Arc is very sweet.

If MM brings some of that whiskey, I may show up as well.

We stayed at campground 5, Koomer Ridge. Nice sites, and right by the trail head. One night, we packed into and camped on a ridge, I believe where rough ridge and the rough trail intersect. It was a sweet site!
