It is raining in Memphis and has been since 4 AM. Temps expected to plunge this afternoon resulting in another of our famous "ice storms". The last major ice storm in '93 left us paralyzed for about a week.

Advised by wife we have over 1/2 inch in Franklin, TN already and really coming down. I'm supposed to be getting into the GSMNP backcountry on a BP tomorrow, we're calling rangers to find out if they're going to be closing the gates around Townsend. Snowed in isn't as big a worry now as snowed out. May have to find an alternate. Spent last night seam-sealing I need to hike.

President of the Division just came down and asked if we should close the office at 1...

I told him that would be a smart move for liability purposes! Boy I love soft and easy questions like that.

I am sitting here looking at the TDOT live cams on the interstate. It looks more like a parking lot. Guess I will stay here until those who left work early get off the road. There is so much traffic they cannot even get the trucks on the road to kinda clean them off.

This is great, just great. Take a look at this, see the 35F isotherm? It's passing right through Huntsville, which means we get cold rain. Now see Nashville? Well north of the 30 isotherm. Lucky bastards...

Maybe tonight...

We drive bad cause we ain't prepared fer it. Plus we got the hills on the East side. It was alot easier driving in Ohio - at least they gots plenty of salt, plows, and flat, flat, flat roads.

Smokygirl, there is nothing better than trying to stop for a red light at the top of a snow covered hill and then slide right back down it. I have done that many times.
Nashville is like Knoxville, we have no equipment to get it off the roads except for the salt trucks with the scrapers on them.

LOL!! that's skeery! My little rear-wheel pick-up truck is a death trap. I got tube sand on the wheel wells, but how good does that do? I will probably have to walk to my house tonight on the way home from work. I might not be able to get up that hill - and have slid back down just as you described!!

Doesn't everyone in the south make french toast when it snows?

No snow in the immediate forecast for NH. It's warming up here...-9 degrees F here at 7 AM today. Yesterday it was -14 at 7 AM. At least the cold weather is allowing the snow from the two big snow storms we've had this year stick around. The ski areas are loving it.

Enjoy the snow while you can. Stay safe.

snow in TN
I live in Spring Hill, TN and its pretty messy here. Wife and son just got home from Franklin it took them over an hour. All the Yankees at work (Saturn) laughed at us when they first came down here, but now they realize what a predicament we can get in down here. Very limited snow removal equipment and what we have is stuck in traffic right now. All these hills and small mountains on the eastern and western highland rim get treacherous. I wish yall good luck this weekend, I'll wait till Sun/Mon to go hiking after the roads are clear but before the snow melts.

Don't laugh too quick, we had an Ice/sleet storm in '85 and I got 18 inches at my place on the TN/ALA line. Well they did have to call out the guard to clear the streets, didn't work for a week and had no electricity for 8 days. People froze to death!!! Hope we never get it that bad again. I'll take the snow over ice any day.

This all remains so bizarre. Here in the Northwoods it is sunny and clear, temp in upper teens with a brisk breeze for a good wind chill, but no significant snow for weeks (a couple dustings have been it). How much snow in northern Wisconsin? I could still go out and rake the leaves in the backyard if I wasn't so dang lazy about yard work. It looks like October.

The high pressure arctic air mass that has us cold and clear is pushing that snow storm down to you folks in the mid-south. Enjoy!
