i went to the gym today, yay me...last week i was a total slacker. and now i'm sooooo hungry! it didn't help that someone here at work ATE half my cheese in the fridge that i brought for cheese and crackers. who does that?? LOL! i felt like sending an email to everyone saying "which one of you bastards ate my cheese??" too weird.

The farthest I have run on a treadmill was 6 miles. And that was only because it was REALLY pouring rain. I kept saying to my family, "I ran 6 miles today. ON A TREADMILL". I couldn't believe I made it that long indoors.

Lyra, I can see you doing the "it's your birthday" body movements and I crack up! And funny funny funny that all you got from Fritz was "HUH"?

Don't do it lyra; they'll send you to anger management training!

Yeah, I can see myself on a treadmill muttering, "All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy, All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy, All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy, All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy...."

Speaking of running, er, I mean jogging, I actually passed people during the jog phase of my workout today - shocking! Hip feeling good, but still limited to 2 10-minute jogging segments separated by 8 minutes of walking. The XC skiing didn't seem to hurt at all.

This is so great, Fritz! You did all that training and this race in spite of the very cold temps we've been having. Really fantastic.

Lee, regarding 12 miles on the treadmill. I watched TV. I watched a documentary about people who lived through robberies and skyjackings and another hour of something I cant recall...It does suck but I cant run outside in the winter cause I watch my daughter (sass works afternoon shift). I run when she(the kiddo)to bed about 8pm. Except mondays I do a 4 mile speed workout before going to class. My pace varies quite a bit. On long runs or regular runs i plod along at a 10min pace. Its slow but I am trying to log lots of time (working on my endurance while indoors) but once a week I do speed training (its actually called FARTLEK which is swedish for speed play..bring on the jokes).Essentially I run at a 10min pace for 1/4 mile then run at a 8 1/2 min pace for 1/2 mile then slow down for a quarter then run the fast again for a mile then slowing then speeding up etc...it forces your body to learn to recover while running. It works awesome. I also am adding one day of "hillwork" per week on my hamster wheel.Just for variety and conditioning. The only benefit of treadmill running on long days is the mental training cause you really gots to get creative to stay motivated...My road runs are in the mid 7min to low 8min pace depending on distance.

Balloonman, check out www.hfpracing.com. Look up their "multisport" section on their site. They have a great series of races yearly. I do these as they allow solo competitors. Lemme know when you want to race,I think minors can race as long as they got a signatures from their guardian.

Birch --

When my wife was teaching at night, before I joined a lunchtime gym, I used to Nordic Trak at ngiht after putting my son to bed.

I was always worried that the clanking of the skis was gonna wake him up.

I was doing it one winter during the winter Olympics . . . .that got my adrelinline pumping.

The Nordic trak used to put too much pressure on my lower back though . . anything over 1/2 hour would cripple me. No mattre how straight I stood, and how little pressure I put on the support pad . . .it still got me.

Lee, Birch sounds like a freakin' Clydesdale on the treadmill, but he's been doing it for sooo long that she doesn't even notice the sound.

I once had to spend SIX HOURS on that thing, in training for the 3 day walk. I think it was eighteen miles or something. When you finally get off, it feels like you're walking on clouds.

It's about time to start spring training again. I'm waiting for the ice to get off the streets to start back to running. I've run five miles every year on my birthday since the year I turned thirty. This June 8th will be the 20th year in a row (49 years old next June 8th).

What's going on everyone? I just got home from a soggy, dirty run with my dog. We had a little snow and VDOT dumped 42 billions tons of sand/dirt just on our cul de sac alone! The roads are really gritty. Now I am going to take a shower and go to Target.

Sounds like a fun run RG, I just love the slop of suburban winter LOL!

I went out for my long run this morn. I was gonna out with the ad. race club I belong to but after realizing they were running a "low key 50k" I said %$#^$#@$ no and went solo to a place I love.

I started on the wrong trail (i forgot which one was longer) by the time I was back to the start I had and extra 3/4 mile in. I ran the 9.2 mile route next. It was awesome!! We got about 4" last night and it was all fluffy powder. No tracks but mine and the animals. The only down side is that I had to run slower than I thought. The 10 total miles took an arduous 1hr 49minutes to finsh and my knees took a beating but feel fine now. The neatest part was the fog when I started, it was sooo thick that in the open fields the snow and fog were indestinguishable..

Just got done running my 3.7 mile "Hills of Death" route. It was 37 degrees out, which actually felt really balmy since it's been the warmest day in a while.

I love this route, the first 1.5 miles are relatively flat, then you go down a pretty good sized downhill for about a quarter of a mile, then for the rest it's a series of up and down hills, capped off by a very tall and gnarly, super steep hill at the end. It's awesome!

Glad to hear y'all are running!

I did my longest run in 5 years today....ten miles...and now I am a hurtin' pup!

Worried a little bit about my left knee, getting some pain under the patella....started a few weeks ago, don't feel it while running, but it has to be the running that is doing it.
Fritz

Hopefully it'll be one of those pains that just goes away Fritz. What surface do you run on? Black asphalt is apparently much softer than white concrete, so it should be easier on your knees if you can run along side of the road and not on the sidewalk, if that's the case. Just a thought.

Good deal on the 10 miler Fritz! It sure is a great feeling complete something so intimidating. Sorry to here about the knee pain. I second the recommendations on insoles,or even new shoes if they are used. Do they have lots of miles on em?

Artex, you hill run sounds fun.I spend most of my miles on the treadmill so hill training is boring. But outside in the woods...hills are great. My legs feel every hill they ran yesterday.Today is a nice day off...

Had a nice walk/jog yesterday afternoon over to the former city dump, now called Mr. Trashmore. It's fenced in, but is covered with nice green (wild) grass and other little bushes. From the path, you can often see some of the jackrabbits that have taken up residence there. I saw two yesterday, and they were BIG! One of them saw me and stood up on his hind legs to get a better sniff and listen. I'm sure he was at least as tall as my waist. Beautiful day here yesterday for running - about 60 or so and clear clear clear!

I hesitate to even post on this thread because what I do certainly can't be classified as running and even calling it jogging is a stretch. However, here's my current work-out schedule - Three mornings of laps in the pool, 45-60 minutes, three mornings of upper body weights and an afternoon walk/jog everyday, weather permitting. These walks/jogs are normally 5 miles. On the days I don't swim I do a hour of cardio on various pieces of equipment to break up the routine.
