Way to go SG!

Birch and I did 8 yesterday. We started out to do 10 but I felt horrible due to dehydration, german potato salad and 4 hours of shopping with a three year old combo. Still managed to run the first 3 miles at an 8.5 pace which is pretty quick for me.

SG, which 5k are you doing? Date?

Its a run in Sparta on July 17th. I have some friends who built a house there, and was planning to visit them that weekend. Then they told me about the run, so I've decided to do it as well. Should be fun!

Sass, when do you go on days?

The team results are in for that 10k I ran on 5/31. Our masters team (age 40-49 for you newbies) came in second place, as we have for every race so far this season (I think). I didn't even score, though. Our slowest scoring guy ran about 35:30. We also dropped down a few of the old guys to the "open" team (under age 40), but our slowest guy there was just a hair over 40:00. Guess I gotta pick up the pace!

Geez! You old farts are quick.

While running at the gym today,I saw a woman who was probably about 55 or so touch the top of her head to the floor, bent at the waist and feet flat on the floorw/ no hands used for balance! I almost fell off the treadmill!

Whew, I do feel like a slacker around those guys, mapes. But even worse, I wouldn't have even scored on our seniors (50-59 or over) team! Our slowest scoring senior was a guy who is 60 and ran 2 minutes faster than me!

didn't bike this morning (five year old had us up for threehours lsat night)

So I went for my usual loop at lunch. I went out an hour early hoping to beat the heat. Still pretty muggy . . .did the 5 miles in 45 instead of 42:30.

Just plodding along.

You mean they grow track runners up there in MT, too? I ran under 3:40 a few times. Then I had to run another lap to get to the finish of the mile.

I saw the 5k thread mapes - good for you! You'll need to check in on this thread often to make sure your training is on track....

Well I made my 21st consecutive five mile birthday run this morning. The first year was when I turned 30. Today it's 50. I'm half a century old and can still outrun most of you (the ones will really short legs). I am slowing down though. Five miles is also not bad for 7 1/2 months after back surgery. Good day so far.

A friend of mine runs one kilometer for every year of his age on his birthday every year. He's 62 now, so it's getting pretty tough, but he's still doing it....

Bowlderman, I love the kilometer per year thingy. I may have to try it.

I did a nice 6 miler today (48:18) but dang was it hot! 90degrees and wayyyy humid. I did the pre-run and post-run weigh in, just to calculate water loss. 3.5 friggin pounds of water, thats nearly 1/2 gallon. Ugh I got lots of drinking to do. (of course some of that was metabolizing energy but not that much).

yo, im a nooB to the running club... how do yall train up to run that long? I've just started running for maybe 10 minutes a day for the past few weeks and i can see ive improved some, but i dont drink any water or anything or really warmup for that matter... I'm really training for hikes, we have probably about a 1/2 mile trail (basically flat) behind our house that i use to run on... I really need to improve my endurance as much as possible... what's the best way to train up?

Check out Runnersworld.com and look for training and then Hal Higdon's training plan for whatever you want to work on. I'm no expert (started running in January), but followed his plan for a beginner and a half marathon. I ran one a few weeks ago and continue to do at least one 8 mile run a week.

BS, HAPPY BIRTHDAY! =)

Thanks Sass, i was just about to post the same question.

I just started trying to run a little bit every other day, (ride my bike on the other days).

My personal goal is to enter and finish a 5k race either in late summer or early fall AND to enter and finish an off road "mini-triathalon". I think the "mini" version is doable, the running will likely be the hardest part for me. Like I said all I wanna do is finish the thing.

That was my goal with the half marathon, Roam. I did it. Next one my goal is to finish faster and more comfortable. The best part about all the training is hiking's a breeze now.

juztyn1,
If you are just starting to run and want to go for long distances, leave the watch at home. Don't worry about how fast you are going, except maybe a one-day-a-week check.
Run at a comfortable, easy breathing pace.
Allow yourself one hour, and run as far as you can then walk until rested, then run again, then walk, etc. As far as the drinking water, I take a few sips before I run (5 mi.) and don't worry about it.
As far as stretching, do some light stretching before you run, and start out slow and easy. After your run, you need to do a little more intensive stretching to help stave off some of the sore muscles.
The biggest thing is to set up 3 to 5 days a week and keep to the schedule.
The best time for success is to do your run first thing in the morning.
Happy trails!

