Savage Gulf...the abortionView Messages“Forgot to say, great trip report! any pictures? kudos for getting out there an doiing it. When I said, "You're all nuts, lol! Camping in this freakin' cold! I went for a hike today and it was one degree! No grief from me, I'dve gone home too." twigeater 05:25:35 PM 01/12/03" I meant that if you had pitched your tent in Maine this weekend it was -10 to -20 at night without the windchill factor. More power to ya if you stay out in that. I'm sure you'd be toasty once in your bag, but what about time spent pitching your tent and cooking. My hike was great, I love winter and it is beautiful out there! We had a couple of minor issues with the cold that we were prepared for, but other than that we weren't cold. First winter hike I've done where I didn't sweat buckets while only wearing one shirt.” 6:41:10 AM 1/13/03 “Alrighty then, paddler, the foam pad is out. Searcher, the LE is in. Full length??? The Backpacker is quite large enough for me. I'm not as tall as you, remember??? HOI, I smacked it against a tree and broke the ice up. The bag seems no worse for wear. Jerbear, I think Ray Jardine is some fruitcake who likes to run through the woods wearing nothing but Jap flaps and a painter's cap, eatin' nuts and berries.” 7:52:42 AM 1/13/03 “wow...in-ter-est-ing title! 16 degrees is freakin' cold, man. i wouldn't have even tried it...i'm intending to be a total baby until at least March.” 7:54:31 AM 1/13/03 “I sleep really warm, lyra. Had I been in a tent, I wouldn't have zipped my sleeping bag closed past the waist and I would have been wearing only a pair of running shorts. But that hammock is so damn comfy...” 7:58:30 AM 1/13/03 “you're lucky! i'm cold just thinking about it.” 8:03:26 AM 1/13/03 “Cold good! My water froze first time out winter camping as well FG. What I do now is boil water in Nalgene bottle, and any remaining water I put under my bag, or wrap it in fleece in my tent. It still gets somewhat icy, but if you boil some wtare in the morn and pour it in the icy containers, it works well. It was 18 degrees in MI this weekend, our water stayed warm in the heated schoolhouse lol!” 8:04:58 AM 1/13/03 “FG- Ray painter! LOL WHATS this brasslite solo stove all about????” 8:14:02 AM 1/13/03 “Yeah, BB, winter is the preferred season for hiking in the South because the summers here are so friggin' insufferable. I'm gonna remember the heated Nalgene thing... ...so, was there a schoolmarm in the ol' schoolhouse???” 8:14:30 AM 1/13/03 “brasslite solo?” 8:17:31 AM 1/13/03 “Jerbear, the Solo has been discontinued. I received the Duo from Aaron. Check out the reviews at Sgt. Rock's site and check out www.brasslite.com This stove kicks all forms of @ss!!!” 8:20:59 AM 1/13/03 “Thanks!” 8:37:49 AM 1/13/03 “that is chilly, nice to know us yankees aren't the only ones freezing.” 8:43:45 AM 1/13/03 “You losers need to buy and read my books. Then, spend all your spare time making your stoves out of discarded soft drink cans. That way I can get rich and buy expensive gear. You got a problem with Jap Flaps? Oh yes, I wear a watch too.” 8:44:00 AM 1/13/03 “i'm intrtigued.....that stove looks cool...er uhmmm....warm........but how do you pressurize the fuel with no nobs or pumps?” 8:45:06 AM 1/13/03 “well what time is it?” 10:23:21 AM 1/13/03 “Father Goose - Full length LE. Works great. After hearing your tale of woe..I am questioning the lower limits of my hammocks comfort. Supposed to go out this weekend, but the weatherman is speaking in the TEENS and I don't do the ground sleeping thing well. (Or the frostbitten $ss for that matter.) Soooooo....” 10:45:45 AM 1/13/03 “Yo Bear!” 11:13:07 AM 1/13/03 “Good show boyz. You learned something and to me, that's a major element of backpacking -- what works and what doesn't. FG: About the stove. Looks cool and so lightweight. How burly is it at that low a weight? Do you have to be careful with it? Is it basically a a brass soda can? Can you drop it from 3-4 feet on some rocks and not kill it? It's kinda spendy... Just curious. Thanks.” 11:45:42 AM 1/13/03 “Alrighty then, fellers. The stove will withstand a static load of 20lbs. per the website. It pressurizes by heat (kinda like my old Optimus white gas stove) generated from a little fuel poured on the priming pan. Because it does operate on a pressure principle, it is much sturdier than a soda can stove. It burns a lot longer, too. LOOK AT THE FRIGGIN' WEBSITE!!!” 12:07:59 PM 1/13/03 “Well I can buy the large triangia stove only at bennets for 5 bucks. I make a mean pop can ctove and will come darn close to the boil time and fuel cosumption. Never thought someone would market them let alone an insurance company insure them??? Richb make a fancy dancy stove also.Lets hear it Rich! Hi BB! Shhh Ray Jardine!” 12:33:40 PM 1/13/03 “Thas what I'm saying Jerber! $65???? I think I'll just suck up the extra weight and stick with the tried, the true, the original, TRANGIA!” 1:43:14 PM 1/13/03 “Yo Bear! The Trangia doesn't even come close but, if your soda can stove works for you, stick with it. A soda can stove is better than a Trangia. The Brasslite is sturdy, efficient and will last for years but, as Rosey pointed out, you can make a lot of soda can stoves for the price of the Brasslite. I prefer not to bother.” 1:52:15 PM 1/13/03 “$65 - Ouch!” 2:35:03 PM 1/13/03 “FYI-Aaron gives you step-by-step instructions on how to make one of his stoves if anyone's interested...” 4:13:46 PM 1/13/03 “heck you could email the tincanstoveman and get a one for free (other than postage). I did notice that he had posted on the other site a few days ago” 4:16:54 PM 1/13/03
