Great Job Bowlderman!

Smiley, I wont run in the humidity (have had 2 heat strokes, NOT fun at all) . Its like breathing through a wet washcloth.

Good, maybe I can use that for ammunition against G. He kept pushing me on, saying I'll only get better if I keep going. Its seriously not worth hurting myself over it!!

I think it'll cool off enough tonight for a nice run. Should be nice the rest of the week too!

It was 88 and humid yesterday, and is going to be 88 and humid again today. Power is out at work from storms last night, so no AC here. But, lucky for us, there is a generator that powers the computers and a few lights so we can all work!! YIppee!!!

YOu know, 75-80 all the time would be perfect for me. I wouldn't care if it ever got warmer than that.

Not sure if we're going to run the 5K on Sept. 11th now. I'm kinda bummed that the plans are changing, so I'll have to find another race that month.

Question
OK, so I have started running again but am experiencing a problem. I start to get cramps after about 1/2 a mile in making it impossible to continue until they disappear.

I want to say someone told me this was due to a lack of potassium in your diet.

Any truth to this?

I was getting those for a while, WK. If it's what I had (just below the rib cage), it can be caused by food or by breathing too heavy. I have a couple books that basically just say to slow down. Here's what RunnersWorld has to say. I found the heavy exhaling thing to work pretty good. I also found that, in general, it meant I was pushing myself too hard. So, I would shorten my distance or my pace.

Good Job BowlderMan!

It was raining at the start and it diminished to sprinkles by the end.

The whole race was off-road on trails, the Potowatamie trail if I remember right. It was fairly hilly, for around here.

Potassium deficiency and dehydration can definitely cause leg cramps, but generally not side stitchs. The breathing technique tarabull mentions above has always worked for me when I feel one coming on.

Hey, hey. Let me sneak in here to assure everyone that I'm still running. I have had every nagging injury imaginable, but I'm still training. Riding bike, weights, and sit-ups have come in handy when I can't put in the miles. At this rate, I don't know whether I will be ready in October or not. Time will tell.
Great pictures! It's inspirational to see everyone kickin' butt.

What, did everyone stop running or something?! No action on this thread for too long!

I'm toying with the idea of doing a marathon. I know, I know, I vowed in 1987 to never do another one, but I'm kinda gettin' the bug. I'm looking at the Cal International in Sacramento in December. It would, coincidentally, be almost 20 years to the day after my first marathon. That one was freakishly easy - I clocked a 3:19 even though I logged 32 miles in my biggest week, with a long training run of 14 miles. It was the '87 one that killed me....

I figured out that I could get in decent enough training mileage if I get going as soon as I get back from vacation. I'm thinking I'll hit the road for a couple weeks and see how it goes....

Bowlderman, I am still running strong. Moderate miles 25-28 or so per week. I basically cut my long run back. I am not training for anything (except an 8 hour adventure race in december) so its about fun miles. I have really been loving the cool weather though. I cant recall an August where I could run at 4pm and be comfy. I have actually gotten some faster runs in (for me anyway). I did a 5 miler in 38min even. Not lightening but for me its quick enough. I was toying with a marathon in Oct. but I really dont want to commit myself to that type of work. As it is I am on track to beat last years total mileage by at least 200 barring injury of course. I will prolly turn it up come new year. I find that its a great way to get through those long gray nights, a long running on my hamster wheel. I need to replace the chest transmitter on my HRM. I seem to have lost it at the trail marathon in april. I know I am making marked improvements my HR during a typical 5mile treadmill run was 136 which is low so its time to speed it up I geuss.

Still running here....usually 4-5 days a week, depending on softball games...generally only run about 2-3 miles a day, but hey at least I'm running again!

Sounds good, birch! I started thinking about the marathon thing because a guy who works with BowlderGal did one in around 3:40, and he thinks I'm a good runner! Actually, I was thinking about doing this same one back in 2001 until I sprained my ankle. The timing of it is pretty good, since BowlderSon's baseball will get started in February (!), and it looks like I'll be the manager this year, so it would be tough to find the time to train for a spring or summer marathon. The weather is usually good in Sacramento in December - cool (45-50) and dry (although 2 out of 3 years in one stretch they had record rainfall). So, well, I have a long way to go to decide. I would start off by racking up some 30-40 mile weeks, so if I can't do that, I just won't do the marathon and work on other stuff.

Keep up the good work!

Trying to run every other day, with cycling on the other days, and a day or two a week that I rest (usually dictated more by schedule than by physical need.)

Opted for extra sleep this morning due to the night race. Something just feels wrong about my day when I don't start it out running. Shanedog also thinks something's wrong. I felt bad for him, he gets so excited when I finish my breakfast cause he knows we're going. When I don't put on my running clothes, he's confused. Poor doggy!

After doing this morning's 10-miler in about 75 minutes, I'm thinking even more seriously about the marathon. So I think when I get back from vacation - maybe even the day after - I'll jump right in with a 10-miler, then increase that each week by a mile or two. I'm thinking I may not fret over the weekly mileage too much and just focus on ramping up the long run of the week. Long way to go before committing to do it....

wow, everybody running so much theres no time to post?

Anyway, I just had to share this. I reached a milestone today. I finally hit the three mile mark in a workout. No stopping to walk and catch my breath. This is a big deal for me! I just quit smoking on June 1 (I've had a couple of relaspses, but no more!). I set a goal for myself to start running and enter and complete a 5k by the end of August. The race is next Saturday, the 28th and today is the first time I've been able to run the 5k distance (roughly at least) without feeling like my lungs were gonna explode. So I feel like I've really accomplished something here.

Ok, I'll stop now my arm is starting to hurt being all twisted around patting my back. LOL
