Monday Weigh-in!!
Oops, a little late. How's everyone doing? I went XC skiing over the weekend. Unfortunately, I traded all that calorie burning for more food than I should have eaten. My weight yesterday was back up to my starting point of 170. However, I weighed in at 167 today, so it'll be a few days before I can tell how I'm doing.

How 'bout all of you?!!

I think "eating less" is the old paradigm. You want to eat more, but it has to be the RIGHT foods...that is how you fire up your metabolism, which is the only way to lose real weight.

So, are you suggesting that the gigantic cheeseburger, plate of onion rings, mountain of fries, and pint of beer I had on Friday night wasn't the "right" food???

I've consolidated my initial drop of about 6 pounds. I'm moving very carefully in my exercise program to avoid any pulled muscles or other damage. But I'm creeping forward in either repetitions, weight amounts, or both.

Also, I'm reestablishing a strong habit of getting myself over to the health club, regardless of other things.

I feel like a handicaped person. Due to an eye problem I'm being extra careful in aikijutsu class. I throw the others, but no longer take the falls. Any hard impact could increase a retina problem. My body can take the bounces on the mat and other hard contacts, and I really want to be in it all the way. But there is a real danger to be considered with my eyesight. I have to reconcile myself that learning and executing the maneuvers is more important than taking my turn being thrown to help the others to learn. Fortunately, all my classmates understand my dilemma.

I gained weight this week. Not good. Need to exercise more.

Another nice drop evident on the scale this morning. I have been pretty religious about the gym, especially the cardio machines. Did an extra 5 min on each of the three last night. I am more than ecouraged, I've lost 1/3 of my pack weight, and I ain't an ultra light packer, although working that way. It REALLY feels great.

Good luck everyone, keep it up.

Yeah, vanilla decaf, hazlenut decaf, they taste pretty good, but there is not enough room in my skull for my brain and all that cottony fuzzy stuff. It is clouding my vision.

Holding steady at 145lbs. Lunch was a hard boiled egg, grapefruit, Diet 7up, yogurt. I'm going to sneak another Kit Kat out of my co-worker's drawer as soon as he heads to the Men's room! I might have another handful of Super Bowl leftover tortilla chips mid-afternoon.

145 pounds?! You...you...skinny guy, you! At least I know if we ever get into an argument, aero, I can just sit on you until you give up....

Lunch for me today (after my walk-jog in a few minutes) will be a Nile Spice soup (170 cal., 1g fat, 10g dietary fiber), a small piece of cornbread, carrots, celery, a banana, yogurt, and a Diet Pepsi. After lunch: coffee, then a pear later on.

Doing pretty good....this morning weighed in at 116lbs :)

Very happy, gotta keep it up though, it won't take much to slip back. Another 6lbs(approx), I'll be about where I want to be. Being very conscientious(sp) about eating the right foods and going to the gym 3X a week. Cardio, up to 30 min on the x-trainer, as well as, lots of sit-ups(I lose count about 48-60), and other upper body reps.

Yeah Marty, the bullies were kicking sand in my face at the beach so I been hitting the weight room 3 nights a week. I'd have to eat about a Bizzillion calories a day to bulk up....

You got that right, smiley girl! I noticed a change in the pants fitting even before I started to lose any pounds. Of course, now my muscles are ripping holes in my sleeves....

Well, not really....

My dad keeps telling me, it isn't the pounds that matter, it is the waistline. That is not vanity. That is probably a better way to evaluate your overall fitness program, assuming that in addition to losing fat, you will be gaining muscle.

My belt is tightened and my pants don't fit. YAY!

Celebrate everything you can, scale, fit, etc. I've taken moved several holes in my belts, and it really feels good. I can feel it in all my clothes, will soon be able to wear a T-shirt my daughter gave me that I've really been wanting to get into. This is good stuff Maynyrd.

I'm in heaven - I found that low carbohydrate beer by Michelob. Now I can substitute beer for other items on the Atkins diet.

I've lost 5 lbs, but it's slow going.

Eye candy-ha!

There's all these high school boys who are wannabe muscle boys having loudest grunt contests as they see who can bench press the most.

I also can't/don't see people's bodies that way. Too many years of critical observation of the human form, aka figurative drawing and painting.

My free day is today. My brother's in town and wanted a steak. So after eating well for the past three weeks I had a big ol' steak with potato skins and jalapeno poppers for lunch. Uuggghh! I can feel my digestive system coming to a halt while sitting here. Where'd I leave my psyllium husks?

On the lighter side, haven't lost much weight, but I think the love handles are less noticable. I've stuck faithfully to my working out and eating right.

Hang in, Mediaman! I noticed a distinct change in my "handle area" before the weight actually started to come off. Now I'm dropping about a pound a week. BTW, my wife just reached her goal weight (WW) last week by mysteriously dropping 6 pounds in 2 weeks - seems like her metabolism suddenly revved up - she is psyched!!

I got off the Atkins Diet. I did lose 5 pounds the first few weeks, but I also lost all my energy. I couldn't keep going on hikes, and I felt terrible this past week.

Now I'm reading up on the American Heart Association's Guidelines for dieting. I think it's only high carbohydrate foods that have tons of refined sugar that I need to cut out.

I'm so looking forward to buying that nice loaf of wholewheat bread.

I had always wondered about hiking or other long distance activities and the Atkins diet.

Atkins only works after your body depletes itself of stored glycogen in the muscles, then it starts to burn fat for energy. But aerobic activities (such as hiking, biking, running) use the glycogen in the muscle tissue for fuel. I can see how intense exercise and Atkins might not be a great mix.

Oops, forgot to prompt everyone for the Monday morning check in - REPORT!!

I weighed in at 167 Monday morning, down a half pound from my last week's average. This morning was probably an anomaly (or maybe yesterday's was), as I weighed in at 164.

How 'bout all of you????

Royal Canadian Air Force Exercises
Back in the '60's there was a very popular exercise program. It was the Royal Canadian Air Force Exercise Plan printed in a small, paperback and called, The 5BX Plan For Physical Fitness.
FOREWORD
The Five Basic Exercises (5BX) Plan presented in this booklet is designed to show you how to develop and hold a high level of physical fitness, regardless of where you may be located. the scheme is not dependent on elaborate facilities or equipment. The exercises require only eleven minutes a day and can be done in your bedroom or beside your bed in the barracks.
It is still a great program. And it requires no special equipment.

"Unfortunately, this document is now out of print. Some bookstores, however, may still have them in stock. The ISBN number of the book is 0-660-01362-2."

The document can be downloaded. There are instructions. Good luck.

oh oh Binge
Tough weekend:

Friday night business function:

4 -5 glasses of wine
2 glasses port
2 light beers

various passed hor's d-erves:
5 fried oysters
2 beef on a stick
2 duck spring rolls
etc

Pastry shell with Fois Gras (goose liver)

Pomegranate sorbet

Roast rack of Veal

Salad

Pear Creme Brulee

Saturday wife's birthday:

1 glass white wine
1/2 bottle red
glass of port

Bread w/olive oil
Shared bowl of mussels

roast beet salad

calf's liver with mashed potatoes in a demi-glace

I am gonna get huge!!!!

ON Saturday I pulled my 40 lb kid through the state forest on a sled for 2 hours while snowshoing . . .I figure that may have worked some of it off.

Then Sunday I went back out for an hour and half, after sledding with the kids for an hour.

But the Calf's live alone had to be good for 1000 calories at least!!
