stun gun, good or bad idea??View Messages“(and this post like Tarzan write)” 2:59:53 PM 1/30/07 “The pepper spray I got was supposed to be the best for strenght etc. I sprayed in on my finger and then licked my finger. Red sauce is hotter. Anyway, I found it on the floor one day all chewed up. Apparently the dog liked it. I don't carry pepper spray anymore :( Stun guns are illegal in Michigan but I sure love how effective they are when the cops use them on obnoxious drunks screaming obscenities in the E.D. Makes me love my job! :)” 3:00:07 PM 1/30/07 “Stun guns are for those who can't commit to a real gun. LOL!” 3:02:16 PM 1/30/07 “"STUN" guns are a pain compliance contact weapon, that means you are already wrastlin with the other person.. this is BAD, some are also not that effective.. I have jolted myself(75,000v), I was mildly amused. TASER would be the next best thing, It is the one that shoots out 2 darts with wires with a range of 15ft and sends a shaped electrical jolt that shorts your body and pretty much locks all your muscles up. THEY WORK! there is the X26c which is about $1000 it gives you the darts as well as a contact stungun as a quick backup and the NEW C2 which is smaller and lighter and just darts. I think will be priced around $300 from what I hear. X26c http://www.taser.com/self_defense/x26a.htm C2 http://www.taser.com/ctwo/index.htm Pepper spray is the next best option. dont bother trying to use bear spray for both, get one designed for humans, they are MUCH smaller and lighter anyways. Most work fine and also give you some small standoff ability. The hope is that you NEVER have to use them, but that you are prepared if the time ever comes. I carry a Glock 19 9mm. I want one of those Titanium or Scandium revolvers MUCH lighter.” 7:02:37 PM 1/30/07 “Thanks for the advice, son!” 7:08:30 PM 1/30/07 Naked Ape “Sorry Naked Ape, I just (now) saw your question from 1-10-03. I sometimes carry a derringer. This is a fairly small weapon with an over/under barrel. It fires a .410 regular shotgun round. This can also chamber & fire a .45 long colt (large old west round). Both kick in a small weapon. I've re-bored it to handle 3" .410 rounds. That’s like getting hit with (5) .38 cal rounds at once. (3" triple O buck) You can chamber both cylinders for .410 shotgun or .45 long colt or one of each. Slide bar safety & single action. http://www.bondarms.com/ifirearms.htm (I have the Texas Defender-trigger guards are removable) I don't quite agree using a stun gun depending on your personality. If somebody doesn't care to use a gun, I feel a stun gun is harder to use close-up. It's good for people that are used to getting aggressive, close & personal. Like police & bar bouncers. They quickly & easily disable without any real injury in most cases but recipients have died from its use. Pepper spray is a little different. Higher concentrations don’t mean it works better. Again it's a weapon & can carry similar police/court actions. People that use it are also used to its effects. I've been sprayed numerous times by numerous LEO instructors. I've been on the receiving end of chemical agent 'grenades'. It's not pleasant, but you can function. Bear spray is nice because it has a large volume & can spray for some distance. You will most likely feel its effects if used. If you're hiking, you'll carry the chemicals on your clothes & people will definitely avoid you then. If a bear is frightening you then I guess it's worth it. THe cylinder is large. For an assailant, I don't know. Would he be frightened off by seeing this fire extinguisher sized cylinder on your leg etc? Maybe you could bounce it off his head or maybe he/she would gain control of it first. My personal opinion would be a much smaller version of pepper spray that you could carry (hidden) in your hand, jacket pocket or some other readily accessible area. Be sneaky. Surprise on their part is always good. I'd steer away from the "spray". Most folks don't think about wind direction (prisons have wind socks in their yards)& if your assailant is close, it's going to splash back on you. I'd recommend a pepper spray in a foam or gel carrier. It's harder to find but worth the effort. -One, it's going to STICK to his face. The more you wipe, the worse it gets. -Two, the foam or gel will physically (temp) blind your assailant aside from the chemicals involved. Blackout his glasses that might shield him from spray. -Three, Gel or Foam shoots much, much further then sprays. Better to keep as much distance as you can. Helps keep you out of his grasp. Gives you more opportunity to retreat or the time to hit him with another burst. -Four, With Gel (my favorite) or foam there's less chance of the wind blowing it back in YOUR face. AS with any of these products, I would replace them periodically. If the propellant leaks out or the tip clogs, it won't do you much good. Just my personal opinion......... last edited: 1/30/07 8:47:54 PM” 8:45:26 PM 1/30/07 Here's a thought... “...don't go alone. If you can't find someone here to hike with, you don't really wanna go.” 8:31:07 PM 2/02/07 “Personally i dont like weapns, being them pure self defence or regular ones. First you have to be proficient in the use with them. Not only during training conditions but real live conditions as well. During an adrenaline rush (like if yiu are assailed) even a simple thing like getting the weapon out of its holster can be getting complicated. Second you must have the will to use the weapon. Not everyone can commit him/herself to willfully attack another person even in self defence. This is easier when you have a non lethal weapon but can still be kinda hard. Third every weapon you carry is a potential weapon that can be used against you. This is especially true for things like stun guns wher eyou have to be really upclose but even tazer can give you a false sense of security sinc emost tazer i know have only 1 set of darts to shoot out making it a 1 shot weapon. That said my recommendation would be getting into some decent hand to hand combat training and maybe some stick fighting training and get a sturdy walkig stick. Walking stick has the bonus (as been written earlier) that it is already there in your hands, is not questionable by local authorities and doesnt make an attacker more ruthless than an openly carried arm (if there is the danger of being shot wen s/he attacks, those attackers that will will hit quick and very hard before you get the chance to use your firearm).” 12:31:09 AM 2/03/07 “You should go to my myspace, (click on my name), go way back in time on my blogs and read what I have to say about carrying heat. Fengor, I think you would really appreciate it.” 1:56:08 AM 2/03/07
