well as you may know, the last trip got to me. I was not able to complete it. I guess I was not as ready as I thought I was. I did learn that an Inhaler can and will freeze! My pack was to small to be able to handle all the extra clothing.
So I licked my brused ego and i'm going to try it again.
But ive changed the milage to about 3 to 5 miles.
I want to enjoy this overnight!
So im looking for a good and easy 3 to 5 mile hike.
Im looking for it to be in
NY, NJ, PA, CT
everyone is welcome. But remeber this is an easy hike. I feel off the horse and I need to get back on at my own pace.

Any ideas?

AmyG sent me some maps of the Batona Trail in south central NJ, down in the Pine Barrens. Flat, flat, flat (read easy) with trailheads, ie; bailout points, all along the way. Lemme know if you're interested and I'll send you copies. S'posed to be some nice scenery and even a little solitude, considering where it is.

Good you're getting back on the horse. My first winter solo snowshoe hike - many years ago - was definitely a learning experience.

Just a thought Maple, but considering both the fix you were in on the last trip and Treebeard's heel spur, have you considered going car camping?

My point would be that you could pack more warm clothing without having to lug it down the trail, and the car would be there if you needed to bail out.

This would give you an opportunity to get used to winter camping, perhaps decide whether it is for you or not, and take stock of what equipment needs you might have.

It's just a thought to consider.

That's the spirit!!! I'll look over my maps when I get home and give you some siggestions Mapleleaf.

There are several other routes in Harriman that may be what you're looking for. Catskills, well, mountains are obviously quite a bit taller, but I'll see if I can't find a good route there. However, snowshoes would likely be a necessity.

Mapleleaf PA has a lot of snow and it’s very cold single digits last night and never got out of the teens today and no warm up in sight. How about a hike in Harriman on the Long Path between Route 6 and Arden Valley Road It’s 4.2 miles with a night at the Stockbridge Shelter. There’s a parking area on Route 6 and you can put a car in the parking area at the Tiorati Circle parking area of course you’ll need two cars.

You are right Geobeet, But I know where I went wronge and i need to go out and try it again very soon!
Bigger pack, less miles and keep my inhaler next to my body to keep it warm!!

thanks chili36,I'll check it out.

Must hike,
Im thinking of Harriman also. I did like the shelter that had the fireplace inside. It was pretty cozy!
bring a sled along for some wood!!

Must hike is right about the snow in PA. The foothills of the Poconos have a tough snowpack about 14 inches or so, and it's harder hiking without snowshoes. I've been using snowshoes because it's so much more efficient to get around. I'm toying around with the idea of hiking part of the Pinchot trail this weekend in the Poconos. It's supposed to be a low of 3 in the city so it will be below zero up there.

We can always go up there some other time since it's not that far of a drive. The cold temps have me interested in going up there this weekend and snowshoeing through the swamps is a pretty good way to check areas out that you could never get to at other times of the year. There's some really nice bogs up there that are kind of cool. Mash creek bog is huge.

Has anyone ever stayed at a Cave Shelter. There is one in Harriman that im thinking about. If it doesnt turn out good then there is a shelter less then 1/2 mile from the cave.

Maple I’ve never slept in it, but I’ve seen it. I’d pick the shelter it has a nice view, besides a hibernating bear might not want to share his cave with you.

I’ve never seen one in Harriman, but with the boom in the bear population in North Jersey I’d have to assume there are bear in Harriman.

Hey maple, I don't know much about where to trip in your neck of the woods. Just wanted to say that the girls and I took out the old Coleman Kayak the other day. The county park just down the road has a fairly large retention pond as its center piece, so we took it down there, blew it up, and took turns paddling while the iothers played on the swings and stuff.

Maple here is a link to Promised Land State Park in PA it's about 5 minutes from my house. You could get a campsite on the lake for your kayak. The park is surrounded by Delaware State Forest. There are plenty of hiking trails in the park and the state forest.

hey maple...
not to be a smartyass, but...

DO YOU THINK YOU COULD DO YOUR OWN RESEARCH???

sheesh...if your wanting to know about particular places to go and kayak, then do a search on the web to the various state parks in your vacinity (NY) and then call a ranger and talk to them. Good grief woman!!! plan your own trip, cause the rest of us don't know what you want to do, how far you want to drive, and how much money you want to spend on your extra vacation days...actually, I'd invite you to travel to Vegas on April 4 and come play in Death Valley, but your Kayak would do you know good there (they don't have no water to float on in DV) but you only have 2 days to spend, and I'll be there for 5.

Your too funny...Love ya though.

Good luck 8-)

the pros and the cons.

Maple here is an idea for you! You could come up to the old loggers path hike and ferry us across pleasant stream! Jmitch says that it shouldn't be too bad only about 2.5 feet deep, I don't know about him but at 2.5 feet deep parts of me will be in the cold water that I do not like to have immersed in cold water.
Your Kayak would come in really handy.
