What wd said. Lots of ways to get up to Shining Rock and back down without retracing your steps. All great hikes. Get the TI map and pick some routes - you can't go wrong.

Pisgah is my old stomps.
The Art Loeb Trail is a great one! South of the Blue Ridge Parkway (BRP) it's nice this time of year, and there's 2 shelters, a loop can be magaged here easy enough. But it's a serious hump up to the BRP to the ridgeline, if you were to do the whole 34 mile ALT. From Sam's Knob parking lot, ya can do a great loop that includes Shining Rock. Quite flat to boot (fer totin' plenty of beer!). Another great loop is outa Camp Daniel Boone (BSA) up NC 215. There's a public parking area just after the lake and main camp center. Caretaker's name is Eddie, wonderful feller, make dang shore you boys don't fark up any of CDB!! Anyway it's a 6 mile ascent to Shining Rock, then it's about 3-4 miles to the base of Cold Mtn, cool route with some very narrow ridgeline. Then it's 6 miles back down to CDB, nice loop. Shining Rock themselves are sweet, take flashlights, as if you climb from the top down toward the left ya can spelunk through a rock maze down in the darkness. If one'a ya is heavy, don't do it. Oh, if ya can do your hike near a full moon, all the better. Hence the name Shining Rock.

Another detail, if ya go on a busy weekend, don't camp directly in Shining Rock Gap, as you'll be fined. I'll look and see whut topo's you'll need. If something suites your fancy, lemme know.
