So, it is better to run five miles one day a week or one mile five days a week?

"ok so how do I sooth my aching musles after I jog?
mapleleaf"

Mapleleaf I'm new to this myself so take my advice with a grain of salt...
I find if I cool my legs down real soon after a long run the pain is always less. The garden hose works good as did the pool before it warmed up. Something I read in a book that seems to work for me.

OK, so now we can expect to see maple out in front of her office building in New York City hosing off her legs before work - cool!

Eleven miles of hell yesterday. 90 degrees and humid, but those will be the normal training conditions for yours truly until the end of the summer. Can't wait for the 100's.
Keep on rockin' everyone.

Right there with you Dun. You're more of a man than me though, I went back to the treadmill.

Dhutch, sheesh, I think my head just expanded. Now I have to buy new hats! ;)

Maple, You ROCK woman! Keep it up. (I won't lie to you and tell you it gets easier because I'm not convinced yet it does ever....but other stuff gets easier, like hiking and buttoning my pants, lol)

Went to the track for a workout last night. This was my third track workout since starting them up again. I had run the "Hills of Severe Pain" 10k loop the day before, so I was a little pooped, but did a good workout anyway. I ran at a high school not too far from my office, where they have a gorgeous all-weather track (with a fancy artificial turf field - great to lie on for stretching: no itching!) in a beautiful setting. This is where I saw young miler phenom Alan Webb a few years back, only a couple weeks after he broke Jim Ryun's high school mile record.

Anyway, I wanted to do some 600s, and decided I would do 4 of them, then 2 400s, then a couple of 200s. I wore my HR monitor to collect some data; maybe see what kind of shape I'm in.

So I did the 600s in remarkably similar times - my average was 2:09.5, with the slowest at 2:09.8 and the fastest at 2:09.1. The first 400 was :80.4, but then I pooped out and ran an 84 flat. My 200 was 38 flat, and I stopped at that point. What I look for in my HRs is the rate at the end of the rest period (I was walking and jogging for 2:00 in between). If it stays the same or goes up just a little on each successive interval, you're in decent overall condition. If you reach a point where it jumps up and just won't come down within the rest period, you're not in super condition or you just ran the work intervals way too hard. Here are my HRs at the end of the rests: 139, 140, 141, 142, 138, 141. So I'm pleased with that. The times on the 6s and 4s are kind of irrelevant right now - it's hard to believe I would probably want to quit a workout if I ran over 2:00 for a 600 before my injuries! But that will come back to some degree with time and hard work. Anyway, it was fun!

Per yalls advice, I did my first 30 minute run (ok run/walk) this morning. 5 minute warmup, pretty much went, run around the track, walk around the track, run, walk, etc... (a somewhat wide circular trail in our woods behind the house about 1/3 to 1/2 mile long probably). Went by faster than I thought. I actually feel a lot better at work today too... hopefully I can keep it up.

Ran 12 minutes yesterday. Today, I ran 10, took a 3-minute walk break, and then ran another 12. Last 30 seconds was a sprint. I about killed myself. But, I feel great! Lifted some weights afterword too, and some crunches. I had promised myself that I'd lose 20 lbs by July, but that ain't gonna happen. I'll just do the best I can.

Wow, lots of sweatin' goin' on around here!

I did the "hills of severe pain" 10k loop yesterday after work. We're having some warm weather right now - about 80 - so I may reintroduce the frozen hat technique. Heading to the track after work today - not sure what I'll do just yet....

BTW, tipped the scales at 152 this morning - that's 23 pounds under my max weight of about a year and a half ago....

I love to hear how much fun everyone is having with their running and excercise, good job all!

Tonite was THE PERFECT running night. Low to mid 70's and low humidity, nice breeze and moderate clouds. Did 6 with the dogs and my daughter in the stroller. We counted dogs we saw, counting ours we saw 18. I love having her with me when I run. We actually get some great conversations going (great by 3 year old standards). Ran it in 48:17. 6 Miles is really a fun distance, a good workout but never so long as to get boring.

I did my interval workout again tonight. I was running down the drainage canal bank (this area used to be Everglades before it was residential) and almost stepped on a snake. Non poisonous, but it was as startled as I was, he didn't move till my foot was on the downstroke!

