If it was up to me, I would just display it all over the living room floor, but my boyfriend says that's not acceptable.

Something about minimizing chaos. ppppppppppppt

So I have to keep it in a spare room. Anybody try to cram it all in a closet? The garage?

I have an alcove/small room type deal that extents out of my living room. Half of that area is my computer room, the other half is my gear room. It's pretty sweet!

And just why do you want to know?

Where do you keep your birth certificate, passport and financial information?

We have a nice 12'x12' shed (wood-frame - looks like a little house; you can see the front of it here) in our back yard. Gear is in paper boxes in there, except for the bigger stuff, which is on shelves or hanging up. Our garage is too small, and we have practically zero closet space (house built in '38).

ceiling!
I've installed shock cord loops from the ceiling in my bedroom. All gear except the down bags is held up against the ceiling.Sleeping pads require a lose fitting cord so no permanent compression occurs.

no joke Violin. On a recent inventory of my valuables, I realized my backpacking gear is only second in worth to my college books (and who would steal those??)

I know a lot of homeless guys who would kill for my sleeping bag.

I live in a 1909 flat. There's a crawlspace under the stairs that lead to the upstairs unit. Gear is under there. Of course, there is misc. pieces of gear strewn about but the bulk of it is under the stairs.

Scattered.
Some of it's in a closet, some of it's in the bedroom. Most of it's in a stack (in plastic boxes) in the middle of the dining room floor. Now that G00SE has finished the storage space in the attic (finally!), we just need to move it up there.

The clear plastic storage containers that are wide and long ,but not high fit under shock cord on the ceiling great. You can see the contents from below and are easy to remove and replace if the cords are positioned and of proper length.my house has sailboards, mast, bows and arrows---al kinds of crap hung in this manner. With creative positioning it really looks koool. You must consider light damage in rooms with lots of natural light ,but covers and a little thought can solve that.

wow Salebored...you've put a lot of work into some serious storage there! Very impressive.

Now that we finally own a house, storage isn't a problem...we've got a huge shed/workshop, plus an attached storage closet off the deck. My beloved WM bag stays in its shrine in my walk-in closet though...also many misc items that may suffer from the damp or lonliness.
;o)

Before we had the house...well, that was a disaster. We had one small dedicated closet with shelves to the ceiling
...in order to get one thing out of the closet, you had to rip the guts out of it.
Many an avalanche occured!

In my "MAN ROOM" as my wife calls it.The "MAN ROOM" is set up for sports watching as well. All things "Manly" are done in this room but ONE!!
Lots of rubbermaid containters and big stuff sacks in the closet. Packs hang from the clothes rack from carabiners.

Two or three rubbermaids in the closet do the trick for me. The closet is getting more crowded as I expand my skills/interests. May need to expand my storage space soon.

Gear for backpacking and camping and a few other hobbies are kept on metal shelves (erector set type) in a basement room. Packs and Float tubes and rods etc are hung from ceiling joist with wire loops.

I know I saw it the other day!
I am very organized____Well, I have plans to get very well organized. Just now things are a little scattered:

in a storage area 6 miles away
in the car trunk
on the car floor (last two hiking sticks rotting away)
kitchen area where some things are used
cupboards with other dishes and cups
cubbyholes
in the bedroom which I don't use
under a table
in a closet

And in the Florida Room:
hanging from the ceiling (one sleeping bag)
on the bed (a sleeping bag that I use)
under the bed
on a long, high shelve
hanging from the shelve with other clothes
in boxes in various places
out of boxes in various places
in a dresser
on top of things
under things
on a metal bookcase
and wherever.

On a long trip I, usually, spend weeks searching for things, slowly. Then, after I get real frustrated, I grab whatever I can, throw it in the car, and take off. Then, at a campground, I sort things out, pack, and then go backpacking with whatever I was fortunate enough to bring. While backpacking, I plan how I'm finally going to get things organized after I return home. One of these days I will do it.

Did you say you want some help, MaryPhyl?

I also have a Man Room, my bonus room above the attached Garage. Don't want to put my stuff in the garage because mice could possibly ruin my gear. I keep my sleeping bags in an antigue cedar chest, makes em smeel real good, too.

