didn't read all of the posts, but I neeed to lose about 5 to 10 pounds myself, so my new years resolutions will be "go on a diet"
I know you now can buy some metabolism test stripe. I think there about 10 in a pack and they cost around 14 dollars (I know that's alot), but it will tell you when you do burn the most fat. Thought that was pretty interesting to get you started. After a while you will know yourself when you are burning the most. I am not going after a specific diet plan, just don't eat much, cut out all (most) the fat and no sweets. I did notice that every time I go hiking I have about 2 to 3 pounds more, and I don't eat that much. I wonder why that is.

Good Luck to everyone!

Here's something that might be of interest for women. It's taken from the book "Fight Fat after Forty" by Pamela Peeke M.D.

"Good health isn't just what you weigh-it's where you weigh it. The more weight you carry around your mid section, the greater your risk for breast cancer, heart disease, or diabetes. A woman's waist-to-hip ratio should be 0.7 or below, with a waist circumference of less than 35 inches. To find your ratio, wrap a tape measure around your middle and record the number. Then wrap it around the widest part of your bottom and record that number. divide the first number by the second number for your ratio.
She also recommends walking 4 miles per day, but it doesn't have to be all at once, even walking around the house cleaning or whatever or to the store counts, anything that moves your body. She recommends wearing a pedometer to find out how much you are moving per day.

The Spanish Rice recipe (I also added 1/2 can of fiesta corn and black olives) has only three tablespoons of olive oil, no other fat until I added the black olives. This is for a recipe that makes six servings. It took up most of a very large frying pan, so it made a lot of food, and only had one cup of cooked rice in it. I liked it because you can use fresh veggies if you have them or add canned ones. I have found that if a recipe doesn't have dairy products and meat, then it doesn't have a lot of fat in it. The exception is when there are a lot of nuts used.

If you can afford it, a personal trainer is a good way to jump start your way into exercise/health mode. At $90 or more a month, they are pricey, but you are going to spend that much screwing around trying to do it solo anyway. A lot of women I know have used this approach successfully (including myself and my Mom). Once you get down to 10-15 lbs within your goal you can fire your trainer and do it alone.

Use lowfat alternatives!
So, I made two meatloafs, a lowfat turkey meatloaf and a regular lean beef meatloaf. The regular one is only slightly more delicious. But the turkey one is not bad.

Where are the treats?
Since this started Sunday night, how many of you have hidden any treats from anyone of your family?

This includes in your pocket, under the newspaper or a magazine, in a closet, the trunk of a car, high on a shelve, and so on.
-------------------------------
I am not perfect. Last night on the way to a workout and two hours of aikijutsu, I stopped for gas and bought a large Hersey bar. It was only 6 blocks to the Health Club and I did not quite finish the chocolate. I put a big hunk in my mouth, wrapped the small amount that remained and left it in the car. This morning I did another workout (always followed by a steam bath) and weighted-in at 203, down from 209 on Monday. Hey, wait a minute. I forgot about the Hersey. «« puts on shoes and goes out to the car »» Munch, munch, yummmm. The Hersey was still in the car. The Florida sun melted it and I had to eat it with a spoon, but is now safely out of sight. Please note, you can Simonize your baby with a Hersey's candy bar.

In 4 days (M-Th) I've had 3 workouts and 4 hours of aikijutsu classes. I have arrested my weight gaining, I'm down 6 and feel better and a little more secure about my future. The day is not over and I'm returning for another workout this evening.

While I'm gone, how are you doing? Are you sticking to your program or have you dropped by the wayside already. One can recover from a setback. And no one said that this was going to be easy. Please post your report below, be it good or bad. There is plenty of room for it. I will read it. Thanks.

I weighed in at 169 this morning, 1 pound less than where I started the week, but I won't count it unless it stays at 169 for another day or two. I have not eaten a single "treat" all week (so far). I have only had my daily afternoon pear - YUM! I have a school-related meeting tonight, where dinner is provided. Fortunately, they always bring delicious, but low fat and nutritious food!

went to the bank tonight, put my check in and found out i don't have as much money as i thought. actually i think it's a mistake, i'll have to check on that tomorrow. i spent 20 minutes looking for a pen to fill out my stuff(bank was closed, i was at the atm) then found out about the missing funds.
got pulled over for speeding(no ticket, though) on the way to the haircutter's, which closed early bc of the snow tonight. i was not having a good night.
sooo, i went and got a milkshake and a movie and went to a friend's house instead of the gym.
im so bad, but i was so frustrated at that point i think it was the best thing to do.
i have a soccer game tomorrow night then i'm going night skiing so i think i can make up for it.
boy, was that milkshake good.

