Very cold and a lost dog.
At 9:30 pm Chicago time I was waiting at the Hickory Ridge Trailhead for Ductape to pull up with the idea of doing some great night hiking. He showed up and so did someone else. The people that showed up were looking for a lost hiker that had been missing since 1 pm that day.It was a very cold night at least 12 deg's out and there was a great moon in the clear night sky.The light that the moon was casting throught the trees looked very cool.We found the first campsite and I got a fire going. We sat around the fire talking about hiking and TrailTalk.Sometime around 10 pm a little dog showed up in our camp and was not looking too good.Well the little dog stuck around and did not get along too will with Ductapes dog so it slept outside.Later on during the night I heard a Great Horned Owl and it was such a nice treat to hear that and soon after that I fell asleep.

Today we hit the trail around 9:30 am Chicago time and I took us to the Terrill Ridge Cemetary it was a nice day and we did about 10 miles of hiking.

Ductape is a very cool dude and I can't wait to hike with him again.

Sounds like a cool trip, Crazy Mike! Hope that little dog ended up doing okay. Poor puppy.

Owls are very cool to hear at night, haven't heard one in a while.

Crazy Mike Backpacks - How were you able to identify the Great Horned Owl? What sounds did it make?

You can hear some of their sounds at the above link. "Great Horned Owls have a large repertoire of sounds, ranging from deep booming hoots to shrill shrieks."

I once heard two of them hunting together, trying to scare out prey between them. One finally got a rabbit right outside of my tent.

Did the owl get the dog? "A Great Horned Owl may take prey 2 to 3 times heavier than itself."
