Thanks. I'm looking forward to the race, and proceeds go to benefit the local YMCA. That'll be a hoot if (or should I say, when) we do the Desert Island marathon.

Enjoy the game! Go BoSox!

Great job roam! any time you think about quitting remember this run.

Pennsy, I was at the local running store today (staffed by real runners LOL) and we talked about trail runners. He conmmented that trail runners have less padding since they are intended for softer trail use, your experience bears this out. I am switching back to regular runners from now on...

OK, this is kinda funny
just checked the "official results" and turns out there were only three men in my age group. LOL, so - my 3rd place finish isn't really all that impressive.

LOL - still sounds good though!

I'm tickled - I made my goal regardless!

Trail Runners: New Balance 905(or whatever number they are up to 906 maybe)have more cushion with all the other stability features

New running shoes are gifts.
At the same running store Birch was at I got fitted for running shoes. Had to take off my shoes and walk barefoot while the dude watched me. He suggested a certain type of shoe (not brand) and brought out five pairs for me to try on. HOLY COW, what a difference! I hope it stops raining long enough for me to give them a try tonight. They feel like little clouds of love on my poor, sorry feet. The dude also showed me what to look for in a running shoe. I never noticed the differences. Or, perhaps I should say I never realized the differences were more than visual features, they actually make a difference in stability and fit. I spent alot more for my shoes at this store than I would have other places but I think they (and my new knowledge) are going to be worth every penny.

hmmm, and I kinda figured those "fittings" were just a gimmick to get you into the store and buy overpriced shoes.

Roam, generally I think the employees at a real running store want to get you into a good shoe that will work best for you. That is their best chance to secure repeat business.

They will want you to walk around so they can see how much you do or do not pronate. If you have been running for a while, it is a good idea to bring your old running shoes with you to the store. They will look at them and analyze the wear pattern. They do this so they can get you a shoe that will give you the best chance to prevent injury. Also, I really don't think the shoes at a running store are much more expensive than similar shoes at the mega sport mart places.

If you go to runnersworld.com (I think thats the address), the have lots of information about how you walk/run and where you run to help you get the right shoes.

They help you with concerns like volume, direction of protonation-even, in or out--weight( your weight), running surface that helps you find the best shoe for you.

I've found it very helpful.

We all walk/built differently so the support of the shoe has to be different for each person.

So I don't think the sales people in the running store were trying to sell higher priced shoes they were just trying to get a good fit (of course they want your return business, so they will do you right.)

Birch and Sass - you're fortunate to have a running store with "working runners" who actually care that their customers walk out with the proper shoes. That is rare these days, at least around here.
Also, thanks for confirming what I suspected about the trail runners. That's good to know, especially since my suspicions are often wrong. ;o)

I guess I should clarify, the shoes weren't priced higher than normal, I just generally buy everything on sale. These were regular price.

Got to do 7.5 miles in them last night in a fine light mist (Oh, pure heaven!) with my favorite guy and two stupid dogs. What a great run! I've been taking it easier than usual for the past two weeks because of my messed up foot. I think the break did me a world of good. I had my fastest time yet for 7.5 (which is still slllloooooow, lol), even with my dinner in my throat. The run felt fantastic. Good times!

And hey, I could really feel the difference in the shoes. Parts of my feet that never take any beating where hitting the ground harder than usual, not painful or anything, just different.

Roam, congrats on the race.

I have a pair of trail runners that I run in. I usually run indoors on a cushioned track. I have run some of the trail with no problems but when I do roads I can tell a big difference. I prefer to run indoors now. Seems the knees can't take the pounding anymore. Old age I guess. Maybe that is why I like riding my bike more now.

Hey!

I have a question for you guys. I need advice on how to train to lower my 5k time. What types of stuff should I be doing? Longer distance? Run for longer time and ignore distance? Hmmmm?

Tempo Runs

On some of your runs start to interject portions in which you go faster than your normal pace. I do something informal like pick a landmark up front or say, the next intersection. I pick up the pace until I get there and then drop down to my normal speed. You don't have to sprint (although sprint intervals are awesome) just pick it up until you are going the pace you want to run for your next race.

I pretend that I'm chasing down an opponent. Shanedoggy pretends he is chasing a cat or squirrel. He looooves tempo runs.

Run faster
Really, that is how you are going to need to train. Fartleks, interval runs, speedwork in general. I would recommend against initiating this until you feel you have a good conditioning base though. Running too fast too soon is one of the easiest ways to hurt yourself.

Another comment on speed workouts
For the same reason most non-runners don't like running, many runners do not like speed work.

It's hard. You know, the "feels like your heart is going to explode" hard.

just found out about a running clinic every wed night at the local "fleet feet" shoe store, put on by the Sailfish Striders running club.

Should be cool based on the phone convo i just had with the store owner.

Usually have some type of speaker, a doc or something like that, followed by a three to five mile run. The store provides snacks and drinks after.

Dhutch1 - Sounds like you're talking about "interval training"? I've never done it, but my father (who is an ultrathon runner, and, like aero, has run all of his life) says it's a great way to increase overall speed, and will get you into "running shape" quick, if you feel you're out of it. Such is the case with me, and I'm considering giving it a try.

A good way to start off (again, according to my Pops), is to do it on a track. Do four laps, one mile total. First lap, jog at your normal pace. Second lap, book it as fast as you can. Third lap, jog. Fourth lap, book it. One can tack on laps as it gets easier.

I may do the above this week, I'll post to let you guys know how it goes, if you're interested.

Hi y'all!

Well, I didn't run one solitary step while on vacation. At least I got workouts in, though, as we were pretty much on the go from 8 in the morning 'till 10 at night every day. I think one day we must've walked 8 or 10 miles.

I started my "marathon training program" yesterday, so in about a month I'll decide if I'm actually going to run it. Good news on the scale this AM: I didn't seem to have gained any weight - woo hoo!

Ugh! I hopped on my hamster wheel tonite for a mellow 10 miler and wouldnt you know it. A rhythmic thumping. I decided it was time to check it out. I pulled the front housing off and listened again, thump thump thump. I took the belt off and still thump thump thump. I took the motor out of its cradle, thump thump thump. Bad motor bearing without a doubt. I check the parts cost online, $466 plus shipping,UGH! I look at my warranty and wouldnt ya know it, I have coverage till december so it oughtta be free. I will call tomorrow and find out for sure. I have replaced the deck already and they seny a spare belt too (a $300 part) so I should be good for a while.

Bowlderman - You're an animal for running in 90 degree heat. I never could readjust to that last year when I was living in Florida. The Olympics ended right when I got my cable hooked up, so can't help you out there.

Birch - Wow, good deal it started clonking while still within warranty. I bet they don't count on folks using them as much as you do. :-) Best of luck.

Actually, it was. The only time we get this kind of heat is with the wind blowing toward the ocean instead of from it. Thus, very low humidity, so it's not too bad....

I took nearly two weeks off from running for vacation and a handful of other things.

I got home this past weekend, and ran 3.5 w/ my dad on Labor Day. It felt like twenty. The next day, I ran five and it, too, felt like twenty. Today I had planned to run five, but ended up running just over six. And, well... it felt like 6. So, PHEW. Glad it only took a couple runs to get back in the swing of things.

Humidity is slowly, but surely, dropping in my area. Yeah!
