Mine single favorite is Old Peculiar, an english medium/dark. Hard to find but worth it.

Old Peculiar
Dhutch --

Back in 1985-86 I was in England for my Junior year abroad. There was a free pub just off campus. A free Pub (or free house) was not literally free, they charged you for your beer, it simply meant that they weren't affliated with any one brewer.

IN ANY EVENT . . .we used to walk off campus and up the hill to the Swan and drink pints of Old Peculiar all night.

As I remember it . . .it was pretty good stuff. We did that at least once or twice a week. It was pretty hard to resist the pubs on campus. Not only was the cost of a pint subsidized (that's right folks . . .the cost of 20 ounces of beer (an imperial pint) was subsidized by the British government for its beloved students), not only was it subsidized (30 - 50 pence per pint, whihc, a the exchange rate then would have been 50 to 75 cents), one of my flatmates tended bar, so she would just pour us drinks for free.

But anyways . . .yes I know old peculiar well.

Lyra --

I aims to please . . .thanks.

Tilt --

Uhm . . .I am not sure if you were being punny or something, so I will answer seriously . .

Old Peculiar at the Swan was served from a gravity pull draft. Not sure if that is the technically correct name (I am not sure gravity had anything to do with it) but it was the kind of "pull" that most of the "flat" british bitters and ales were poured with.

You know those fancy porcelin draft pulls that bars have now??? That you can see the emblem of the Brewer on??? ( i was in a bar on Captiva, the pull for Fosters was a boomerrang).

Anyyhooo . . back, way back in 1985, the bitters and ale weren't forced out via carbonation . .The bartender would literally pull down on the long handle and "draw" the beer out of the depths of the cellar. It would take a few pulls to fill a 20 ounce pint.

Hey lyra! I just got the coolest gift; a Homer Simpson bottle opener. When you pop open a bottle the opener speaks and says, in Homer's voice, "(Pop!) Ahhhhhh, beeerr.(Pouring sounds) Oh yes, yes!"

Yes, I've seen those taps, Lee... but haven't seen draught OP on this side of The Pond. When I first had some, it was in South Carolina in a strange little wide-mouth bottle.

Then again, there's This....

CMB - flattered

I am cool anyway. So cool I'm a geek, right Q

I got my taste for real beer in Germany on a small brewer's Hauff beer in the Mittel Bavarian region. Awesome weizen and an even better Kristkindlesbier. I prefer Weizen in the summer. Auf dem Somer. Talk about some bier drinkers!

I'll butcher this, but I love Wernishstiener beer. My sister introduced me to it. She's moving back to the US from being in Germany (Munster) for almost six years.

CMB - just yanking yer chain!

PS how in the hell did we get on the beer subject?

I might be interested in the Plymouth Ice Festival if the plans are a little before 330. I work this weekend. :( I can hang for a few with everyone, and would like to do that. My email is in my profile, I think. I'll check.

How did I miss a beer thread?!
Picked up some Belgian Style Ale, New Belgium Brewing Co. (same brewery as Fat Tire). Not bad. On the bitter side from the hops, but a good flowery taste to it, like a good Belgian Ale should.

But you know me, I come and go and check in when I can.

Say hi when you see me and stop by anytime if your out my way. I'm easy to find if you know where to look.

HI Smiley, thanks WK. I'm crawling out of the great big busy hole called relocation. Gave up life for a summer to move the entire household, horse and all to Chicago. I'll be back. It's just that work is also crazy with the whole relo thing. Heck I haven't backpacked since March if you don't include the 3 day adventure race!

Love Chicago though :-) I live in the cutest town in the world!
