Great Diet!

This is for those of you who watch what you eat. Here's the final word on nutrition and health. It's a relief to know the truth after all those conflicting medical studies.

1. The Japanese eat very little fat and suffer fewer heart attacks than the British or Americans.

2. The Mexicans eat a lot of fat and also suffer fewer heart attacks than the British or Americans.

3. The Japanese drink very little red wine and suffer fewer heart attacks than the British or Americans.

4. The Italians drink excessive amounts of red wine and also suffer fewer heart attacks than the British or Americans.

5. The Germans drink a lot of beer and eat lots of sausages and fats and suffer fewer heart attacks than the British or Americans.

CONCLUSION: Eat and drink what you like. Speaking English is apparently what kills you

I'm sure one of the usual suspects will point out that use of both the word "bikini" and the phrase "halter top" require that the user post a photo modeling such items. I won't point that out, but someone else will....

Wow, it's been more than 2 months since the last post on this thread!

I am happy to report that I have actually achieved my goal weight a few days early. I weighed 175 pounds on November 4, 2002, and joined this thread at 170 pounds in January. I wanted to be 155 pounds by June 1st, and here I am! Yay for me!

Howz everyone else doing? Still stickin' with it?

Good job, Marty!
I read a study once that said that for every pound you lose, your running pace speeds up (in a marathon) 2 sec./mile. That means you should be about 18 minutes faster in your next marathon!

I'm down almost 20 pounds since September and didn't do it on purpose. My best playing weight was above 165 toward 170, but I'm below 150 now. Three weeks ago I went to tackle another forward and he raised his arm and blew me out of the water. Now I'm really retired from rugby. Humph!

Aero, the only problem is that I weighed about 5 pounds less than I do now when I ran my last marathon!

How does it translate for 10k?
Martyb

That sounds kind of painful, Gremlin.
LyndyS

5/28/03

Maybe a little less of an effect in a 10K since (light)weight is a real premium in the marathon. So maybe 1.5 sec./mi/lb in a 10K??

Plus, you can get drunk faster!

Fell off the wagon on some trips, but holding within reason. Will hit it again with gym times and better diet. Still hiking faster than ever, which happened when I started loosing weight.

Clothes, oh yeah! I was starting to burst out of them, but now they fit again. And I had bought a few things when I was, um, bigger, that just went into the donation pile. Some of the belt holes I'm using now have never been used. Woo hoo!

congrats Martyb! That's a great accomplishment! You should feel really good about yourself because losing weight is one of the hardest things to do in my book.

Gremlin and smiley girl-congrats to you too! I want to lose 15 but have been having a hard time because of all the social activities going on. I'm just going to have to either say no to some of those get togethers or have more willpower at the parties.

the hardest thing is the most simple. if i just ate smaller portions, and said no more often to the sweets (but not always!) i'd be just fine. but, as we all know, that's easier said than done!

A couple of quick notes about why I think I was successful:

- I gave myself 5 months to lose 15 pounds; that's less than a pound a week.

- The biggest change I made in eating patterns was to give up my big bowl of cereal in the morning and have only a banana and orange juice. I didn't cut out my afternoon snack at the office, but merely substituted a piece of fruit for the cookies or candy bar. I didn't give up beer or wine, but cut back from about 5-7 servings a week to 3-4.

- I adopted a consistent program of upper body weight training. My workout is only about 15-20 minutes and I only do it 2-3 times a week. But just building a little bit of muscle did seem to eat into the fat.

- My wife was also trying to lose weight (which she did, much to her delight!) - it definitely helped to have a partner in the weight loss program!

I just realized that by eating all this chocolate and doing all this mindless office work that I am doing nothing to prevent a severe case of "receptionist" a**!

My new slogan: Eat more spinich! (of course, only if it's green chocolate in the shape of spinich!)

lol!!!

I've lost 'bout 40 lbs since this January, 55 lbs since beginning of 2002. Only 'bout 15 more pounds until I reach my goal weight! Of course, losing the weight is the easy part...its keeping it off. During high school-college, I lost more than 100 lbs....obviously, it didn't stick.

I lose the weight by eating as much as I want, and exercising even more. I plan to keep the weight off this time by taking a walk (approximately 4 miles) everyday for the rest of my life. So far I've gone 4 1/2 months without missing a day.

Wow, chips! you've gone 4 1/2 months without stopping? You have definately formed a great habit there!

Martyb, good job on doing it, "your way". Everyone needs to find what works for them.

How long do they say it takes to form a habit? Isn't it 21 or 28 days? Again, good luck to everyone on reaching your goals!

Yeah, Ynam, I used to brag that I was the only 54 year old, 165 lb, asthmatic, arthritic prop in league rugby to-day, but I'm gone. I told my club that I would be tajking out social membership only, but they got me a player's card anyway. Instead of the 200$ registration fee, they're only charging me the 50$ that they have to send to the Federation for me. Apparently, I'm something of a 'character' - local colour, that ia.

LOL I told myself that if in 6 months of my resolution I didnt drop some weight I would enroll in a weight watchers thingy program. Well its been six months...and I hvent lost much (in fact i friggin managed to GAIN on my last backpacking trip...how the heck does that happen???) So I enrolled in weight watchers and i will see if that works for me :)

Free, my wife had her success (about 30 pounds worth!) through WW. I think it's a good way to learn to manage what you eat. Plus, there's a lot of support through the meetings, etc., not to mention an infinite supply of yummy recipes.

weight watchers
My mom took me to my first WW's meeting when I was in junior high. It never really worked for me (or for my mom, for that matter), but my sister lost like 100lbs on WWs last year after she had her baby. Also, if nothing else, it taught me some very good habits, like eating fruits / veggies and drinking lots and lots of water.

I personally prefer creating one's own diet / exercise program. But for those who need structure, I believe WWs has to be the best option out there. GL.

As for gaining weight on a hike, I always do. Its 'cause I load up on fat before, during, and AFTER the hike.

I finally joined a gym and have started working out and watching what I eat. So far in the last 2-3 months I have lost about 15-20 lbs. Even stovestomper could tell I was hiking faster on the last trip, of course we were going downhill...lol
I am trying to go times a week but so far I have only made it twice a week but it beats not going.

I wanted to choke the last person who brought this up to the top, I had fallen off the wagon big time. But I've been born again, got the religion, and am taking it off. Not to much damage from my remission to the world of carbo'halism but it'll take a couple weeks to recover.

How's everyone else doing?

I'm gaining your weight!
I just came back from a 10 day in the Trinity's (IE steep up and down) the sweat poured off in 105 degree weather, no wind, I carried a 60 lb pack, ate about 1200/1800 calories a day and only lost 1.5 lb when I got home, next morning the scales said I was the same weight as when I left.

Now I know why at least.....

I've lost 20 pounds since early June. Was 295, now 275. My goal is somewhere in the neighborhood of 220.

My key? Grilling! I've been eliminating most red meat and now grill lots of fish and chicken breasts. I make all of my meals can't-miss events. And I've got this cool smoothie maker... Of course, giving up most pop and snacks outside of meals is also helping.

But, generally, I've found this surprisingly easy. And I read in a book that to maintain 220 pounds for a 6'3" man takes about 3700 calories per day. That means I can eat three good meals per day. BTW, Red Raspberry Diet Rite is a good pop alternative.