I have been so busy this week that we ended up going out to dinner and I split a hamburger and fries with my daughter (at a restaurant not fast food). Not one of my healthier meals. I haven't been on the scale so I don't know, but I did work out last night. I need to find some time to cut up some vegetables today.

I've already hit my goal of getting to the gym 3x a week, and I'm headed there again after work today. I've already learned that the aerobic portion of my workout bores me to tears, but I love lifting weights. Going to do 20 min. on two different machines tonight, to switch it up a bit.

One thing that I have not committed to is eating differently. I know I should, not just from a weight loss standpoint, but for overall health. I'm just not ready to give up that stuff yet.

I am not a snacker at all (see Nowslimmers post above) so that is nt a problem.

It is only the portion thing.

I am pleased to say that . . .my portions only seem to have gotten LARGER!!!!!!

Just thinking about portions has caused me to think about eating. which has caused me to pout more on my plate.

I think i need to stop thinking.

I have also decided to only weigh myself directly after a 4 mile run.

That way I can take credit for the 2-3 pounds of water weight that comes off!!

I decided this after weighing myself Wed after my run and being down 3 lbs, and then yesterday, after lifting and being down only 1b (both relative to my starting point, meaning I had gained back 2 lbs).

This weekend we are headed to my parents for a delayed Xmas gathering, so I probably won't eat too much there!!!!

So, if you drink 64 oz. of water a day (8 - 8 oz glasses), does your body start absorbing it better after several days, or do you just continue to pee it out all the time? I sure get a lot of extra exercise walking to the bathroom a million times a day....

Smiley - I have found that my weightlifting is almost an aerobic exercise. I tend toward lighter weights and more and faster reps, then, instead of sitting/standing around waiting to do another set, I switch to a different machine that works different muscles. The other people at the gym look at me a little funny as I zip from machine to machine, but after about 10-15 minutes, my heart rate is up, I'm breathing heavier, etc.

Gym day for me today - will do the "arm bike" and the other upper body stuff. I'm laying off the leg exercises for a few days, as my hip has been a little sore. BTW, weighed in at 168.5 this morning, so I may be able to claim a legitimate loss of a pound (or more!).

EATING WELL
Pass the Nuts, Pass Up the Guilt
By MARIAN BURROS

FTER you've been told for years that fatty foods like nuts are bad, it's pretty hard to switch gears and start eating them because — surprise! — now they're good.

As pasta and baguettes, stars of low-fat diets, fall out of favor, nuts are taking center stage. The new mantra is, Mono- and polyunsaturated fats are good; simple carbohydrates are bad.

When I first tried eating nuts instead of bread to take the edge off my appetite, I had the usual pangs of guilt. But I soon warmed to the task. I love nuts, especially cashews and pistachios, let alone peanuts, which aren't really nuts but legumes. And I'm pretty fond of pecans, almonds and walnuts, when they are toasted.

Nuts are amazingly filling. One day last week I had some cashews before lunch. When I finally had lunch, I ate less than half the usual amount.

"We can dispel the myth that eating nuts makes you fat," said Dr. Joan Sabaté, chairman of the nutrition department at the Loma Linda University school of public health in California. "Those that eat nuts tend to be thinner."

Preliminary evidence suggests that even though nuts are high in fat and calories, they help people lose weight and keep it off. They also help people stick to diets better than fat-free foods that are high in carbohydrates but have no fiber. The reason is that they provide a feeling of satiety.

The usual caveat applies, of course: the calories from nuts have to replace other calories — you can't just add them on and expect to lose weight.

Defying the conventional wisdom that no more than 30 percent of calories should come from fat, dieters in a Harvard study who ate 35 percent of their calories from the more healthful fats — the kind that nuts have — were three times as likely to keep the weight off as those who ate a diet with just 20 percent of the calories from fat.

