North of town where? Along Pontiac Trail? Up by the John Deere dealer? G's parents live just north of there. Cool!

I don't know why but I find the same thing. The first mile is a b1tch! Maybe it's because your body has to warm up. Once you break that mile, the rythm starts to flow.

No smiley. On my way home heading south along Pontiac Trail past the high school. I drive home past your parents every day though.

When I lived south of town there was a fox on the property and I once saw a coyote. Rare but...there.

You MI chicks will be surprised to hear there's a red fox preserve in Westland, right by the mall. It's that Holiday park. Every once in awhile I'll see a bit of reddish brown fur at the side of the road where another one bit the dust. It sucks it's such a busy area.

I have another killer cold ala' Abby. I'm still running today. My Dr. (who is an avid runner) says to run through whatever I can. He's a saditict b@stard. ;)

The third mile is where I always struggle. Every single time. I always know about how far I've gone.

Someone in my neighborhood told me there was a fox running around and to keep an eye on small animals. Don't know if its just a rumor or not.

Any ass-kickin' tonight ("last night", by the time you read this, you eastern time zoner) smiley?

I kicked a little at the track after work today. I thought I would go back to my standard "What kinda shape am I in?" workout: 8 x 400, starting one every 3:00. Last time I did this was a couple months ago (?), and I was very pleased that I averaged about 84 seconds. Tonight I averaged 82, which is a great improvement! Actually, my average was 81.995, but who's counting. I just kept thinking that I wish I could tell that Alan Webb dude he's gonna hafta do a lot better than 60 seconds on his final lap if he wants to compete with the big boys....

Bowlderman, that makes me wanna puke. I tried track one year to get in shape for football. I was too slow for any event, ended up running the 2 mile and coming in last every meet.

Ha, I did a 3 mile run this morning interspersed with 4 2 minute accelerations. I want to run a faster pace in my upcoming off road tri.

In high school I ran the 100, 220 and both corresponding relays as the anchor. It's funny, even then I abhorred the long slow distance, now I do 13 hour races. (not all running though) lol

Hey BowlderMan, no ass-kicking yesterday. I had class last night, and then was happily asleep by 9:30PM. Its been a pretty busy week already! Hopefully the thunderstorms will hold off a bit tonight so we can get a run in. :)

Nasty.

Yesterday I started adding a shorter, faster day to my runs. I only did three miles and made sure that I sped up considerably for quarter miles (from 10 min pace to 8 to 7:30) at a time, several times. My time for the run ended up being 25:something.

Hey pathman, I'm kind of the same way. They say to excel in the mile you have to have a combination of good speed and good endurance. But I did well in it (as a grownup) because I had neither - too slow for the shorter races and not strong enough for the longer ones! Earlier, in high school, I set what probably still stands as the worst running career in the county - maybe the state! - by finishing last place 19 times over two seasons of track & field. But I had fun!

Finally, a good friend who was a 4:25 miler in high school told me his coach always told them not to worry if they felt like collapsing during workouts or races: "You'll faint before you die!"

You did the right thing, Lyra. Only the real hard-core runners let everyone else see what their diet consists of.
Hey, ya freaks! I'm back! I did eleven last night. However, my right calf is really bugging the holy crap out of me. It just feels like it goes very tight. No amount of stretching or heat/cold seems to do anything about it. Pulled hamstring? When I started running, I felt like a well-oiled machine. At about mile six, SPROING!!!!, the right calf spoke up and I was forced to listen. However, being one of the mindless hard-cores, I finished the eleven. I had to walk for a half mile twice. This is cramping my style, if you know what I mean.
I have noticed that, ever since I passed 45 or so, that the little nagging injuries keep coming up.
Well, we shall rock on, shan't we?

Two more runs over the weekend. Went Friday by myself, 24 minutes. First 10 were easy, it was a little challenging after that. Last night G and I did 23 minutes, but my pace remained pretty steady the whole time. Took a detour though a school playground, which was kinda fun. G played on the monkey bars and hop-scotched while I kept on going. He can run longer than me, but I kick his ass when it comes to the ab workout after running. :))

SG, I went running at rotary park today (6 mile and Hubbard). There's a nice 1.1 mile loop on gentle trails, wide enouh for two. It gets a bit hard to follow at some points but they've added a few more blazes (I'd like to bring my own blue paint and add some more!) and after you wander around for an extra .2 miles the first loop you figure it out. You and Gordie might like it there. The trails are wide enough for two and it's a clean park.

