i've never encountered a black fly problem on the OLP, and i doubt they'll be an issue at this time in april.

if they are, hike fast!

I can still make it on the new date. I don't think the black flies will be out that early and it should be a nice hike.

Looking forward to it jmitch and the date is actually better. The 19th is my b-day and I believe I'm being treated to a Colorado backpacking trip for the week.

A Colorado trip? Cool! Now that is a b'day present!

Psalm Sunday is always the Sunday before Easter. Just joking about not being able to make it that day.

I don't think I have your email Roach. Mine is bjj@fast.net

found this on the www
poem written by a little girl about big news in town/camp

FRANK FARRELL
I am a land that has seen trouble
and sorrow, many accidents occurred
I will sing to you the latest.
No doubt that you have heard
It was out in Sullivan County
and known to all throughout the land
is that famous lumbering town.

The robins were singing in the
merry month of May
Frank Farrell left his home so
happy and so gay, and little
thinking about the danger
in the forest, trees so tall and sound,
that swept away many a loving son
in that famous lumbering town.

It was on a Monday morning
he began his daily toil.
Little did his brother think, he
soon would lie beneath the soil,
parted from a loving father and
laid by his mother's mound,
never to hear those stately hemlocks
fall in that famous lumbering town.

The brothers a tree were cutting
and to the earth did fall.
It caught a limb of a maple,
Jerry, to his brother did call.
It shot down like an arrow,
and it crushed Frank to the ground
and killed, there by his brother's
side, in the famous lumbering town.

Now, Frank in his grave is sleeping
and the hemlocks creak and wave,
and little we know which one of
us will next go to the grave.
Whenever we visit this sun sweet
tree, that strove by Frank's mound
Who met his grave in Sweeny's
Camp, in that famous lumber town.

That was a good find, Limpy. Cutting trees down can be pretty hazardous, I guess.

Can I come? Is this going to be a death march? I am new to this site, actually have been lurking around here for a few months, came from the other side.
I am just getting back into backpacking this past year after a number of years off. I have been hiking alot in the Catskills, how is the terrain on the OLP compare?
Do you think that there will be snow there that time of year?
I have put myself in a a maybe on the trips site.

terrain more moderate than the catskills, cars can easily be placed to shorten the hike, should some people need to bail. highly unlikely that there will be snow then.

LtHiker, welcome back from the dark side, where those who aren't actually backpacking like to gather. :) (Or so I have heard.)

Hope you can make it.

Thanks for the info, it is 289 miles from my door step to South Williamsport according to expedia it will take 4 hours and 54 minutes. Bet I can shave that down some. If the boss(my wife) approves you can count me in, shouldn't be much of a problem.
The directions take me right through NYC and then out route 80 in PA if anyone needs a ride. I have a Jetta so I can take a couple with packs. you can send me an e-mail if you want rob@goodwinmarketing.net

I know the dates are for April 5th and 6th.
what if someone wanted to do just a day hike. Is it possible to meet everyone Sat morning? and if yes where?
when?

is there a hotel near by if treebeard and myself wanted to stay overnight?

(sorry still cant do overnights. I need to stick to day hikes. and even thats iffy)

There are roads all around that trail, but I don't know what condition they are in. You might want to look at hotels a little north of Williamsport, maybe it is highway 15?

There may be some on 15, but I know I saw a few motels when I was driving through Montoursville once. I think it's about 25 miles or so from the trail.
