Great weather. 35 no wind, sun. Legs felt like freakin blocks of cement. Thud thud thud thud thud. 1 out of 100 runs my legs feel like machines and buzz along with my torso wondeing what they heck is going on. 70 out of 100 runs everything just sort of rolls along with the usual bright spots, huffing and puffing, clicking, grinding etc. but . . .20 out of 100 runs, my legs feel like column of cement . . like my torso has to drag them along.” 8:17:42 AM 2/04/03 “40 minutes of upper body work, 30 minutes on an elliptical cross-trainer and 45 minutes of shoveling snow. Coffee time!” 10:29:35 AM 2/04/03 “Jeez, Geezr, you tryin' to become Charles Atlas or something?” 10:36:59 AM 2/04/03 “Martyb, well, I didn't want to shovel the snow but your mom never showed. Actually, I didn't feel like doing anything, but Weezr wanted to go so I tagged along. Yesterday's swim plugged up my head so bad that I suffered most of the night. Not sure what to try. I've never tried the clip (not sure of their actual name) for plugging the nose but may be forced to give it a whirl. I like swimming because it's a good all around work-out but sometimes wonder if the misery after is worth it.” 10:56:25 AM 2/04/03 “You could probably get another 45 min. doing my driveway, Geezr. It's cheaper than a health club membership!” 11:01:32 AM 2/04/03 “I'm eating ice cream and reading about other people running.” 11:20:21 AM 2/04/03 “what kind of ice cream?” 11:22:45 AM 2/04/03 “Chocolate cake here. Geezr, the nose pincher works well, although it is a bit uncomfortable. You swim for 45 minutes and suck water the whole time? Try coming up for air more often, lol. The moldable ear plugs rock too. I had cronic swimmer's ear for about ten years, they helped alot.” 11:27:00 AM 2/04/03 “Sassy, are you talking about the same moldable ear plugs that a shooter would use? Will try the nose pincher. Coming up for air . . . you mean I'm supposed to breathe?” 1:01:46 PM 2/04/03 “Chocolate cake? Awwwww man, what'd you have to go and mention that for? artex wipes string of drool hanging from mouth” 1:08:32 PM 2/04/03 “Sassafras, used a nose pincher while swimming laps this morning. As you mentioned, a bit uncomfortable, but I do feel better. Thanks!” 10:48:29 AM 2/12/03 “You can take it off now, Geezr.” 10:49:11 AM 2/12/03 “Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh, that's better. Thanks Martyb.” 10:53:42 AM 2/12/03 “You might want to leave it on while you're reading TT, though!” 10:54:12 AM 2/12/03 “You're welcome. I doticed you were talkid kida fuddy.” 10:54:37 AM 2/12/03 “Well, leave it on! My running stunk this past week! it was icy, windy and cold and I didn't get in the miles I wanted. Also, my hamstring is sore from running on the ice. Blecchhh! My first race of the year will be this weekend. It's a couples relay with each running 3 miles. It's in a town about 120 miles east of here and I think they still have lots of snow, so it won't be too fast. But, it's only february...” 11:01:00 AM 2/12/03 “Aero, sooooooo that's what I smelled. Thought it was the sugar factory. ;-) Good luck this weekend. Fill us in on the results.” 11:04:17 AM 2/12/03 “Isn't your lovely wife still on IR? Who's going to be your partner? I nominate Geezr. I upped my "jog" time to 11:00 per jog, and reduced the walk time between jogs to 6:00. I also happened to run along a marked mile yesterday, so clicked the watch. Found out I was going at 8:00 pace, just by accident. 22:00 at 8:00 pace is a long way from "the old days," but I guess it's progress. Hopefully my conditioning will be OK on our assault on Mt. Rose this weekend. Weather looks like it could get dicey though, so we may have to abort the mission....” 