Yeah - I was eager and all on this thread early on but I haven't moved an inch (or pound) - I better put this Boston Cream Pie away.

I am pondering joining a new weight watchers group at work - they meet every Wednesday at lunch.

I lost 7lb eating basically junk food when I hiked the NP Trail! Of course I also hiked 122 miles in 9 days in the Adirondacks.

Down by almost 20.
Those who have met me are now thinking "What the hell could he possibly have lost?!?!?" I was never fat but the bulge was beginning to start.

I am beginning to see a minor increase in muscle tone and definition. Strength has definately increased as has endurance.

Way to go, Now! I'm holding steady at my target of around 153-155. Went to my 20-year college reunion last weekend and everyone was talking about their few extra pounds (most looked just fine, actually). I was the only one reporting I was actually less than my college weight of around 160. And I'm in much better shape overall, too.

Congrats to you all.

I finally got on the ball and dropped the first 10 lbs of the 30 or so that need to come off.

The holidays are always a challenging time for dieters. Deprivation creates craving etc. Goodluck to all who are on "lifestyle changes" over the next 70 days.

hey has anybody tried the No Carbs diet? Is that even healthy?

I know a number of people who have tried that yam. I CANNOT believe it is healthy. Check out the Zone. Low Carb but a change in Carbs. The logic behind a balanced diet makes much more sense to me. www.zoneperfect.com for more info.

I lost 15 pounds on no carbs and then went to a low carb diet to maintain. I have not felt as healthy in years.

No it isnt
But, it seems like the Atkins style diet works well with men. However, I heard that doctors are re-thinking it.

I turned to a diet doctor. I have had great success. So far have lost about 41 lbs now.

I intend to lose weight,,,,,,,,have been so good since the middle of Sept. I wont stop till I get down to 115 lbs.

Personally, the low carb diet made me sick to my stomach. There is way too much fat. On my diet, I actually only get 3 oz of protein a day, unless it is fish or seafood then you can have double the amount. I also have 2 glasses of fat free milk a day. I have 4 fruits, some fresh veggies, and 1/2 cup cooked veggies a day, and 5 servings of carbs a day (like 1/3 cup rice, or 1/2 cup pasta, or a 70 calorie piece of bread. I also am allowed 3 fats a day, which is 6 dry roasted non-salted almonds, 1/8 avacado, or 1 tsp. olive oil.

Yam, what in the world are you doing asking about diets?????

You are perfect just the way you are.

You can't be asking for yourself yam, you're so tiny!

My boss did zero carbs and lost about 50lbs in 3 months. He had problems with vertigo, to the point where he darn near totalled his car and had to call his wife to come get him. He's ok now.

Another guy in my office is on Atkins, but he yo-yos. He follows Atkins all the time except for like on Thanksgiving when he is a glutton and gains about 8lbs. The stuff he eats for lunch every day would make me sick.

I don't believe any diet that concentrates on one thing is healthy.

I am actually asking because a co-worker of mine is going to try it. I was concerned because an aunt of mine was on it for several months, and then when she tried to eat carbs again, she'd get sick. I was wondering if that was a normal reaction or if that was a rare instance?

by twiggy's statement, it appears that No Carbs can mess you up in different ways.
yam

Different people may be affected in different ways or not at all. Creek Dancer tried it and had problems with it.

As far as I can tell, I'm not messed up. I may be a mess, but that was not the Atkins diet that did it.

I don't know if this has been mentioned or not since I haven't looked through the entire thread, but the Subway diet works. You are supposed to eat a six inch veggie for lunch and a footlong 6-grams of fat or less sub on white, wheat, or honey oat bread with no cheese and no mayo for dinner. However, that wasn't enough food for me and I hate eating just veggie subs. So I ate two footlong subs a day that were 6-grams of fat or less (ham, turkey, roast beef, chicken, etc) with no-fat sauces (vinegrette, sweet onion, honey mustard) and all the veggies I could pile on. For breakfast I'd eat a piece of fruit and I drank nothing but water. $300 and one month later I lost 17lbs. It really worked but was way too expensive. After college if when I have some more money I intend on trying the plan again.

