34?! Ouch. Supposed to be 70+ here today - actually may set some temp records for this date.

Got my number in the mail for the 3/21 race - guess that means I have to run it, huh?

All this training is starting to pay off...

Ran another 5K Race Saturday, and ran my best ever, by 1 1/2 minutes. I'm actually getting in there with the runners now, lol.

Ran my long run yesterday in strong winds, 12 miles this time, slower than last weekend, 2 1/4 hours (ouch). It was hard to complete.

Question fot the guys: Is it a normal side effect to have pain in the testicles, kinda like having been kicked?

I’ve had foot, achilles, calf, knee, groin, hip, lower back, and shoulder pain from running, but never experienced pain there. Some of the people here with a more substantial running history can hopefully help you better than me.

Le subtil
It's not normal. From the little information you provided, and knowing your history of running, I'd guess Torticolis...although that may be the wrong term because you can also get it in the neck. Or, it could be epididymitis. Either of which I've had, both secondary to running. I don't remember what exactly the who treatment was (medication?), but it did involve not running for awhile. I'd recommend seeing your doc. Good luck. If nothing works, you can always try out for the Soprano's.

Le subtil - bad form to announce a PR without posting the time! :-)

I would say that it sounds like you ran your balls off, but since I agree with the others that you should check with your doc about a possible medical problem, I won't make that joke just yet....

LeSubtil, PR is personal record. BTW congrats on dropping more time.

I have never had the pain that you mentioned, it sounds awful. I hope its nothing serious.

Well, the Maine marathon is off of my schedule. I consulted with my daughter, (the reason I'm doing this in the first place), about which race she wanted to run, and she chose the Chicago Marathon on October 10. So, we are registered and, like has been said above, I guess we gotta run.
This is gonna be Dunadan's big adventure race of 2004.
I will be running a St Patrick's Day 5K on Saturday. I'll let you know my time if it's decent. If it's bad, I'll lie about it.
Congratulations, everyone, on your persistence and good attitude. It helps keep me psyched to read about your accomplishments.

No need to be shy about posting a PR - always remember it's all relative. Even though my 12k time from a few years back sounds fast to some folks around here, it's a joke compared to what my teammates run. Those guys are practically showered, dressed, and halfway home by the time I come in!

Keep those PR's comin', and stay away from the dreaded "PW"....

No, Hubcap, I've never run it before. Are you going to be there? The only marathon I've run is the Wichita Marathon. No matter what the New Yorkers tell you, the Wichita Marathon was the first fully televised marathon. (BTW, the NY marathon was the week after.)
Dunadan

Yes, I will probably do it again this year. I have done it the last two years. Actually, it is the only marathon I have run. I do plan to do one this spring though. I was looking at Grandma's in Duluth, but I should have sent the registration info a while back. Now I'm shooting for the the Chicago Lakeshore marathon at the end of May.

Well, Hubcap, I will wear my Trail Talk tee shirt, and maybe we will see each other in a crowd of thousands. If you want to meet at a certain place, let me know. I will try to refrain from bashing the Illini between now and then.

Hey, Bowlder, ever run the Bay to Breakers? Your "hills of death" run reminds me of my runs above Terra Linda on the open space trails. Killer, but got me in shape for the B to B.

Yeah, Dun, that was the first road race I ever ran - in 1978! They had an "unbelievable" crowd of 12,000 runners. The next year they had the novel idea (perhaps not original, but new to most people) of giving you a t-shirt with your entry. Since then, it's gotten to the point of being dangerous, IMHO. I was able to qualify for the "sub-seeded" division a couple of times - that was pretty cool.

I started running in 1978. following my retirement from the Coast Guard I went back to college. One day I realized I had a running shirt that was older than several of my classmates.

BTW, while skiing yesterday I actually saw mosquitoes.

I did register for the Bay Shore Marathon in Traverse City. I got a book from the library recounting 25 runners' marathon experiences and it scares the he!! outta me.
It's just starting to sink in - what have I gotten myself into?