Research over the last 15 years strongly suggests that everyone's diet should include nuts, even though an ounce of unroasted nuts provides 157 to 204 calories and 13 to 22 grams of fat. Large studies including the Harvard Nurses' Health Study (86,000 women), the Physicians' Health Study (22,000 men) and the Adventist Health Study (more than 40,000 people) have confirmed the link between eating nuts and a reduction in heart disease.

The monounsaturated fat in nuts, like the fat in olive oil and avocados, helps lower low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, the bad kind, without affecting high-density lipoprotein, the good kind. The more nuts in the diet — up to a point, of course — the greater the drop in cholesterol. (The point seems to be two ounces a day, researchers say.)

A higher-fat diet based on monounsaturated fat does not raise triglyceride levels, as does a diet low in fat and high in carbohydrates. Triglycerides are another risk factor in heart disease.

Nuts are also excellent sources of antioxidants, fiber and protein. They contain vitamins and minerals like magnesium, copper, folic acid and zinc that help protect against heart disease, high blood pressure and stroke, and may also prevent certain forms of cancer.

Federal dietary guidelines place nuts in the same food group as meat, poultry, fish and dry beans. The recommended two ounces of nuts a day is easy to fit into ordinary recipes.

Toast chopped walnuts or pecans and add them to a green salad. Coarsely grind nuts in a food processor and use them to coat salmon or chicken. Sprinkle toasted chopped nuts on green vegetables.

Of course, they are also a convenient choice for between-meal nibbling. Now that pretzels are out and peanuts are in, I wish they'd bring them back as an airline snack.

Did a good leg workout a couple days ago. Felt great, good burn doing calves. Only problem is now my calves are so tight and sore I can't walk. Ouch! Somehow they've set up and I can hardly move. Stretching helps. Hopefully I'll be mostly back to normal by the time I go to work tonight. I have to find that old bottle of Flex-all 454.

Anyway.

Mediaman . . .squats get me. If I lay off them for anytime at all, its as if I never did them.

squats
calf raises
leg extension
leg presss
calf thingy with the leg press

Yes. Tomorrow. I ran today, and could feel how tight my hamstrings were. I already warned my wife that walking tomorrow wasn't an option.

She reminded me that I will be driving all morning to get to my parents! That should tighten things up.

I really don't mind the pain. I love lifting. I like squats. I worry that running on cold days (today the wind chill is in the teens, I was out for 40 minutes), I worry that my overly tight hams will seize on me . . .at the turn around point of my run, and I will freeze to death.

but other than that . . .no problem.

Did 15 minutes on the arm bike today, at 90 RPM. I did 1 minute at moderately easy resistance ("4" on the machine I use) followed by 1 minute at moderately hard ("6"). The final minute gradually wound down to 0 RPM. It was a hard workout - I was able to do the same thing the other day, but speeding up to 95 RPM on the hard intervals. Ugh. Then, after doing some leg stretching to let my arms rest (good thing I was wearing a tank top, as they would have burst right through a regular sleeve!), I did 3 sets on the sitting overhead press (my name for it) machine, the bicep curl machine, and the lat pull machine (like a reverse chin-up). Arms were dragging on the ground on the walk back to the office!

Mediaman, yeah, I figured out the typo - heh heh. One of the problems I had with my hip is that 6 doctors couldn't figure out what was causing the pain. So I can't really say whether you or anybody else has the same problem. No, it's on the same side as the ankle I sprained.

Actually, just got back from my walking/jogging routine, and it felt GREAT. Felt like I could have run for half an hour or more straight. But I kept with the plan. Now it's off to stretch....

Oh, wildlife sightings during walk/jog: 4 jackrabbits.

Finally, weighed in at 169 again this morning, despite overindulging a bit going out to dinner last night: soup, paella, etc.

Monday Morning Weigh-in
OK, folks. Am I the only one still on this program?! Weighed in at 168 this morning, down 2 pounds since last Monday - won't count it until I'm here for a couple more days, of course. Off work today, so may head out to wife's office and hit the gym with her (theirs is nicer). Also may do a dayhike w/son, who is off school today.

BTW, my initial target is 160, and then to 155 if the 160 isn't too painful. By the time I get there, my hip should be improved enough that it'll be easier to keep the weight off.
