Need your help....
I am concidering an extended bp trip soon and I have been toying around with my food. I have been searching in vain for plastic bags that can be bought in bulk and with stand the heat of boiling water being poured into them, just like the Enertia Trail Foods bags. Does anyone out there know where I might find these "boil bags"?

ZIPLOC
makes some called "EZ Fill" and I am not sure where I saw them. Maybe you can order some online? If I see them out, I will let you know, though.

Reynolds Oven Bags?

They're lighter weight, but designed to take the heat.

Used Then Dozens Of Times With NO Problems
I use ZipLoc Freezer Bags with foods I need to pour hot water into, even the generic "freezer bags" will work.

got to watch those plastics. (make sure to read the package if they are okay to heat up) I've heard that some of them have some bad chemicals that go right into your food once heated. They oven bags are a great idea.

Buddur is right. I've even placed Ziplocs in the microwave and boiled water in them to test. No problem, though I'm sure ZipLoc wouldn't recommend it.

I use zip lock freezer bags as well and have never had a problem. And any more that is all I take my food in. I do take a couple extra just incase one might leak.

"freezer" bags and "storage" bags have worked for me. Our Boy Scout troop used to prepare omelettes by mixing ingredients in freezer bags and then boiling them. No problemo.

Can't sleep!
From the Glad website, www.glad.com:

'Glad food bags are made from 100% polyethylene (not polyvinyl chloride) and do not contain plasticizers'...(this implies that nothing will volatilize off if you heat it up, contrary to popular belief--except maybe polyethylene (PE), but it would have to melt first since PE doesn't sublime...

However, the site also warns... 'The plastic used in these bags has a low melting point.' (So, this implies that the worst that could happen is you could melt the bag and potentially eat it-as far as I know, PE is not toxic, if it were, people would be dying everyday as it is everywhere.

laqtis, are you thinking along the lines of one of those systems where you bag the food (in heavy duty plastic bags provided) and vacuum seal them? My Mom had one of those systems. I think she got it from one of those $19.99 TV deals. It worked great and you really could boil the bags.

Do what Wolfeyes said.
The EZ Fill got the pleated bottom and so they stand up instead of having to figure out how to keep your food from rolling out.

You can use the type of bags that are sold for the sealing machines. They are much stronger and can be boiled and frozen with no damage or the risk of bursting. I bough them at a department store to fit my Dazy heatsealer. You'll need the sealer though to close them. I think mine was around $20 and came with a few bags.

Q - Don't you save your Enertia bags after you've eaten a meal? I've got several laying around that I use when I dehydrate my own meals. They work great. I've found that you can rehydrate the food and, come dinner time, stick the whole bag in boiling water to heat it up.

Other than that, I've added boiling water to ZipLoc and Glad Freezer Bags, like many people here. No trouble yet.

Q, I have a brand new sealer and bags you can try. Birch couldn't get it to work but I think he must've been going about it wrong. It's been sitting and gathering dust for three years now. I'd love it if someone used it.

I hope you folks are aleast making the effort to recycle and reuse many of these plastic bag. I know I do until they are ruined. Most of them , the good ones, are durable to reuse many a times over.

....so how was that like and what are you now?? j/k....

Tarabull - yep, after I thought of it, I tryied to say as many of them as I could, but there gone now.

jerbear - I just might do that. They are pretty helpful. I am planning on order some food from them, so maybe they'll throw in some extra bags....

biz - thank you very much for you're research. I was worried about the toxic issue with the regular bag.

Phil - great idea about the eggs. My powdered stuff will go back in the food bag.

wolfeyes, richB, WD, Buddur, WLD, Geezer, Tilt - thanks again. I knew I could count on everyone to help. Learn sumpthin' knew everyday!

Freezer weight bags should be fine as long as you move them around in the water so they don't develop hot spots and melt. THose vacuum pack systems are the best, I think. THey are heavier than the freezer weight bags. They also seem to be more puncture resistant.

Geeze, leave off one little "H" and the ribbing begins! ;)

So, do you want that vacuum system or not, (may offer it up to other TTer's to get it out of my pantry)?

My folks have an old Seal-a-meal they're giving us. I know how it works.

I'll get the box out and stick it with the hiking stuff so I don't forget.

ziplock pint freezer bags...
dehydrate your food, put it in the bag, freeze it, keep it, take it out when you head out, boil water, add to bag, eat food, burn plastic bag in the fire. simple! Don't tell Katibug about the bag burning!!! hahahahaha

Hey Jerbear...where you be man!!!

I use the freezer zip locks also.
I use a vaccum sealer for my dehydrated meals and transfer to ziplocks so I can reseal them. I re-use the vaccum bags.

Briar- yep I reuse. Not only because I like to recycle/dislike waste but also cuz I'm penny pincher.

I like the idea of the ez fill bags. Going to try them.

Yep, the Spelling Police are pretty thick through here.

I did have a Ziploc blow out on me once when I tried to heat the food in the bag by placing it in boiling water -- they won't put up with that. Just pouring boiled water into them shouldn't be a problem, though.

I got turned on to the oven bags because that's what the Bakepacker instructions recommend.

Biz is right. I used to be a distribution mamager for a company that made both regular and ziplock bags. If it is made of polyethelyne, there will be no harmful chemicals. The specific bag you are looking for is a 5x8 4mil gusseted ziplock bag. Unfortunately, those are hard to find. You can buy bulk regular ziplock bags at my former competition...........

Good luck
