Need a new 2 man tent
I received several hundred dollars in REI gift cards this year, no I am not trying to sell(scam) them. Need your advice on a new tent. Lightweight 2-man, the catch is that REI has to sell it or at least be able to special order it. I am leaning toward the SD clip flashlight, or the Zoid 1.5, any thoughts weight is very important. I also want to check out this new REI Coupe tent.
Another thing, I DO NOT WANT A TARP, I need a tent. That said, I am also going to get a siltarp for a cooking/gear rain shelter probably a 5x8 that I will eventually try to sleep under. Is 5x8 big enough?

I just acquired the...
MH trilight 1. They also make a tri light 2. GREAT tents...free standing and the lightest tents in that class.

The new stuff coming out from MH will not be free standing.

Ifn, I was you and Im not, I'd be looking for closeout on the tri light 2.

If your interested in the trilight 2, I found a store that has it for $276. the regular price was $345. The store is the Summit Hutt 1-800-499-8696, ask for Lance.

If they are sold out, try Idaho Mountain Touring at 1-208-336-3854. this is where I got my TL1. they had the TL2 for $269.

Good luck...for my tastes, I like a free stander...

REI halfdome plus
5 lbs (with footprint % hardware) ample room for 2 people, 2 vestibules, 2 doors, head room. around $150. I love mine and have used it without a leak for 2 years. This could save you money to buy some other things.

Here's my vote for the Clip Flashlight 2. If you want it to really be a 2 man, get the Clip Flashlight 3. A little heavier, but there's actually room for 2 people in it.

the light wedge 2
i am hoping they will have some type of closeout on the mh light wedge 2 soon. i really like this tent and my current two person 3 season is getting tired.

No thanks SG i think I need that new tent smell. Nothing personel. Do you like your Clip? It is the tent that I am leaning towards. I wish the other manufactures would get there butts in gear and get the '03's out on the market. Geeze the car people are already talking about 04's.

Yes, I like my Clip. I think I'll exchange the 2-man for the 1-man. Should be able to get a deal on a 2002 model.

rei-outlet has a great one day deal on the Marmot Hardshell.

I really don't need a new tent, I really don't need a new tent, I really don't need a new tent...

I have the Marmot Nutshell. Basically the same tent with a mesh ceiling. Plenty of headroom, I really like it. The only other free-standing 2 person tent I've had that had more headroom was the REI Halfdome.

SG, Campmor has the 2001 Sierra Designs Light Year for $129.96 right now. They also have the 2002, but it's $149.

I got a Tri-light one man when they first came out. Set it up in the yard for a test. I found that after staking and guying it out, the center pole bowed and snapped back and forth when I shook the tent to simulate high winds. I also did not like the door zipper set up. Waaaay to tight. My 2cents.

Hope the new MH line has found the perfect design that end my quest for the PERFECT tent for me.

I'd also stay away from the 01 SD Light Year. I had one and took it back. Water pooled at the foot end of the fly. Minor problem to modify. The 02 model has a fly seam change that fixes the pooling problem.

Yes, I've used it as a 2-person tent. The packs went on a tree with pack-covers. You have to be really good friends with your tent-mate, it's a close fit ; ) . Also, that vestibule is so small it's useless for anything other than boots. Mine is usually used as a one-person tent.

I was wondering what the difference was between the 2001 and 2002. Might have to wait a bit on the 2002, see if the price comes down any.

BTW, Troll420 is correct. Look at the features that people describe, decide what you want, and then get the tent that has the features you want.

When I got the Nutshell, I was looking for a free-standing 2 person tent that had plenty of headroom, plenty of ventillation (mesh ceiling, also nice for setting it up without the fly in the summer), could be fast-packed (set up with just the fly and footprint), under 5lbs, and under $200 dollars. It happened to fit those requirements nicely. It has some other bells and whistles I like also, like interior hanging loops and reflective tape so I can find it in the dark, among others. I only intended to use it as a one-person tent so I was actually looking for a minimal vestibule to save weight.

You're only going to be happy with it if it suites you.

on the tri light...
im surprised that there isn't a velcro wrap on the fly to attatch to the center pole...I can see where that would allow the center pole to possible shift. BUT...I think the plusses totally outweigh the negatives....we'll see...I saw it, got it, now have to live with it.

And Lizs...no, your not a guest...we both have tents for "US"...Its a shame that they aren't a bit lighter though...hmmmmthe trilight 2 is only 269....no...no more tents, no more tents...no more tents...say it with me people...I need your help, please...the dark side is strong.

Hey the REI site is down they are adding alot of new 2003 stuff. Man my pockets are on fire with these gift cards burning a hole in them. I won't even be able to use this twnt until April, got to have a new tent, I need a new tent. LOL
A gift card is almost worse than just having money set aside descions, descions.

I called MH right after I got it about the velcro tabs to hold the fly steady. I think they wanted 25 bucs to it. Also any modification would void the warranty.
The zipper issue is why I returned it.

Sierra Designs Clip Flashlight!
My favorite of all two man tents I've seen, carried or actually used.

4.5 lbs total carry weight
32 ft^2 fits two people just fine.
Held up on windy trips to Mt. Whitney and Long's Peak.
Excellent Price - I think the REI has their own version of it (mfg by SD) for a few bucks less.

I guess if you try to cram two 6 footers and their 6000 cubic inch packpacks inside it might be a bit tight!

I have used this tent but have never owned one. I think it is a badass tent. I would only suggest SD make the vestibule a little bigger to accomodate two packs. If this were done, it would be the ultimate tent. And the price can't be beat. I would recommend this tent to anyone as I've rarely read anything bad about it other than a lack of storage space.

I went to REI for an Arizona Trail presentation last night, and saw a new tent, the "REI Roadster." Sales guy said packed weight is 3 pounds 3 oz. It looks very nice, not so sure about the guy string tightening system, it looks kind of light, but that's the only thing I can see questionable on it.

Anyone else seen this one?
