You will be amazed how quickly the progress will come. An double kudos on quitin smokin! I quit 18 months ago and feel like I got new lungs.” 8:46:40 PM 8/21/04 “congrats roam. Man, you're going to TC, you won't be able to do the Fall Ballbuster.” 9:11:00 PM 8/21/04 “I know - there are so many things going on that same weekend, that its gonna be hard to choose.” 7:36:45 PM 8/22/04 “sixers! sixers! sixers!” 7:37:58 PM 8/22/04 “First 5k race next weekend! Right down the street from my place too. Feelin better about the realisticness of it now that I've finnaly been able to actually run the distance. I havn't really been too worried about my time, but today i completed in under 30 minutes, that was kinda my personal goal. The race will be fun.” 7:38:34 PM 8/22/04 “Way to go, Roam! My next 5K is on Sept. 11th. I haven't run in the past couple of weeks, so I really need to get back into it. I'm honestly not too excited about doing it, but the money is already spent and I feel that I should give it a go. Very unlikely that I'll beat my previous time.” 9:34:52 AM 8/23/04 “I haven't ran in a month. I doubt I can even run a mile right now. The race I want to do is the Oktoberfest 5K Beer Run/Walk. Main reason I want to do this one is the cool beer mug you get for racing and the free beer afterwards. I have time to get myself back in shape before Oct.” 9:40:12 AM 8/23/04 “Now that sounds like a fun race Ewker!” 10:13:37 AM 8/23/04 “No kidding! I don't know of any races around here that gives out beer mugs. Great idea!” 8:40:07 PM 8/23/04 “Roam - good job, on the running and the quitting smoking, especially the quitting smoking, I quit like 20 yrs ago and can honestly say I don't miss it one bit! Ewker - sounds like a cool race, I KNOW I could run 5K if there was a beer mug waitng for me...lol” 10:25:14 PM 8/23/04 “I started running a hill program at the gym (much bigger hills on the treadmill than there are in my area). Seems to have kicked things up a notch. The grades get up to 8.5% incline. When I get back to the flatter inclines I find myself able to speed up quite a bit. Have a Dr's appt Thursday for some pretty serious foot pain I've been having for awhile. I have a dreadful feeling I'm going to end up with a toe re-broken and some time off.” 10:33:29 PM 8/23/04 “ewker the beer run you mentioned reminds me of mile #20 at the detroit marathon. There is a giant party there every year and the folks at the party pass out beer and smokes to the runners.” 5:36:07 AM 8/24/04 “LOL Thats just mean!” 5:50:21 AM 8/24/04 “Dang Sass! 8.5% is pretty dadgum steep! Hope your foot's ok! Maybe its just a stress injury or something simple.” 5:51:14 AM 8/24/04 “Thank you Roam. I kicked a door jamb a few monthes ago and crunched my tiny toe pretty good. I didn't do anything about it because there's not enough of it to get tape around and I'd broken it before. Now it's healed all wrong, half of my foot is painful and I'm not sure what the heck is happening. Maybe I did get another fracture or something.” 7:56:18 AM 8/24/04 “Sass what happened, did one of the Birch's get out of the way to quick and you hit the door jamb” 8:02:16 AM 8/24/04 “I've been working on adding my long runs back into my training. Did a 9 miler today and it was gravy, about 85.5 minutes. It was on the treadmill so it was a bit boring.” 9:04:14 PM 8/25/04 “Hi birch. You need a new Eco challenge series for those long treadmill runs. :-D Or watch track and field Olympics. That'll inspire you. Good deal on getting the longer runs in.” 9:06:32 PM 8/25/04 “I look forward to new tapes. I have been using the gyms treadmill to save wear on mine, Plus I know that this winter will be looooooong and cold so I will be stuck at home enough.” 9:10:43 PM 8/25/04 Good Luck Sass!!! “Hope the pinky toe checks out ok!” 7:39:24 AM 8/26/04 “I'm bailing on my next 5K run. I need to find another form of exercise I enjoy.” 7:53:05 AM 8/26/04 “Thank you Dhutch! Sg, Sometimes it takes awhile to become enjoyable. =)” 8:16:49 AM 8/26/04 “I'm actually enjoying my runs - still building up to something respectable, but I just started this "hobby" a couple of months ago - for the first time ever in my whole life.” 8:49:43 AM 8/26/04 “I thought I would get into it, but after "training" for a few months for my first 5K. How much longer is it supposed to take??? BTW, Sass, give me a call at work when you have a chance.” 9:19:48 AM 8/26/04 “No biggie smiley girl, everybody has diff stuff that makes them tick. You tried, you didn't like it too much, Cool! Try bikeing or something else.” 9:38:27 AM 8/26/04 “so my first race tomorrow, 5k. Should be a fairly "relaxed" event - being advertised as a "run/walk" put on by the local running club. Do most of yall take a rest day the day before a race or other event? or do you do a "light" workout? just curious.” 11:15:06 AM 8/27/04 “RA - I like a light workout. Best of luck. Have fun out there. Sass - how's that pinky toe?” 11:29:51 AM 8/27/04 “I would jog about 20 minutes and do a few strides and stretches.” 11:32:38 AM 8/27/04 “8 miles after work yesterday. It was warm and frickin humid. Hottest run of the year. One of those where every stitch of clothing is wet when you are done.” 11:46:40 AM 8/27/04 “I had a "hair dripper" this morning too. 8-]” 12:01:38 PM 8/27/04 “i have that every day when I work out dhutch. I live in perpetual 85 or 90% humidity.” 5:04:31 PM 8/27/04 “thanks for the advice hutch, aero.” 5:05:08 PM 8/27/04 Thanks you guys “for the advice on getting rid of side aches/stitches. Seems to have worked for me.” 5:14:17 PM 8/27/04 “did a 6 mile hill run on the hamster wheel tonite, I am smoked. 