Interest to returning to the Cove in spring was expressed on the OM thread, so I thought start an official trip thread.

Someone suggested during a full moon; that's near the weekend of March 14-16 (still winter, but hey).

So, who wants to go and are there any other date suggestions?

What Route?
I'm in the planning stage for this hike.
Looks like I've got about 650 miles to drive from MS.
Once I get to Greenville, SC, what's the best route to drive to Lost Cove?
StoveStomper

From Greenville you can take US-25 to I-26, then head east on I-40 to US-221 which goes to Linville.

Or you can stay on I-85 thru Spartanburg and get on US-221.

A few more questions.....
Is state hyway 25 from Greenville to Hendersonville limited access? Are there lots of red lights or is it like an interstate hyway?

Where 221 meets the Blue Ridge Parkway, do you turn North onto the BRP?

Looks like me and the kids will sleep at the trailhead Friday night. We'll swagger into camp around 8 a.m. Sat...

That's Spring Break week (4/7-11) for me.

Anyone wanna stay awhile longer?
Mebbe do another hike in the area?

Last year's hike out was pure misery - I enjoyed that hike more than any other... ever!

i would get to asheville on 1-26 and then hit the blue ridge parkway north from there if it were my first time going and time was a factor.
(i prefer the backroads to interstate travel...but..i usually drag into camp at all hours because of my meandering)
om

3/13/03

just remember that if you go too far north on BRP stop at the Linn Cove Viaduct Visitor's Center, turn around and go south 3.5 miles then hang a left

If take the US-25 bypass, called White Horse Road (you acn take I-185 to this road and cut a few miles), in the Greenville area there are lots of lights. But once north of town it becomes a less traveled road with parts being limited access.

If you want to miss all lights, do as om said and take I-85 to I-26 to I-40.

Yes, go north on BRP from the US-221 the intersection located south of Linville (they intersect again north of Linville, so you'd head south from that point). The link you posted early gives direction from there. But if you need more help just ask.

cabana man is great. We could call him roots now. He did the bleach thing. Yuck! He is most likely coming with us. The original roots who I'm now calling bushmaster may join us as well. He's doing his best to look like Jim Morrison;o) The girl is way too preggers to join us and she'd kill Tommy if he went without her. He has threatened to though! LOL Can't wait to see you! Namaste

hey skiracer!....i am sorry you are sooooo far away!!
my most vivid recollection of the first lost cove trip was when you stood up and asked everyone around the fire to talk about themselves....yikes...it was my second ever ECT trip....and i thought to myself ..."geez...what's up with this boyscout?'....heh....it was really neat tho...
the second thing was watching the popcorn fiasco...hee hee~~~~~

walkindude....no one has addressed your question!!
i will try...heh assuming you have the wilson creek map:
you go up the blue ridge parkway north
of asheville until you get to state road 1511, it goes right along "rattlesnake cliffs" (dig it..whats up with rattlesnake..heh) and you keep going down on the gravel road till you pass some houses at Roseborough which has no sign to tell you that you are there. go a little further to the next P sign on the map, there is a bridge there and the trailhead(s) are up to the right.
there is a shorter way in for those that may be getting there later, but the last time i tried it at night, i got into the wilson creek area at midnight and walked into camp around
seven am...heh...so, maybe someone else can tell ya that way.

yo....whoevah....is that pretty much the way to go?

it will be so fine to see you out there again!....what day are you aiming to arrive?

walkindude
here is the email from Ghost that told where we would be camping at:

If you haven\'t read the thread on the trip page, the map you need is the Wilson Creek Area Trail Map put out by the U.S. Forest Service. If your local map source doesn\'t carry it, you can pick one up at area ranger stations or outfitters, or order online from:

http://www.cradleofforestry.com/store/c2.html

Lost Cove is located between the communities of Linville and Edgemont. Both of which should appear on an NC road map, and on the trail map as well.

The Lost Cove Trail is no. 262 on the trail map. The main access points are at the parking area just south of Roseborough from the north, and using the Hunt Fish Falls Trail (no. 263) from the south. The campsite is located on the Lost Cove Trail between its junction with the Hunt Fish Falls Trail and its southern junction with the Timber Ridge Trail (no. 261). It\'s a flat area in a large grove of Hemlocks (or some sort of large evergreen) between the trail and Lost Cove Creek.