It'll be my first marathon, in fact, my first race over 5K.
But, I think I might survive it if I can find a way to eat enough food, if I don't bleed to death through my nipples, and my balls don't fall off. LOL.
le Subtil

3/10/04

LeSubtil, look for "Nipguards". Little stick-on rings for your nipples. They work well, or so I've heard at least. My bra prevents that problem. Or, I imagine, you could probably make some from mole-foam.

Nip guards should be just the thing. I could have used them back in the 70's when running in those cold and windy Oklahoma winters.

LeSubtil -

I have no doubt you can make it. Slow the pace, walk if you need to. The goal is to finish. Speed not being a factor, I know I could finish a marathon right now with my present lack of specific training. Run the first mile, walk for 25 miles 385 yards.
You will do it.
Snake Eyes

le Subtil. You're gonna go for it anyway. Why burden yourself with excessive doubt. I have faith that you will do it.
Yeah, Bowlder, I ran it to be able to say I ran it. Besides, it's the biggest party on foot. The year I ran was when the whale, Humphrey, kept swimming up the Bay. Of course, one of the teams was the whale that year. It has to be the race with the most naked people in it. Congratulations on being able to start ahead of the pack. I ran in place for at least five minutes after the starting gun went off.
Dunadan
3:42:40 PM
3/10/04

The last year I ran it I did not have a good race - ran about 2-3 minutes slower than expected (a little under 50 minutes). And I recall lamenting the fact that not one, but two naked guys finished ahead of me. And, yes, I had seen them at the start, so they did indeed run the whole way!

I would have qualified for the 2001 race, too, but had a conflict that weekend, so didn't enter.

LeSubtil, glad to hear you signed up for the bayshore. I wish I could do it with ya...:(. You'll do just fine, slow and steady. If I can run a marathon you can do it. Its certainly not a horrible experience. There are moments of discomfort but not real "pain".

Hey, you crazy runners! I just returned from the Shamrock Shuffle, a 5K run. To preface my time, let me say that I haven't run since Monday because my left knee is bothering me. Even at that I put in a 23:45, which I feel pretty good about.
It's a long time until the marathon, but things aren't looking too bad right now.

I had a self pity party today and no one showed up but me so I decided to punish myself.

I was going biking but it was raining so I decided to go run at the gym. Today for a change I loaded up the nalgene container and strapped it on my back so I could drink while I ran. I figured what the heck I filled it full. A whole gallon of water, well that added 8 lbs to me, see told you I was going to punish myself.
I ended up running my best time ever. I did 7 miles in 67 minutes. The first 4 miles I stayed right at a 9 minute mile which is good for me but I think I lost it on the last 2 miles.

After I did that I jumped straight to the crunches and did 6 sets of 20.

Still not feeling that I had punished myself enough I went home got out the bike and did 10 miles on it(rain had stopped)

I am pooped and now it is time to get ready for work.

Dang, I can't have these self pity parties to often.

Good workout, Ewker.
I ran 8 miles yesterday. My longest training run, so far. It went well, and I felt like I could have put in 13. I am signing up for a half-marathon in May, so I have to continue to get those longer distances in. I just wish my left knee would quit bothering me.

Dunadan, I have the same problem with one of my left knee. I get a little twitch in it or something.

I made it to the gym this morning and did my workout. Normally I walk two laps to unwind a little but today I decided I was going to run a mile. After 2-3 laps the knee had a little pain so I quit. Figured it wasn't worth it. Plus there is always tomorrow.

Managed my 14 mile long run Sunday, in spite of the sleet and wind. 2 1/2 hours even; I still can't get to 10 min miles.

Total last week was 28 miles, a personal record. Also managed to get in an hour of swimming Fri, 4 1/2 hrs of kayaking Sat, and 2 hrs rollerblading Sun night.

The pain is getting more tolerable!
:-)
Sure is nice to have a thread to read about other runners.