Uuuuugh, two days running this week I've had trouble getting to sleep at night and missed my alarm in the morning. No run for Shanedog or me!!! It's ruining my day!

I guess my point is that at first it seems like a chore. Keep it up and eventually it feels as if your day is not complete without a run... Good luck all.

I recovered enought from the marathon two weeks ago to run a few miles last week. Saturday there was a 5K race in our hometown (Midland Community Dow Run) that we couldn't resist. I thought I'd run it slow and easy, but at the starting line I changed my plan and ran it. Took 1:02 off my PR for a 24:41

This was the best organized race I'e been to yet. Big expo, free massages. a good band; Empty Pockets, got my BP and body mass checked (13%), and lots of freebies. I also ran with 4 friends which made it a lot better.

Y'all ain't kidding about the heat. I started running at dawn to avoid the worst of it.

Birch - how about that Detroit Marathon???

IT'S SOOO HOT

this was the first morning that I felt the heat. I have been lucky up to this point. I run along side the Hudson River and that has been giving me some breeze.

But I think that may be over :(

I found that I don't drink (always been my personal problem even when I hike)enough water. I do stop at some point and drink. but then when I get going OUCH I can feel the water.

cramps:
after I run I will walk for a few blocks to cool down. My problem is that as the day goes on I develope cramps and get pretty sore. I try not to take Advil but sometimes I need it.
Any suggestions?

I have 16 weeks till my first 5K :)

Mapes ..

Drink first. Not during. Unless you are going out for more than 45 minutes (or if its blistering hot).

YOu are probably cramping from dehydration. lack of potassium. Or both.

Drink water. Eat bananas.

I would recommend a hydration/sports drink. But unless you are really working for 45 minutes or so you will end up drinking more calories than you burn.

The "water gives me cramps" thing is an old gym teachers myth.

It would probably be more comfortable for you to drink plenty of fluids, but have your last drink about a half hour or so before you start running (that works for me anyway). Also, avoid chugging whatever the drink is - I don't think there's any medical reason to do as I say, but it seems like you won't get that sloshing around this way.

New 10K World Record
Ethiopian Kenenisa Bekele broke the 10,000 meter record yesterday in an IAAF meet in the Czech Republic-- 26:20!!That's a little over 4:14 per mile for 6.2 miles!

See what happens when you make your kids run 10 miles to school every day, barefoot?

(He set the 5K record too, 9 days before at 12:37-- that's 4:04/mile)

I was not quite to 4 miles in my recent 10k at 26:20. So if my 10k was on a track, that guy would have lapped me about 9 times. On the plus side, I may have gotten to finish with him, as I would have just been finishing my 16th lap as he finished his 25th!

Maple, it depends on your skill/experience level. Your norm is your own and for sure don't try to look at the world record type folks!
Roam Around
10:15:23 AM
6/09/04

It dosen't matter, Maple; you'll benefit from the length of time you're out there, not how fast. I used to race at 4:45-5:00 per mile for 5K-10K but now I trundle along at 7:00-8:00 miles most days and feel pretty good.

You burn off about 110-120 calories per mile regardless of pace, too.
aero
10:19:54 AM
6/09/04

When I started running track as a grownup (back in '87), I picked the mile because I calculated that, at my goal time of 5:00, the world record holder (at the time) wouldn't be able to lap me. No longer true, but, then again, I can't run under 5 any more, either. Then, it turned out I did pretty well at that distance. They always say milers require good ability at both endurance and speed. But for me, it worked well because I had neither: I was lousy at longer distances because I had no endurance and lousy at shorter distances because I had no speed. So the mile was perfect for me! :-)

Maple, are you stretching before/during/after you run? I know that I don't get nearly as sore if I make sure I stretch very well after I run. And, drinking plenty of fluids flushes the toxins that get created in your muscles when you use them. So make sure you do both!
