WSJ has in article in today's Personal Journal section with a chart comparing different "fast foods".

The gist of the article is that you can't always tell the relative caloric content of what you are eating by its name.

EG:

Fresh City Chicken Teriyaki Wrap --968 cal. 33 grms fat

Baja Feesh Ensalada Chikcen 857 calories 57 gram fat

Au Bon Pain Chicken Caesar (OH OH!!!! MY FAVORITE!!) 640 calories 26 grams fat

Panera Smoked ham and Swiss 630 cal/49grm fat

McDonald's Chicken Flatbread 470 cal/17 gram fat

Panera Veggie on Multigrain 470 cal/12 grm fat

Panera Classic Cafe Slad 400 cal/36 grm fat

McDonald Chef sald w/ranch 320/26

The Au bon Pain Chicken Caeasra DIES in the DRESSING. That is where the fat and calories are loaded in.

Pretty scary . . .in some preparations the BALSAMIC VINAGRETTE has MORE calories than the freaking Ranch dressing. Who'd a thunk.

THe bottom line was, if you don't prepare it yourself, you can't tell how many calories it has.

On that note . . . I had two helpings of pasta with red sauce last night, a huge salad with balsamic vinegar, extra virgin olive oil, sunflower seeds, dried craberries, .crumbled blue cheese, carrots, red peppers and lettuce and two glasses of chianti for dinner.

This morning . . .a bagel with a light coating of cream cheese and for lunch

a tuna salad sandwich with a bag o barbeque chips

I got nowhere to go but UP from here (in weight that is!!!!!)

Tonight dinner is leftover roast chicken dinner with mash potatoes, stuffing and a veggie . . .white wine of course

oink oink oink.

YUM, lee!

the last time i lost a lot of weight, it was summer time and i had no AC, so i didn't really feel like eating much anyway (hot and sticky and gross); i was taking a PE class for college, which consisted of going to the gym for like 6 hours a week; and i was so madly in love with a man i couldn't have that i felt like puking all the time (NO, i didn't, i just felt like it). i'm 5'6", and weigh about 115 normally, so i might have looked sort of icky!

LOL! so try that for a weight-loss plan.

Interesting diet lyra; "The Angst-Riddled College Coed Diet". 5'6", 115lbs is pretty lean and mean! If you'd drop another 15 you could be a Supermodel!

I like the "I Love the Flu Diet" personally! Nothing like a week of tea and soup to shed a few pounds.

Funny, aero, I was thinking about that on Sunday, after a night of Cameron puking his guts out with a stomach virus. I thought, hmmmm, maybe wouldn't be a total disaster if I caught this one.... Not!

OK, people, chime in with your lunch menu. I ate a small piece of salmon (about 2"x2"x3/4"), about 2/3 cup of cous-cous, carrots, celery, a banana, and a yogurt, with a Diet Pepsi to drink. In the past, I would have eaten a much larger piece of salmon, but I divided it in two so I can have a piece tomorrow, too. No snacks so far today (another juicy pear with my name on it is sitting in my fruit basket on my desk). No garlic butter so far today (hee hee).

Will walk and jog 4 miles to the car dealership this afternoon to pick up the car (30,000 mile service).

My wife used the "Mononucleosis Diet" just prior to our wedding. It worked great! Amazing what 2-3 weeks of nothing but sleeping and not eating will do for weight loss. I think she weighed about 110 when we got married.

I buy into that "set point" theory where your body adjusts to a certain weight and you can change it over time through exercise and making changes to your metabolism.

Oh yah . . .with the tuna salad lettuce and tomatoe sandwich and bag o Lyas bbq chips, I had a choco chip cookie and a couple of glasses of water.

About the only vice I do not have is in my regular beverage choice. I drink water. The only time I have soda is on a long drive on a warm sunny afternoon when I am afeered that I will fall asleep and run head-on into a bus full of nuns.

Morning beverage is a tall glass of 1/2 OJ 1/2 Cranberry and a 16 oz coffee with a little little bit of half and half (no sugar).

Oh . .. .Ya'll be very pleased that INSTEAD of WORKING OUT right this very instant . . . I am online chattin' wid you folks!!!!!!!!

good trick, lee. LOL!

today i could do a half-hour on the elliptical machine, because it didn't have the arm-moving thingies (you just rest your hands on a bar). maybe that's not still called an elliptical machine, i have no clue. but yesterday when i tried to use the kind WITH the arm thingies, it killed!! i could only do 15 minutes. and then when i got off, i felt like i was floating, instead of walking...i love when that happens! yummmmm.
lyra

i kinda hate the arm things on those machines, so i generally don't use them.

i think there is a difference in machines, too. there are some "cross-trainers" at the gym which i can't stand, then there are some "elliptical" machines. the motion is a little different, but enough to make a difference to me. i think the cross-trainers are more just back and forth, like you're skiing, and the elliptical machines are, well, elliptical.