For the last two months I've been lifting weights five days a week. This has caused me to gain 7 lbs and lose one inch around my waste. I plan on adding 30 mins of cardio to my exercise plan each day which should help a lot. I really want to be healthier...plus a stronger, lighter person can backpack further, easier.

A friend went on Atkins and when we said it was unhealthy, she said she didn't care as she was finally loosing weight. Just so happened she was in nursing school and something she learned there made her do an extreme about face - she said it was very bad for you, but I don't know exactly why.

I have heard about people having gall bladder problems - I guess too much protein causes gall stones(?) And carbs are essential for proper brain function, that's why we thought the zero carbs caused my boss's vertigo.

Of course, it's not healthy to be overweight either, but...

Body for Life
The best diet/exercise plan I've ever seen. I did it for about 3 months a couple of years ago and lost about 20 pounds. My old boss and her husband did it and lost the weight they wanted to.

It's pretty simple - old fashioned eat healthy and exercise. THe plan cuts fat out pretty much completely, but allows carbs in limited portions. THe key is the exercise.

Geo--
so there was never any side effects to you? That's good. I hate when I just hear the negative stuff!

That subway diet--I say just make sandwiches yourself and bring them for lunch!! But bah!! How boring!

I tried Atkins last Jan. Lost 11 lbs the first week but only 5 during the next 2 mos. I had to get off it because my energy level was zilch and everyday was like foggy and stuff.

One week ago I started up my weight loss agenda using conventional methods. Eat moderately (1200 cal), 1 hour run in the morn, 1 hour walk/hike in the evening. Already lost 7 lbs in 7 days. I'm going for a lb/day till Winterfest and I think I'll do it. Last year I couldn't fit my 0 degree bag around my shoulders. Damn if that's going to happen again!

Two years ago I did this same routine and lost 34 lbs in 29 days. And a total of 70 in 90 days. This time I will not lift weights as I tend to bulk up really quickly.

Yam, this was my idea as well...make sandwiches myself. However, they just don't taste as good. Subway has better bread and wider variety...you dont' have to cut up your vegetables yourself, and their sauces are fat free. I do eat a lot of homemade ham and turkey sandwhiches now but they just aren't the same. Plus a homemade sweet-onion chicken teriayke(sp) sandwhich makes a mess on sandwhich bread.

Oh yeah, lots of good exercise too.

Look at the protein power diet. You severely cut back on carbs for 2-3 weeks & then slowly reintroduce them into your diet. The 1st 4-7 days can be hell as your body wants to know where all the sugar went to but it will pass. The biggest thing I noticed was how much better my joints started feeling even before I lost any weight. You still must exercise 3-4 days/week or no diet will do any good.

Still holding steady at 20 pounds below my highest ever weight of a year ago. RE: the "no-carb" "no-fat" "no-whatever" diets, it seems to me that moderation is the key, not eliminating things all together. I didn't eliminate anything - just reduced things across the board. Plus, I started a consistent weightlifting routine to add to my running. Man, I'm looking gooooood, now! Well, feeling good, anyway....

Nah, MCMB, they sent the jar o' flesh to the lab. I'm paying the price for years of running outdoors with exposed skin and no sunscreen. I will continue to have these little things, but it's only about as serious as a big pimple (this kind of cancer doesn't metastasize (sp?)).

So what about South Beach? It's one where you pretty much cut out carbs and fruits the first two weeks, then wean them back in. I got the book. It was set up by a dr., who says it was really designed to get a person's veins in good shape. Cut down bad cholesterol, increase good.

At least reading it, it sounds good. I'm not done with it yet. Haven't started it yet. Hell, I have all the stuff you're not supposed to eat and what am I to do????!? Toss it?!?!? I think not. LOL

I've been on Weight Watchers for the last year and have lost 62 lbs. The weight loss has been gradual. I think the best way to lose weight and keep it off is to totally change one's lifestyle. Just my two cents.
