Mountain Hardwear Pack Wrap Skirt
What do you think of this?

I've been thinking about hiking in a skirt for years now, due to the comfort and ventilation factor. Also, not having to completely expose oneself on the trail when nature calls is a BIG plus!

Sierra Trading Post has it on sale for 40 bucks...I'm gettin' it! Of course, the gear review probably won't be posted until SPRING! LOL

Ah, the ventilation factor!

Does it come with weights for windy conditions?

good point, Tom! Not weights, but it does have velcro closure so the wrap-around effect stays put for those gusty winds.

Would a "man skirt" for hiking be a hit?

It would give new meaning to free-ballin'.

Leonard Skinner...Free Bird. heheheh
actually, MH does make a kilt for men...
backpacker mag did an article on it a while back. I think there was some discussion on the matter here, but I am pretty sure it was disparaging. Just guessing. ;o)

Some dude was posting here a while back about a hiking kilt, which sounded essentially like a hiking skirt for me. Sorry, but I don't like to look like a wee little schoolgirl while I'm hiking, it'd scare people off!

'Cause some woman somewhere gonna take ya....

If I wanted my legs exposed, I'd wear shorts. I usually wear long pants even in warm weather to protect my legs from brush, bugs etc. I'm not sure I would remember to sit "modestly", either.

I guess a skirt is okay, but I would not wear one. Don't like the idea while climbing someone could look up my skirt. Wish they would make some shorts that come off easy when you got to "go".

Hmmmm.....a hiking skirt? The added mobility and ventilation sound nice, as does the "pee" factor... However, what about rock scrambling? I foresee a visable daytime moon rising! Yeah, and bugs? Especially in areas where you have to deal with ticks.....not a fun thought...

Looking forward to your gear report!

I read about a woman who was hiking the AT who had a pair of shorts that had a zippered crotch so she didn't have to pull her shorts down to pee. I think her trailname was "Split-P".

I like the ladies version... but I wouldn't wear it on the heardpath between Algonquin and Iriquois! I once ran into a naked hiker on the PA AT (I swear!), he was only wearing moccasins and a leather handband - enter "twilight zone" music!

Twinkle Toes made a good point about the ticks. I don't even like to wear shorts when it's mild because of them. I've been using medical scrubs because they are cool, dry fast and easily tuck into your socks. In a light color you can see the ticks and flick them off.

Don't know if it's still in business, but there was a Twin-Cities company that made women's outdoor shorts and pants featuring a velcroed seam in the crotch. I think the design worked something like the split in the floor of the Hennessy Hammock.

hhhhmmmm. Ok AmyG I am seriously weighing the pros and cons

pro's:
Damn, we look cute. And no longer the fear of some stranger taking a peek at our moons when nature calls...
Also, less chaffing between the legs as there's no material to rub there!

con's :
How do you cross your legs wilst sitting on a low rock?
Will people think this is silly?

I would buy the skirt for wearing around but not necessarily while backpacking. For dayhikes at the beach though, it's fine.

let 'em look, who cares?!
I think I would wear women's boxer-briefs underneath to eliminate the worry of peeping TomT's. ;)

As for bugs, ticks et al, is it any different than shorts really?

I have been in many a situation where I reeeeally needed to answer the call and no friendly rock, tree or bush (oh behave) was in sight! With the skirt, I could just turn around and whip it out like the boys do! heheheh

I've got it:

A big long flouncy pioneer skirt made out of medical scrub fabric ---instant bathroom curtain, cool flapping breeze, and enough material to prevent anyone from seeing anything while climbing. Of course, you'll trip on it and fall but nothing is perfect.

I know it's nothing unusual, but I'm confused, lol.

You're concerned that they see your moon while doing your business, but it's ok if they look up your skirt? j/k!
Personally I'm pretty sure that if anyone saw my moon they'd get whiplash turning the other way, so I don't worry about it.

All I wear are these really great shorts (that I can't find anymore) that are quick dry material for canoeing. Nice wide legs, easy care, and have a nice mesh zip pocket along with the regular pockets.