Hey runners -

I find that my achilles tendon and calf on my right leg tighten up lately while I run. They don't bother me much after, but its somewhat uncomfortable while I'm running. I stretch before I run (although I haven't been warming up before I stretch) and I stretch after, and sometimes during my run. Any advice??

Dhutch - I'll let ya know if we make plans to get out there. I kinda hate the thought of fighting the afternoon traffic to get out there, though. That's what's been detering me.

Dunadan, I thought maybe it was an "overuse" thing, but since I run less than 3 miles a day, 3-4 days a week, I doubt its that! Let's hope others chime in here.

I think amputation is the only answer.

Well, not really. Stretching is probably good - just don't stretch when your muscles are cold/not warmed up. If you have pain, you should ice a bit after. If it continues, it might be a shoe issue.

Do you run on a road with a cross-slope? Always on the same side?
BowlderMan

to echo bowlder

1) stretch after well. Long holds 30 seconds or more (i actually keep my eye on a stopwatch to be sure I am holding my stretch long enough)

2) shoes. Are you running in old shoes?

As stated by others, stretching afterwards is more important than before. Hosing down your legs with cold water afterwards is also good--in addition to ice. if you can.

Mornin all. I just started running. I have never really ranmy whole life, and the last 5 months I've started running. I am only up to 2 1/2 miles a day 3 times a week. Is that a good place to be for just starting to run? I really need to train to climb Whitney this winter, and a friend told me that I need to start running 5 miles a day if I am going to make it.

Hasher describe themselves as "drinkers with a running problem". One DC club runs in Red dresses, Male & female:

Hashing is a tradition born in 1938 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia and it thrives today all over the world. The group takes its name from a roadside stall called the Hash House (its culinary specialty) where the run ended.
The run is set by a "hare" using flour to mark a 4-6 mile trail. It can go anywhere; city streets, hotels, public buildings, Metro, swamps, fields, streams, mountains, woods, etc. Periodically, the trail ends and the runners or "hounds" try to find where it begins again. The only rule in Hashing is that there are none...but fast runners often run very fast in the wrong direction while the slower runners or walkers catch up. During the run the pack communicates by yelling "On On" when they see flour. Experienced runners mark the trail for those who are behind, so that all make it to the finish. After the run, the group convenes for food, drink and socializing.

The starting place for the DC Hash House Harriettes and Harriers (DCH4) changes weekly, but is usually within reach of the Beltway. We run Saturday afternoon, September to May, and Tuesday evenings during the summer.

Our members are a varied group from all walks of life with a common interest in exercise and fun. Founded in 1978 and have alumni running all over the wo

I should add you don't have to drink but it's waiting for you at the end, with soft drinks, water. anything you don't finish you toss over your head. The also Haze the hell out of everyone, especially newbies and everyone is given some kind of perverted club name.

My shoes are pretty new - but they are trail runners. I'm in love with them. I did switch to my running shoes once and had a lot more pain in them.

BowlderMan, we take a different route every day. It 99% road running, but some is asphalt, some concrete, and not always on the same side of the road. But maybe I should pay more attention to that. The last two times we went out we ran through a school playground and a grassy park.

If it bugs me again today, I'll ice it down.

lyra

smiley, if it really begins to hurt, you may have a touch of tendonitis. If that is the case, take it easy with the stretching since that can actually aggravate it. Based on what you described though, continued stretching is probably ok. Supplement it with the icing everyone suggests and don’t try to increase your speed or mileage much until it is better. Easing back on your mileage may be the only way to get over it.

Dunadan, to the glue factory with you. Really, cut back, you have plenty of time before Chicago.

SG, maybe you might need some more recovery time (every-other day runs?) between runs. Work your way up to everyday slower maybe? Just guessing though.

Bearmagnet, that sounds like a blast! I'd love to do it. Wonder if there's any such thing in the Detroit area?

HELP!!
Ok, my first 5K is scheduled one week from this Saturday. I hate running. It sucks. Or, at least that's how I've felt the last few times I've run, I think mostly because its been hotter than what I've been used to. I haven't run in about 4 days, and I don't have much interest in doing so! (Why the heck did I want to run one of these things anyway????)

I know I'll be able to run it all on race day, even though I've yet to run more than 2.5 miles at any one time. It'll suck, but I can do it. I think after that race, though, I may no longer be allowed as a member of the TT running club!