I'm hoping to drop 15 pounds.

The best weight loss program I ever had was this: donuts and coffee in the morning, baked potatoes, kielbasa or pizza and Dr. Pepper (regular) for lunch and dinner. I lost over 20 pounds in a month. It probably had something to do with going broke buying a house and working 75 hours+ a week renovating it (while being on call 11pm - 7AM four nights a week for psych. consultations at an emergency room).

It's also how I ended up with a beard. I was doing nothing but working on the house, eating and sleeping - and the ER had been quiet for a long stretch. Then, I was working well into the night painting on primer/sealer when I got called in to the hospital. By the time I cleaned up the fresh drips, and soaked my roller, brushes and tray, I scarcely had time to shower and dress before heading into work. When I looked in a mirror - I already had a beard, so I kept it that way.

After that, I had a plan for a weight loss retreat in the Maine woods. I'd have my customers build the darn thing. I'd work them to the bone - let them eat whatever they wanted, but not for more than 15 minutes a meal, and charge them for the experience.

ductape, I know what ya mean about staying disciplined....about eating anyway. I find myself thinking sometimes it doesn't seem like I'm eating enough to stay alive, but also think, if I really want to lose some weight I have to stick to it. I don't really have that much to lose and stay there, maybe that's why its so hard to reach my goal. BTW the hardest area is the abs and upper body area(go figure)Probably another 10-15lbs should do it, anymore, then I'd be too skinny.

What's your thought's on eating then exercising or vice versa? I've heard different things about that....ie, you should wait an hour after you eat before you exercise, you shouldn't exercise too close to bedtime, etc. Anyway the time UK and I go I think is the perfect time, right after work about 4:00pm until about 6:00pm, just before the 5:00pm rush... Unfortunately UK may have to go a little later cause of his job. We were trying to figure out how to work this out. Any ideas?

Hey guys!

I just checked out this thread. I've been on a little bit of a kick lately. I have no weight loss goals. I've just decided to work out 30-40 minutes per day with some idea of ratcheting it up once I feel comfortable. I've kept at it for two weeks now.

I've also tried to cut out the fast food. I've found that thinking about it in economic terms has helped me. I just think about the money saved by not eating out.

I'm optimistic that some of this pattern changing will stick. Everything else in my life is going well now.

Currently I'm using a treadmill, rowing machine, stepper and stationary bike. I like going hard at each for ten minutes and then shifting to another. I may add another device or two.

My payoff is the really good feeling I get after I'm done. That's my only goal. And it happens every day.

TMI, WingDing! Actually, you can lose a lot of weight by eating that fake candy. J/K!!

My best weight loss was after 30 days of freeze dried food on the JMT. But I blew it by over eating after we got out. I craved fatty foods. No self control. Bad, bad, bad...

Self-control is very difficult. I gained 15 lbs in a little over a year just because I couldn't stop myself from snacking on cookies and candy. Well, I weighed in at after working out tonight. I lost 2 lbs this past week. Hopefully, it wasn't just because the candy fake candy ran through me.

skeetah
i just exercise when i can. i couldn't see working out right before bed as worse than not working out.
to develop a "by the book" exercise program would require more hours than are in my day.
but i do eat dinner before exercising, and i sometimes get a protein shake or something when i get done. it's true what they say about carbs and protein after exercise, a little of each will get ya re-upped faster. helps a little with next day soreness, too, for me, i think. that could be all in my head, though.
my diet probably isn't all that it should be. i watch my protein and carbs and make up for the rest with vitamins. i eat fruit as snacks but don't touch vegetables unless it's potatos or corn, and even then not very often.
lots of tuna fish and chicken. lots of rice too. and steak.

What, Nowslimmer, you don't think that I behave like a nine year old? Wait until I get those snowshoes, and start floundering in the snow, laughing hysterically.

I got this cookbook from The Mail Order Catalog called "I can't believe it's not meat" and I tried the recipe for Spanish Rice, last night. It was great, with Textured Response Flakes, rice, tomatoes, green chilis, onion, garlic and chili powder. My husband had seconds, which is okay, since I handed out small portions and it isn't very high calorie. The Tvp made from soy concentrate really is easier to digest than the ordinary kind, so it is another item to add to a healthy lowfat diet (and it is pretty inexpensive).

I've found you have to watch out for fat in vegetarian recipes. Last year Birch and I started eatting much less meat, I bought several cookbooks to help with meal ideas, and balanced meals. I found about seventy percent of the recipes are LOADED with fat.

We really try to stick to the 30% or less rule. So, there are alot of recipes that I think look incredible, but won't ever get tried.

I won't buy a cook book unless it has nutritional info under the recipes anymore.

I highly recommend "The Almost No Fat cookbook available at the Mail Order catalog. Every recipe has nutritional info and the book has entirely vegan recipes that are very good with minimal fat. With recipes like this you'll be on a diet and not know it. No animal fats or dairy products to clog veins and add weight.
