City bans smelly people from buses

January 14, 2003 (BEND, Ore.) — You better hit the shower before you board the bus in Bend.
Proposed new city rules would ban spitting, smoking, skateboarding, and stinking on city buses.

The regulations ban anyone who "emanates a grossly repulsive odor that is unavoidable by other Bend Extended Area Transit customers" from being in the bus station or on a bus.

"It's an effort to keep the riding experience as pleasant and safe as possible," said city attorney Jim Forbes. He noted that the city already has an ordinance prohibiting people from releasing "highly objectionable odors" from their property.

The City Council will consider preliminary approval of the ordinance Wednesday.

The city's transit system is currently reservations-based. Last year, the city expanded the transit service for seniors and the disabled into a service for the general public, but no scheduled routes have been established.

Why not just place a communal deoderant stick outside the busdoors and make everyone give themselves a BO check before they get on?

Will they have stink-o-meters installed?

Will laborers have to walk home?

Why would anybody want to go to a place named Bend anyway?

could someone please define "highly objectionable odor" from a lawyer's standpoint? Seems like a loophole here, what if I (or others) like the odor? Do I get to ride the bus for free and can I counter-sue?

I haven't been to Bend, but I hear it's the snootiest place in Oregon so this doesn't surprise me.

Just another attempt to sweep the homeless element under the carpet. Out of sight, out of mind.

A good argument for public showers...

I suppose if you have enough money you're entitled to not encounter stinky people on the bus or in the station.

I guess Fartex can scratch Bend off his itinerary.

What Artex Said
I gave up my seat once to a couple so they could sit beside one another because there were only single seats left on the bus. Unfortunately, I sat beside a person who stunk of urine, and ended up having to sit beside him the whole ride because the other seats filled up so quickly. So I can understand the "...stinking on city buses." thing.

I wonder if anyone skateboards for transportation like bicycles or rollerblades, or if the city plans to provide a SK8 park to give the skaters a place to ride much like a basketball or tennis court?

As far as I know, Bend is where the rich people retire. I don't know if they'd build a skate park there. I don't think skateboards should be banned from buses if you're holding it under your arm. In my opinion, this is disciminatory.

I was sitting in a farm stand restaurant a few years ago, with a bunch of thruhikers, when some snotty family from NY walked in. The little kid looked over at us, twitched his nose, and turned to his family and shouted, "Look, dad, it's real hobos!"

What's the difference between a hobo and a thruhiker?

Maybe the alledged stinky people could just hang some of those car air fresheners around their necks; a nice piney scent!

I can tell I'm almost out of the back country when I start smelling cologne and other fruity, non-dead-body kinda smells on day hikers who are venturing forth from the trail head.

Buddur-
Just kiddin' about the skateboards.
I don't want that killer mutt of your's to eat me in my sleep next time we meet.

What Buddur Said
Build it, and they will come. Give the skaters a good skatepark, run it correctly by holding professional and amateur contests there and it will soon become a mecca. It's a great sport that dosen't get the respect it deserves.

Whenever I hear Bend Oregon I imagine it with a Scottish accent
"Bend O'er again"

I love that law, I'd call cops on old ladies who wear too much perfume

They say that there's a whole generation of American kids growing up who haven't built up their resistance to a lot of bugs because we're so sanitized. That's why we let our 4 year old spend the day rollind around in the backyard with two, large dogs.

Our public library gets pretty ripe when the all homeless people hang out in the newspaper and periodical sections in the winter! It's not bad at first, then they start to thaw out!