11:11:02 AM 2/12/03 “Since my wife is still confined to the bike for awhile, she graciously allowed one of her friends to run with me! At least we're both over 40 so we can stay in the masters category! Those early season races hurt and I wish it was a little longer distance so I could ease into it a little more.” 11:19:44 AM 2/12/03 “Martyb, is this weekend your x-country ski trip to Yosemite? Aero, can correct me, but I believe his wife was "Athlete Of The Year" for Montana's Big Sky Games in 2002. Do I have that right Aero?” 11:20:28 AM 2/12/03 “Geezr, the Yosemite trip is still unscheduled, but will probably be about mid-March. This weekend is a trip near Lake Tahoe to attempt to scale Mt. Rose (10,776'). We plan to camp at about 9,000'. It's only a few miles into where we would camp and just a couple more to the summit, so should be a fun trip if the weather cooperates (not looking all that good right now). My pals have planned it so we will arrive at the campsite around noonish so they can try out some snow lodge building. I plan to futz with my new tent....” 11:40:10 AM 2/12/03 “Skipped the gym today in favor of snowshoeing thru 18" of powder for six hours. I hurt all over and tomorrow's workout will feel like a vacation.” 4:56:20 PM 2/18/03 “Show-off!” 5:13:25 PM 2/18/03 “Braggart! just kidding. i ran for an hour on the treadmill today. we have lots of ice and slush. however, i know that spring is just around the corner. running gal” 5:44:57 PM 2/18/03 “I don't feel like a show-off, or braggart. Can someone swing by about 9:00 P.M. and help me from my recliner to the bedroom.” 5:52:44 PM 2/18/03 “I've decided to take up running...starting tomorrow. I don't think I'll start out very fast or far since I have never been a runner before.” 5:54:07 PM 2/18/03 “Free23, there actually are runners that post here. I'm not one of them. I do walk daily and interrupt that walk with what I like to call a jog, but even that's a stretch. Still, the true runners put up with us wannabes and I think you'll get some good advice, as well as a laugh or two from this thread. Good luck.” 6:34:52 PM 2/18/03 “Took most of last week off. I am/was fighting some cursed sinus infection for the fourth time since october. I also think I may have been pushing a bit hard on my mileage. I made it out yesterday with the dogs for a nice 6 miler in some fresh snow. We LOVED it! I am a bit sore from the slippage in the frozen spots but it was nice to get off the hamster wheel, which is where I had to run today...” 9:02:35 PM 2/18/03 “Your best bet is to use aero's training method: run about 20 miles a day really really fast.” 9:54:55 PM 2/18/03 “Just kidding! You knew that, right?” 9:55:18 PM 2/18/03 “:S >.< I am just hoping I can make it one mile...” 10:16:03 PM 2/18/03 “Welcome Free23. Keep us posted on your progress. Geezr, some days I feel like a "true" runner. Some days I am just a wannabe.” 8:21:40 AM 2/19/03 Race report “I ran my first race of the season last weekend. It was a couples relay, 5K each. It was in Colstrip, MT, a little town out in the middle of the prairie with not much more than a strip mine and a huge power plant. Anyway, we won overall and Masters. I ran about 17:30, kind of slow, but it was cold, windy and slushy. My partner, "The other woman" (not my wife, who is recovering from knee surgery) ran about 21:00 and we broke their masters record. It was good to blow out some carbon and get ready for the spring races.” 8:31:43 AM 2/19/03 “I just hate it when somebody runs about 7 seconds slower than my 5k PR (which I ran at age 26), and calls it "kind of slow." Congrats, aero!!!! BTW, was this partnering some kind of trick to get a (jealous) Mrs. aero to recover faster? Forgot to ask, Geezr, where the heck did you find 18" of powder?” 10:11:03 AM 2/19/03 “It was actually called the "Sweetheart Run". I ran it with one of my wife's friends since she's still on the mend. I really did suck air, Marty. I haven't done any kind of speedwork for a long time since I got over my ankle surgery. The next one will be around St. Patrick's Day where I can do a 10K. Those 5Ks hurt! I bet geezr got into the powder up at Red Lodge. I was up Monday downhill skiing and there's plenty of snow up there. I ran into Chief, too!(figuratively!)” 