I am thinking about a roadtrip to Richmond Virginia to see a client of mine. I was thinking of doing a trip while I was up there. Any help? Any TT'ers live close to there?

I want to know too.
Just found out a company in Lynnchburg, VA is making some of my equipment, so a biz trip or two might be coming up.

bbinkley, we live in richmond. when you coming? there is some hiking in the immediate area, but you need to head for the blue ridge to get the good turf. what type of hike are you looking for? i may be able to go with you if you wanted.

stovestomper, if you go to lynchburg, you will have the AT right at hand.

I'm thinking of coming up there in the next couple of weeks. I will have an appointment in Richmond at S&K menswear on a friday and then would like to hike over the weekend. I'm open to suggestions. Be great for a few of us to get together.

the AT from the tye river up to the maupin field shelter and back via the mau-har trail is nice. this is a good loop if you wanted to head out friday evening. the hike to the harpers creek shelter area is pretty short and can be with a headlamp easy enough. if the moon is large, it could be done without a light now that the leaves are off the trees. there is also some camps right by the parking area if you didn't want to hike up to the shelter after dark. the next day, assuming you go up to the harpers creek shelter the first night, would be 6 miles, uphill for the majority, with a few great vistas. the way out on sunday is about 5 miles three of which follow a beautiful creek. this is a nice hike. here are some pictures from a trip running girl and i did a couple of years ago.

if you wanted shorter miles, there is a nice loop that goes up over cold mountain (a bald) that is about the same distance away.

hmmmmm.... the link didn't go directly to the album. it is the album labeled AT trip with a white trilium on the index page the link goes to.

Binks, that area Baume turned you onto is pretty sweet. Three Ridges Wulderness is really nice. His pictures are good but don't do it justice. From where the AT crosses the road you can go north into Three Ridges Wilderness or south into The Priest Wilderness. The Priest is taller by about 20 feet and is (I think)regarded as the highest elevation gain on the Virginia AT. Great views from three ridges. If you choose this area try to make time to drive up to the Crabtree Falls parking lot and do this hike. Beautiful falls. Of course you also have the Shenandoah NP too. Saint Marys Wilderness is nice, too.

Who's going to Lynchburg? Check out James River Face Wilderness.

You guys are making me homesick.

Peace. MM.

biggest problem right now for SNP and other trail heads to the south off of the Blue Ridge Parkway is that the Skyline Drive or BRPW is all too often closed due to ice (and/or bureaucracy making their jobs easier). The suggestions from baume are good because they don't rely on the ridge top roads. Another area I like is St. Mary's Wilderness Area which is possible to access from the bottom but I am less sure how good the FS road is leading to the trail head is. Ramsey's Draft is another good possibility but it is a bit farther from Richmond.