0-6% grade for up to one mile 6-6.7mph. Burned 350 more calories then my typical 6 miler.UGH” 8:11:14 PM 8/27/04 Results! “Well, I feel pretty good about this. I came in 3rd in my age group - 35 - 39 with a time of 29:45 and 52nd overall out of 98 or 99 entrants. The winning time was 16:30 - WOW! It was fun and it was really cool to pass people! lol” 8:17:27 AM 8/28/04 “Awesome Roam! Good job!! =D Dhutch, the foot is getting better. Thanks for asking.” 8:28:42 AM 8/28/04 “Good job Roam! Passing people is great. Nothing like having just enough left in the tank to pick a few off near the end of the race.” 10:35:55 AM 8/28/04 “A repeat of my post on the other thread: Congrats! Racing is addicting, isn't it? I haven't been on this thread in a while and have a lot of catching up to. After more or less taking a hiatus from running because of Florida heat and taking care of the move to Maine, I'm on track to beginning my regiment again. It's now easier for me to supplement hiking with running, and I've been doing more of the former than the latter lately, but that'll change once the school year starts. I did a 5 mile run with no problems whatsoever the other day. Didn't feel the least bit winded or tired, and could was tempted to do more. I'm aiming to run at least 3 times a week once school starts, a minimum of five miles each run. If I don't go backpacking on the weekends for whatever reason, I'll do a longer run instead (10+ miles). Snowy weather is only a few months away, then it'll be cross country skiing instead of running when conditions permit (which is usually quite often, I'm guessing). Yeah, life is good!” 10:42:16 AM 8/28/04 thoughts on using trail runners on the road “A few months ago I bought my first pair of trail running shoes, New Balance 806's. They are very comfortable and work out great on the trails I run on. They were so comfortable that I decided to not replace my worn road runners and use the trail runners on the road as well. A few weeks ago I started getting some minor aches on my left achilles during road runs. I figured the reason was that I was doing less road running and more trail running, so I didn't think much about it. However, this past tuesday, I did a 1 hour road run after work and limped home in pain. Hmmmmmm, am I getting old and perhaps I shouldn't run on the road anymore? Even though I prefer trail running, I don't like that option. I can come home from work and get a great workout including hills, and be finished by 5 o'clock. I like that when I have other things to do and can't get out to a trail. Or perhaps it's the trail runners? Maybe there isn't enough cushioning in them for pounding on the roads. I decided to rest the leg a few days and think of what to do. I even gave up a chance to hike with some TT'ers today in Pa. I HATED making that decision. The leg was still a bit sore today but I decided to hit the mall and buy some new road runners. I got cushiony Nikes and hit the road this afternoon. I was apprehensive with the leg being a bit sore at the beginning, but after a 45 minute run, I felt great. In fact, there is no pain at all right now. Woohoo, I'm a happy camper. So the moral of this story (FOR ME) is to keep the trail runners on the trail and the road runners on the road. Of course, your mileage may vary. Hey Artex - Dessert Island Marathon 2005 perhaps?” 5:27:54 PM 8/28/04 “yeah, i'd say the road pounding was overpowering the shoes. Good move Penns.” 5:30:23 PM 8/28/04 “Pennsy, good move with the shoes, and glad you found out what you did. And I think you mean Desert Island? That looks great, but I don't think I could be ready in time. Looks like a very tempting option for the future though, and something to shoot for.” 6:10:51 PM 8/28/04 “Dessert Marathon? Is that like a Pub Crawl where you stop at every mile and have a different dessert... Mile 1 - chocolate parfait, Mile 2 - bananas and whipped cream, Mile 3 - pumpkin custard pie, Mile 4 - Cherry Cheesecake!!!! Hey Roam, how many people did you race against in your age range, 3? HAH HAH!!! - j/k dude! Congratulations!!!” 6:16:44 PM 8/28/04 “Well, excuse me mister fancy pants. I didn't know the spelling police would be out in force today. Sheesh, you haven't gave your first school lesson yet and you're at it. LOL! Won't be ready? Geez, isn't it in October of 2005? How much time do ya need? ;o) Ha Ha Chef Bobo - for that marathon, you need to train on the Nordic Snack 2000, where you can gain up to 5000 calories per hour.” 6:40:56 PM 8/28/04 “My bad, I missed that you had originally said 2005, and was thinking of this year's race. Yes, 2005 sounds fantastic. Count me in.” 6:45:32 PM 8/28/04 “I vowed never to do another marathon, but I'll be at a "special" age next year, so it's kind of intriguing. Plus, it's in Maine, dammit! btw - what are you doing posting? Did you finally get a net connection at home?” 6:49:44 PM 8/28/04 “No, I'm at the school. I didn't come in on Friday (went hiking up Mt. Morse and hung out at the beach) so I'm taking care of some odds at ends at the school. Well, that and I have cable TV in my classroom and I'm watching the Red Sox.” 6:51:37 PM 8/28/04 BTW “I'll finally have internet and cable TV at my place this Wednesday. :-)” 6:53:00 PM 8/28/04 bastage! “it's bad enough that I'm home on a Saturday for like the third time this year, you gotta rub it in, don't ya? ;o) to keep this on topic - I'm going running tomorrow morning. ps... are we winning?” 6:56:52 PM 8/28/04 0-0, third inning “Damon made a great throw from center field in the first, and Pedro is on the mound and looking good. Keeping back on topic myself, there's a 5K here in my town on September 12th that I'm planning on running. It'll be my first race since April.” 7:00:37 PM 8/28/04 “Kewl, good luck! Hey, I forgot that a local sports bar shows all the Sox games. I'm outta here!” 7:07:24 PM 8/28/04 Jump to Page << prev