10:21:23 AM 2/19/03 “you won?? congratulations, Aero! :-)” 10:22:48 AM 2/19/03 “We won these nice pottery mugs, too! i think they hold about a quart of coffee!” 10:26:58 AM 2/19/03 “just what everyone needs! at least a quart of coffee per day. ;-)” 10:33:36 AM 2/19/03 “One of my prized possessions is my "Christmas Relays" mug, which I received back in the 80's at the race by the same name. It has been held now for about 30+ years, and usually has a few Olympians and other hot shots - really a very competitive race. I had showed up without a team, hoping to join up with somebody who needed an extra body. I found a buddy who was in superb condition at the time - had run in the neighborhood of 4:20 in the mile a few months earlier. Then we found 2 other guys who were looking for a team, so we were set. One of the guys had just missed the Oly qualifier in the marathon 3 months earlier and the other guy was a star college runner who was getting back into competition. Our first guy averaged about 4:30/mile for the 4.6 mile loop, putting us in third place. The second and third guys were both about 4:40/mile, and we dropped down to about 5th when I got the imaginary baton. My top speed was about 6:15/mile at the time for that distance, so I got passed right and left the whole loop. Somehow I managed to hang onto the last place that they awarded a mug!” 10:40:33 AM 2/19/03 “Iknowlyra!I'vehadabout threecupssofarthismorning, butithasn'taffectedmeabit!” 10:43:35 AM 2/19/03 “Its so sad :( I went out to run in the rain too (does that earn me some points?) I couldn't even run a mile. Sheesh I must be really out of shape- i bike, swim, hike but when it comes to running...ugh. Oh well. if I keep it up hopefully I will get better! :)” 10:58:37 AM 2/19/03 “LMAO, Aero!!! The younger girls slept all the way home on Monday. To say the least, they were beat. Sami went back out with her friends and boarded until 4:00. Yes, her mother called her work and told her she wouldn't make it back int time to geo to work. I stayed in and another beer with Pat. We'll be back on Saturday, iffin you're interested. We can stay away from Pat and Tom!!!” 10:58:57 AM 2/19/03 “Free, YES, running in bad weather definitely gets you extra points! When I'm in competitive mode, I love running in bad weather - the worse it is, the better - because I just imagine all the slobs sitting home watching TV that I'm going to beat at the next race! Hang in there, start from the beginning and just increase time and distance gradually.” 11:09:49 AM 2/19/03 Wow, with a capital W “Congrats Aero!!!!!!!!! You should get a medal just for going to Colstrip, as well as winning the race. Martyb, Aero is correct. I headed to Red Lodge yesterday. Parked the truck at Parkside Campground and snowshoed around Greenough Lake, etc. From there I climbed Trail No. 8 (Sheep Creek)part way up to Silver Run Plateau. Lots of powder in the wooded areas and some crusty spots in areas with a southern exposure while climbing toward the plateau. The weather was sunny and upper 30s. Saw a nice cow moose and several deer. Unfortunatley, by legs haven't worked right since I arrived home.” 12:34:13 PM 2/19/03 “Photos?” 1:04:10 PM 2/19/03 “Man, that hurts Aero. That's a few seconds faster than my PR when I was in the shape of my life. Congrats on setting the record though. Sounds like you had fun.” 2:13:30 PM 2/19/03 “Aero, excellent job at your " a little slow" pace. I can go that fast if I fall off of a cliff...maybe.” 5:17:27 PM 2/19/03 “Wanna see some real runners?! Aero, you especially may want to show this to your charges to inspire them! Mens XC Nationals Womens XC Nationals” 11:33:53 AM 2/20/03 Oh Well “I spent yesterday getting the bike ready for the commute to work beginning tomorrow. The ice and snow has melted from the roads and temperatures are bearable. Unfortunately that's all about to change. Single digit lows by Sunday and highs only in the teens. Looks like it's back to the gym. D@mn.” 11:52:58 AM 2/20/03 Jump to Page << prev
