bwood, I have been to Big Bend about a dozen times,,however that is a little far for a weekend. I am wanting to go to Palo Duro Canyon, but that is about as close to Memphis as it is to you.

Texwoodswoman is near Waco and should be able to give you information on the hill country.

Where is beautiful river and the dinosaur tracks?

My guess is that it is the Paluxy River and that the tracks are in Dinosaur Valley State Park.

For more tracks there is San Angelo State Park with the O.C. FISHER LAKE on the North Concho River.

Sam Houston National Park
This is where I hiked last weekend. We hiked for 3 days, and did not make it down even half of the trails. If you are interested in the area let me know and I will see about getting you info.

Lake Mineral Wells state park. LBJ National Grassland (not really that grassy or flat). Enchanted Rock state park. McGee Creek recreation area in OK. Wichita Mountains wildlife refuge in OK.

I live outside Ft. Worth and I go to the White Mountain Wilderness near Ruidoso, NM on 3-day weekends (9-10 hr drive) because there's just nothing in Texas that compares to the Rocky Mountains!

Thanks, Chili!!
Hey bwood, it's me Tex.

Yeah, I've been around Texas a bit and all those places that have been mentioned are pretty good. I've just recently discovered the Lone Star Trail (check it out on their website) which is just north Houston and some is in Sam Houston SP.

I'd also recommend several others like Caprock Canyons, Lost Maples SP, Inks SP, Lake Texoma (which is right north of the DFW area) and absolutely Guadalupe National Park (Nat'l Park not SP), Pedernales and Colorado SP.

I guess I don't have to tell you to avoid those place is July and August - Spring is best time, say around late April, Early May or in October or November.

If you ever want company, drop me an email at lapb24@yahoo.com

Giving serious thought to Enchanted Rock or Sam Houston for my next two-nighter. BigRob or woodswoman we will definitely have to get together some time.

Enchanted Rock
I went to Enchanted Rock on Dec. 27th and 28th. We found a nice camp spot away from from all the sight seers. The rock is cool.

hiyaz texy!
you know why i'm crazy? cuz i was born in TEXAS! kingsville to be exact. last year ....make that 2 years ago..at this time i was in south texas hog huntin on a 35,000 acre cattle ranch. it was awesome! great weather, tons of wildlife, millions of birds. there were the redest cardinals in the world and these green parrots, about 10 inches long. i got a shot at a 450 lb'er but lucky for him i'm half blind. doin fine here next to my wallmount electric heater. i've had enough cold for while! good to see ya!