I have yet to get my speed up. I can run forever but just can't seem to go faster than a 9:30 pace (unless I only run a mile or two). Oh well. I hope it'll improve with lots of practice, if not I'll just keep trotting along.

My trip to the track was a bust - the dang kids were havin' some kind of graduation practice. The nerve!

So I did 3x1-mile on the marked course around the lake. That was a bust, too. First one in 6:14, but that toasted me. #2 in 6:39 and #3 in 6:53. Ugh. Oh, well....

well I went running by my house.
it was great. at 5:30 am it was cooler. it was also cooler with all the trees in the park. So I will continue to jog there in the AM

but i have a big concern. unlike my jog to work, this is a park and not many people there that early in the morning. I love to wear headphones but have a big big fear of not hearing anyone behind me. With the latest murder in NYC, they are suggesting joggers not war headphones.

i just worry about my safty, I have never heard of anything other then the lady killing the ducks in the park.
I will keep alert!

Mapes! You must be careful! I recommend against the headphones if at all possible. Also, if you can, try to find a buddy to run with. I would be leary about the pepper spray idea because it could be used against you. Have you ever seen those little alarm thingies? It's like carrying a car alarm. There's a little pin that you pull out in an emergency that activates a really loud piercing alarm. I think there's a way to attach it to yourself so that if you get knocked down, it goes off. Also, if someone approaches you who actually doesn't intend to harm you, you won't hurt them with the alarm.

Anywho, I surpassed 20,000 crunches today at the gym! It took me about 13-1/2 months to do it, but there you have it. Abs of steel, baby!
BowlderMan
4:16:05 PM
6/16/04

thats a lot of crunchin!

The alarm thing sounds like a good idea, it would suck to have your own spray turned on you AND get mugged or stabbed or something at the same time.

Be careful Maple, just common sense is hopefully all you need.

All I gotta keep my eyes open for are various types of reptiles along the canals where I've been running. Almost stepped on a snake yesterday, today was reptile free however. I did see this really ugle bird, looked like an Ibis, only black, that was hunting, same spot as yesterday. Hoping I get to see him catch something someday.

I Rock!!
Been doing a lot (more) running lately. On Mackinac Island, G and I had a terrific run up and down several hills and to a "cottage" on the West Bluff (9 bedroom, 6 1/2 bath, pool outside). Even improved my agility by dodging the horse poop along the way. We did have to run/walk a lot, but the total mileage that morning was darn close to 2 miles. My pace improved also.

Last night, G took me out again, and I ran 27 minutes without stopping, at a pretty decent pace again. I'm guessing mileage was around 2.5, give or take. Well on my way to kicking my first 5K in the ass!!

Way to go, smiley! Just keep adding onto that mileage a little at a time - sounds like you're a natural!

Did anyone else see Alan Webb's mile race at the Prefontaine meet? His goal was rumored to be sub 3:50, although he publicly stated he just wanted to win. He's the kid that broke Ryun's high school record a few years ago (and I met him a few weeks after he did it!), then promptly disappeared from the scene. I pronounced him "done" for good. So now he lowered his 1500 PR by about 10 seconds over the last 2 months and has the best time in the world so far this year at 3:32. In the Prefontaine meet race, he had a couple of rabbits and hit the 1320 at about 2:50. But he tied up some and ran "only" a 3:50.85. Oh, by the way, that happens to be the fastest time ever by an American on American soil. Who's record did he break? Ryun's, of course, set in 1967!

He kicked my ass last night!
We headed out for a 15 minute run, since that's all the dinner simmering on the stove would allow. G made me run a pretty fast pace, and I kept up for the first 1/2 mile. Towards the end of the 2nd half mile, I started to wheeze and panic. Eventually I calmed down and started to breath normally again.

Pathman, yeah, some of the other Michigan Mountaineers have been really successful in their non-smoking days. I'm really proud of them. :)

On my run this morning, Shane and I were north of town and I spotted movement, not a cat, skunk or ground hog. It was a fox! Cool. She (?) just watched us run by. Shane wanted to go play with it. There was a dead something dangling from her mouth.