We have a closet that's about 3 and a half feet deep and nine feet long. It's pretty packed; 6 huge rubbermade tubs, packs and trekking poles and sleeping bags hanging, two rubbermade drawer systems full of misc small bits and food.

Most of the clothes are in our bedroom though, except for raingear and down jackets and booties.

I don't know what the heck we'll do if we have another kid and need to use this bedroom. I guess we'll be doing some attic renovation or something.

I have an area, about 1/4 of my basement. It gives me enough room to hang wet tents and bags after a trip. I will be re-doing this area in the coming months to better use this space. I would like to put in a book shelf and a desk where I can plan trips and such. Plans have it that I hope to put a computer with internet access in the room as well.

My entire condo is my gear room.

Some time ago, my neighbor was with me when I opened my front door. She looked inside, gasped and said "Oh my god. Someone broke in and trashed your place!" I just sighed and explained that it always looks like that.

We have a 2 car garage, with extra space in the back, big enough for another room. SnowDude built shelves and we stack them with rubbermaid boxes. The weight bench (and stationary bike) is now used for drying/airing out gear after trips. Hooks on the walls for ice axes, crampons, packs, chairs, poles, etc. The rolling bins from Costco with drawers for Gu, power bars, camp food, etc.

Before we got this place, stuff ended up wherever we could find space.

lol Pennsy!

I have a Gearattic (patent pending), in a old house (1924). To get to my gearattic, you have to go through my office, through a secret passage door. The gearattic consists of shelving that has the gear organized by category, and my packs and bags hang from caribiners by a steel wire line I attached to the rafters.

Needless to say, I love my gearattic.

Most of it Rubbermaid boxes or a closet in a spare bedroom. Used to keep a lot of clothes in an old dresser in the attic until I discovered several pair of never worn Trekker socks had become home to the mice. Quite a bit just stays in the car on a permanent basis, and a whole lot more floats around the house 'cause it goes from bping to trail maintenance to forest fite fighting to structure fire fighting. Half the time I never know what incarnation it's residing in, but that's a good excuse to buy more so I have spare stuff to float around.

1/3 of my basement: two 4' X 8' peg boards overlook a 3' X 8' set-up table, and two sets of shelves with labeled rubbermaid containers, and on the near wall, 7 sleeping bags hung from the rafters, and on the opposite wall 7 backpacks hung from the rafters, with a dozen drying hooks between.

My gear is in rubermaid tubs in my bedroom closet, filling up the coat closet in the living room, and the stuff that just came back from a trip is on the diving room table and the floor. I have hiking books and maps piled allover the place. Last week I took some junk from the garage to the landfill, so now I'm going to try to organize an area in the garage where I can store the gear.

Lucky to have storage room with lots of shelving, largely covered with wife and kid junk, off my rec room. I get a corner for the most valueable stuff, the more scarry gear, stoves, lanterns, etc go in a reloading room off the garage.

Right now I have it in my closet, (takes over about half of it). Now that I have a saw and all this good stuff I will make me a closet like thingy and put all my gear up in the office. I do seperate frequently used items from rarely used items just by seperating them on different shelfs. I always have my daypack packed and it's on my closet floor.

I keep most of my gear in three large Rubbermaid totes in a spare bedroom. My sleeping bag is laying flat under the bed - the cats usually sleep on it. I always try to keep the stove and fuel out in the shed along with the coleman lantern and 2 burner stove(for family camping). My clothing is scattered around in a couple different drawers and closets. I would like to find a better system for my clothing - it is the hardest thing to find before a trip - maybe a couple more Rubbermaid containers !

* Clothing in Rubbermaid boxes on shelf in closet.
* Sleeping bags and down jacket in cotton storage sacks on top of rubbermaid boxes on shelf in closet.
* Tents (6) in stuff sacks, in a neat line under MY SIDE of the bed. Climbing ropes (3) take up the rest of my side.
* Lights/headlamps/compass/ whistle/bic lighters/bandanas in a drawer. This is where I keep my packing list.
* Fuel in garage
* Everything else in small corner of basement. Pots, packs, stoves, boots, crampons, snowshoes.
